General Discussion / My first time "teaching" pixelart
« on: August 22, 2011, 12:58:12 am »
Hi, some of you maybe know me already some of you don't.

My name is Daniel, i'm from Venezuela. I have been involed with pixelart since 2001 or so. This is my website: www.iloveui.com
I'm writing this post, because i need some help here.

Wonderfully i have the oportunity to "teach" pixelart to other ppl in a public library in my country in about 3 weeks. I don't considere myself as good to teach, but it's an opportunity that not much people have so i can't refuse this amazing oportinity to try to get more people invole in pixelart here in my country and also learn about more about pixelart at the same time. By the way, i already have a short list of the things i plan to teach and show. But i will appreciate if i can have some help here. This text, tutos, etc will also help in future for other SPANISH-SPEAKING peoples. (of course this is not definitive, but PLEASE, feel free to critict and add constructive comments about)

THE TEXT - CLICK HERE

This text is translated by google. I really don't have the time to translate to english now. So probably there are some error in the translations, but the basic idea is there.
Any kind of help is welcome! :D

Really thx for reading.
Daniel

General Discussion / Re: Selling prints of pixel art?
« on: August 06, 2011, 03:45:03 am »
Cool, I been using it since 5.0, hah gotcha beat!
i have been usign it since version 3.0!!! jajajaja i got you!!!! jajajajajajajajaj XDDDD (but actually im not joking) i used to "hack" the NEED FOR SPEED cars textures and for some school homeworks, i also learned corel draw (what a ugly program) but thats another story....
And btw, im sure there are MANY things i dont know about photoshop, that's for sure...

And Perihelion
i have sold, yes....

the price for a 33x23 inches posters (made on cloth) and transfer print, was about 25/30 each us$, and i think it was cheap, but that was the price.
these are the posters...

Im about to print new ones, but im still deciding the design! XDDD

General Discussion / Re: Pixel art in Photoshop, plugins/tips&tricks?
« on: August 06, 2011, 02:12:56 am »
I create my pixel art like this....
FILTER->PIXELATE->MOSAIC......
jajajajajajaja im kiddin!!

the only downside is not being able to make geometric shapes without anti-aliasing.

You can actually do it without AA, just UNCHECK the Anti-Alias option everywhere...
Press M, L o W and unckeck that option.
Press T (font) and select, None in the aa option (which is anti-alias)

I suppose you already know these but...
W, uncheck Contiguous, Tolerance 0, and you can select 1 color from your palette and then change it if you want. This is usefull for sprites and 1 layer stuff...
You can export the PSD into files like PNG, BMP, GIF o whatever.... (if you manage to create sprite animations) - FILE/SCRIPTS
If you also create VECTOR art, you can import to photoshop without AA

a tip,
if your scaling your pixel art try to use 200%, 300%, 400%, etc... or rounded numbers like... 240%, same for rotations... this maybe is a bit meh tip, but just in case! XDD. And as ptoing said... Nearest Neighbor first at all! :X

I use Photoshop because I don't like how GIMP is laid out...

Did you tried Paint.net, is pretty good and similar to photoshop... the main problem i have with that program is...the guy who code the program dont want to create a a photoshop clone (which actually is a lol, cause the program is almost equal). And also you cant config the KEYBOARD SHORTCUT, dont know why, but the guy who code the to program just dont want to add that option...

Hey, before anything... really thx for working on that wonderfull program!!! keep going guys!!!

And i have a question. how hard is to implement this algorith?

seens like superusefull in any pixel tool, but dont knwo how hard is to make it work!...

It seems nobody's going to get an open-source version anytime soon, so I guess I'll already implement the simplified algorithm in the interactive brush-rotation tool of Grafx2.
The simplified algorithm consists in:
- perform scale2x 3 times on the image,
- then use a standard "rotozoom" to rotate and divide size by 8 at the same time.

why not to send that to the ppl who is developing Grafx2???? im sure they will integrate that in the next version! :DDDD (another reason to get into Grafx2 sometime soon!)

lithander
...But it's hard to integrate that into your workflow when you're working on an image/spritesheet. I hoped for some image editor that rotation and rescaling, ideally with an WYSIWYG interface.

But it's okay if such a tool doesn't exist I just thought I was to blame for not being able to find it.
agree!!!!... soon! if the algorims is that simple i think it will be integrate sometime soon in the most used programs... and to be honestly.. wouldn't be strange that Adobe would integrate it in the future (when they get into this post! JAJAJA)

@madmenyo, this is the link Mathias mentioned...
http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=3467.0

there are plenty programs for different kind of persons/style and blah blah!, use whatever you fell confortable with. But if your loocking for something similar that some you already know, i would recomend you Paint.net, GIMP or Allegro Sprite Editor (ASE). those 3 are similar to photoshop, so you wont get lost. But i your looking for somethign new easy learn. Grafx2 probably is one of them, but as i said, use whatever you fell confortable with!... and if in that list you cant find anything, im doing a list (in spanish), with some more programs

hopes that help you!...

@EreKT, and photoshop don't sucks....  :P

@lithander, did you tried ROTSPRITE????... it actually do A REALLY DECENT (better) result than the photoshop scale/rotation. I have about 12 years using photoshop and i though the rotation/scale was decent, but ROTSPRITE actually do a LOT BETTER JOB!... so, if your loocking for rotation/scale QUICK, ROTSPRITE would be defenily the first option.

And... as Dusty said...
...If you work with an image 1000x1000 pixels large, rotating and such is no problem because it has a lot more data to work with. However, an image 32x32 pixels large only provides so much data for the algorithms to work with, so it's a lot easier to mess up....

so, bigger images works better for rotation and scale. And... if you scale x2.x3.x4.x5 and so on, you will be always in the safe place. Now, if you GO DOWN, you will start to get problems with the "new pixels" since the algorithm will put pixels mathematically. Also remember than pixelart is the smaller extent. So knowing this you will understand than some pixels will not exist or will appear a new ones, this if you go from bigger to smaller. And, Rotations with numbers with decimals will get problems for the altorithm too, so to be on the safe zone with rotation, try to use... 90/70/50/30° or numbers with no decimals or sharps angles.

totally awesome!!! this tool is nuts!!!... i tried with few of my pixels and all of them got really "smooth" result.

thx for sharing the link

if you guys got any result, plz post it here or in a new Post :D....

perhaps only members with a decent amount of posts (or members who look like they're actually going to stick around the boards) should be allowed in the event at all?

im totally agree with you  :y:. Otherwise this will always happend!, which is bad/shittie  :'(
