What I do is pick out different colours for different parts. Then do the lineart, put the real colours in etc.

What I mean is like in photos, but I don't think I have the right terms nor knowledge to explain that :(. I believe there was a Weekly Challenge on that, and was looking for the winner's piece (can't remember by whom it's by nor its author, only that it was a cute little monkey), but I couldn't find it. Field of range I think it was called.
What he could do is have that effect and work on it in order to focus the piece on an element, for example the eyes, and everything around it slowly loses detail. That's what I mean.
Hope it's an interesting idea.

I think you should work with focus/out of focus, plus what was already said by Helm.

The crits, techniques, etc given here should help you. I have the impression you have the same problem as the topic creator: you rely too much on the line art. Anyway don't thank me, but the people who originally wrote those words of wisdom :)

That's another of my refs and my Steam avatar. I don't think you've played HL2 Dr. D, but the grenades are red but when primed, go white, then explode. It's fiction.
Anyway I thought that it would be more interesting if the grenade should now be the light source . Will try and post something soon.

That looks great. I've got nothing else to say apart from working on the HUD. Can't wait to play this!

Found something interesting :D
I think I'll use a similar type of texturing as Snake used for the clouds. And I've added fleshier colours. Will update soon!
Thanks for the C+C!

Second Thoughts: Actually I don't think it'll work out that way. Trying something else.
Done:

Another:

I've decided that the handgrenade should be the only lightsource, so I'm readjusting it (haven't finished)

I don't like the dithering on the head either. Do you have any other shading technique to suggest? Maybe make the colours closer and more fleshy? I'll make a few tests. Thanks!

What you could do is create a larger shadow at the bottom of the walls, as if there were lights right on top of the walls (if you see what I mean :B)

I've recently bought/played/finished Half Life 2 and HL: Episode One, and I just love Zombines .
I've tried to make one from scratch but to use refs for details:

I've got problems with the colour palette, had to adjust the contrast several times. I don't know which style to go for, maybe I should make the coulours greyer, lighten them... Plus I did four different shading techniques on the head crab :/. Should I get rid of the grainy dithering completely and go for something else? Anyway please give c+c ^^

Refs:

(this was not used for the pose, just a coincidence :o)
