General Discussion / Kill the Unpaid Jobs Board
« on: February 08, 2011, 04:19:15 am »
Honestly, why is there one even on the site? No one is going to work for free from here. I would say 99.9 percent of the threads have 0 replies and the ones that do are fairly rare. So, because of the unlikelihood of anyone working for free, I think that it should be removed. Unless of course it's a clever way of not cluttering up the paid jobs thread. And a simple fix would be to delete unpaid jobs outright from the thread. Since no one is going to work for free. That's just my reasoning. What do you think?

2D & 3D / Skecthes
« on: July 26, 2010, 03:39:04 pm »
So, about four weeks or so ago I started doing some drawing. I was tying to do one or so every two or three days. Then two weeks ago vacation happened and I didn't do any drawing. However, I was able to snag a video of one before I left and here it is:

I didn't think to look for a reference for this one. I can't do clothes folds for squat. I hate working on the face because I think I got it right and then I think twice or I mess it up working on something else. The leg on the left side is a bit short. I think my arm  structure is off. Oh yeah, and my hands suck. The bear on the right was done quick and just for fun. And also for a bit of shoe practice. I was going for a slight star trek feel and flopped it. I'll post the rest later.

Any CnC?

General Discussion / Sketches anyone?
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:20:40 am »
Pypebros did something rather rather intriguing on a thread.

He posted part of his sketch to sprite process. Since I'm doing some of my own sketches to practice, I thought of a neat idea.

Why don't people post images of sketches they've drawn on paper first. And then what the finished piece looks like afterwards as a sprite!

I think it'd be a neat learning experience at least.

Anyone dare to take a bite?

General Discussion / 3d vs 2d Myth (or is it?)
« on: June 11, 2010, 02:57:18 am »
So, before I started to do pixel art I dabbled into 3d work a little bit. I never really practiced it because I found the programs either to difficult to learn or a lack of good tutorials. So I said I can draw why not try pixel art? Or I thought I could draw at least. However, during my short trip in 3d I came across a number of forums and galleries and came across a reccuring claim. The thing was, that someone who couldn't draw worth crap (with pictures to prove it) could however, create a fully "working" coffee pot, ship, plane, car, or what have you in 3d and it look excellent. I always dismissed the claims that a 3d artist could do have excellent 3d modeling work and not excell in 2d in any form. Because clearly in order to work with 3d, you have to understand art to begin with, or at least I think.

So I'm asking you guys. Is it even possible that someone could be better in 3d art then they are working with any 2d art form? I mean, don't the same principles apply? Or were those 3d modelers just pulling people's legs?

Pixel Art / [wip] Small game, "Crippled"
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:45:31 am »
Hello!

To take a break from my open source project, I have decided to work on a small game (for real this time). In this game, you are trying to keep a dying tree alive during winter and then throughout the spring, summer, and fall. I have yet to draw the tree, but I have background and tiles. I am trying to keep realistic this time. And trying to keep a light source from the top to hopefully make shading easier. I would like help on everything but mostly the background. I am pretty sure my science is wrong, once you get 'above the clouds', there shouldn't be any more clouds up there. And Maple trees generally don't grow in this altitude either. Eh, oh well, I can take a little liberties with a game can't I?

Night

Cloudy Winter Day

Green Grass

I don't believe I've shown these tiles here before. They are from a holloween compo game I made last year I think. I entend to have the clouds scroll. And a fog roll in occasionally. Yet more science gone wrong. Anyways.

CnC please?

General Discussion / OUTLINES: discussion
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:22:31 pm »
Yep, it's that time again. So far, I've asked about animation and stlye, now it's outlines turn.

I know mr. Jad's (and a good number of people here) take on the use of lines/outlines on pixel art. I use them because, well, I generally suck at using color and everything else, but aside from that, mostly I think it's cause most commercial games use them.

I mean, look at 'em all! There are very few games that don't have an outline on the characters/objects that they do. So, I think, that's when a player decides to make his own, he instantly thinks that outlines are the only way to go to make it look good. Since every other game he's played has had outlines, his must have outlines too. Otherwise, it won't be "standard". Then they get here, post they're stuff, and everyone goes 'what the heck are you doing using outlines!!!!!'. I'm not using that as an excuse, mind you, just as analogy. (even though it mostly is accurate depiction of what i do here)

So, I'm just wondering what you all think about some things. When we played all those games as kids/young people, why did/do they all have outlines/black outlines on all/most of they're pixel art?
Why is it also, then, when we do something with outlines, (which is a habit that needs to be forcibly broken), that it looks better without them after all?

Also, what are you thoughts on the use of color vs outlines? Should they ever be used? And where should they be used if at all?

General Discussion / zbrush users, I need a little advice
« on: May 14, 2010, 05:37:11 am »
I am wanting to get a little back into 3d again. Pawige made a comment about thinking of sprite as an actual 3d model. So instead of thinking, why not have an actual 3d model instead to look at?

So, since obviously, I am unable to purchase zbrush, I have a question of the 30 day trial.

How does it behave after the 30 day trial is over?
Does it lock itself out completely and ask for a registration over and over?
Or does it allow you to keep using it under fairly limited conditions?

General Discussion / New banner for the site
« on: May 09, 2010, 07:28:27 pm »
Hello everyone!

Every now and then when I'm browsing search options or looking at the begginning of a thread, I am partially distracted by some random guy's head popping up (i have been told once that it's bruce lee)

I don't know about you, but when trying to disect someones pixel art for the first time, I find this rather annoying. I particularly find it somewhat distracting when trying to write a post such as this especially when I'm lost in thought trying to write a cirt.

I am more in favor of a still image or something of a different, or maybe a more colorful palette. Or the yus bird could be the new mascot of pixelation. Since he's doing a good job of holding the donate here banner.

So, I pose this question to you. Should the admins have someone do a new banner for the site? Or leave it as it has always been?

Personally, I think it needs changed. What's your opinion?
