Pixel Art / Some new stuff
« on: May 05, 2010, 06:05:48 am »
I didn't want to bump my old thread. Here's the stuff I've been working on lately:

I'm starting to like these, which usually means there's something wrong with them. The astronaut holding the flag is a bit of worry to me. I think the arm is fine, or maybe not?

What do you guys think?

(cnc please)

General Discussion / Style...why?
« on: May 03, 2010, 06:08:05 am »
It's all about style this post. I know helm has one style for making (sprites) pixel art, and gil has another, and the guy who did oh shoot forgot his name has another.

My question is, what made you stick with the style you prefer? Was it easy? Hard? Challenging? Would it be easy to animate? Or do you like a particular genre/game and want to pay a tribute to it?

I would like to know! What makes you draw sprites/pixel art the way you do?

(more, or less perhaps, because I do not/can't find my own, looking for a bit guidance in this point)

Pixel Art / Brown Level Mockup: LD17 junk
« on: April 18, 2010, 05:57:03 am »
I had originally intended to do a whole level mockup on one color choice. That included characters as well. I threw that idea out real quick. So, I was mind wandering the other day and thought, how would it be to do a sprite in a larger style? So I gave it a try and then I found out that it was a bit too large. So I shrunk it down, tweaked it a bit, and came up with this:

The tiles I do not like. There seems to be no depth to it. Also, the er, girl character is my first (i think) female sprite attempt. I don't like drawing, er, you know.

Anyways, any cnc would be nice.

I don't see this becoming a game either. Just a sprite study.

Thanks in advance.

(I forgot about my other threads for the tiles. I'll go back and look at those as well.)

General Discussion / Sooo, best method of apology?
« on: April 04, 2010, 05:55:50 pm »
Well, what would be the best method to apologize for my behavior over at the other thread?

I may have taken some comments out context or misunderstood what somebody said. I apologize for that.

Rule #1: Yes I was. I apologize for being so and not getting other peoples points.

I really do enjoy being a part of this community and would hate to lose contact with such an incredible group of individuals.

So, I'm willing to take any/all suggestions if necessary.

General Discussion / You Meet The Nicest People Making Videogames
« on: March 27, 2010, 05:32:10 am »
Can I do this?

http://kck.st/cRJcXC

I just thought you guys would like to know about this project.

TTFN.

(not my idea btw, just getting the word out, if only there was one for pixel artists, I'd donate to that too.)

General Discussion / Chiptune VideoCast
« on: March 14, 2010, 02:50:16 am »
Hey everyone!

I started my own videocast this week on youtube. I have only about 3 videos right now. The third is being processed actually. I don't know if you guys listen to chiiptune/video game music or not. Here's a linkie to the third one though.

Some say I'm too loud, others can't hear me. How's the voice on this?

General Discussion / Animation, I don't get it.
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:20:01 am »
Hello there!

Sorry if it's been awhile, I've been pretty okay with my stuff except for one small issue: Animation. Let's take "La Mulana's"/"Spelunky's" characters as examples here. How did they figure out how to animate something like that!?? I have something of similar style in mind, but how does one go about creating stuff like walking, jumping, etc? When I've asked for crit sometimes, people have posted to the ever so famous bobby head walk style by what's his name. Similar to the way people post about trees around here. They put a screen of "Children of Mana SNES" and tell the beginner to learn from that. It's like my dad beating us on purpose whenever we would play chess with him just starting out. (Still can't beat him.)

I guess what I'm really after, is how do you approach the way you animate something? Whether it's a wind blown tree, a space ship thrusting away, a square or slime walking around, or a fighter beating the guts out of his opponent, how do you approach it?

General Discussion / Goodbye (For Fool, if he still visits here.)
« on: February 16, 2010, 05:00:27 am »
From Pixeljoint:

In Fool's own words:

This is probably the less appropriate place for this, but i feel it is just too much for me to handle. My baby daughter haven't come back from sleep, don't know what happened yet - possible cause fatal drug combination, zoloft and some painkiller she took before go to bed. She just turn 18 a few days ago and was so happy she can buy cigarettes on her own. Now I still see her online in skype, write unspoken words and afraid to hit enter because that bad dream will become a reality - she will not reply anymore... I thought I've seen crap in life, but picking a coffin for my child top everything off. I know, I'm not first and unfortunately not the last father loosing his child, you don't know her but if you, good people, can find in your heart to say simple "Good bye Jessica" this monday at 1 pm est please do so. I don't expect everyone to post here, I do realize there is no word capable to fix this... And I dont feel up to continue with the whole art thing any longer. At least for now, when sense of being peels off from everything. Thanks everyone. This account will be abandoned for some time, I would take my time to readjust my life with half of soul left .

Our thoughts are with Fool and his family. Let's all say goodbye to Jessica at 1 PM EST today. (February 15, 2010)
http://www.pixeljoint.com/2010/02/15/3046/Goodbye_Jessica.htm

I know this is late. But goodbye dear. Even though we're complete strangers, it is hard to lose any family member. Even though I never knew you on a personal level, the one thing that we love in common (pixel art), compels a connection. So from the interests of one human being who has looked up to the other in respect. Allow me to say this:

Goodbye dear, for who knows how you may have changed the world. Or who knows what you could have become. We can only dream. But hopefully in God's care may you rest. And may your family find solice and compassion.

God's speed, farewell.

Pixel Art / The Devil's Tower, Castlevania clone**
« on: December 19, 2009, 07:10:09 am »
Hello there! Me again!

My week of work hell is over for now. So that means time for pixel art! I have been working on a little project called Devil's Tower. I have been doing bits and pieces this week, but most recently worked on the walk animation again. I would love to try some motion blur sometime, though I don't know where to get started.

Character Study Update

Environment Work

There seems to be a slight skip somewhere in the animation. Not sure what causes that.

It is still wip. Only one leg atm. Sorry bout that.

Some other works for the game:

Previous of the above:

@Jad: Is this the technique you were meaning?

Any CnC?

And if a problem is contrast, I'm still not sure how to fix it. Any help there would be welcome.

Pixel Art / Run! Run away! (first animation)
« on: November 10, 2009, 07:03:54 am »
Hello, me again. Why do I keep coming back? Oh yeah, pain is good.

So here's what I've been working on today.

It looks like he clips a bit at the end there. Reverse the frames after that? I think you mostly run with both hands on the gun in this case. I just wanted to get the hand out of the way. Or should I animate the hand to go with it? On the other hand, it's probably better to just have him hold the gun with both hands. And have it move up and down.

Any CnC please?

(it is my first running animation for a while, so I may have forgotten a few things.)
