It gives a great feeling to the game, im not too great at space stuff so it's nice to see a mockup like this.. I do think it's a pitty you've just flipped over the image for the background, though it does kinda work..

I don't think that the small ships stand out enough, but I could be wrong..

However, you need references to know what to draw

I think this is wrong??? I mean, I think you can visualise from your mind or whatever, this is what creativity is???. I think references destroy your creativity, and for things that require creativity (like making "make beleive" tiles for a game) can decrease the quality of your work.

I also very much agree with what Adarias has said :).

cyas

I actually disagree, to start being creative and visualising what you want to draw you first need to know the fundamentals of drawing.. References can help you pick up what you don't already know, like where on the head the eyes usually need to go to look natural, how and why certain expressions look how they do.. as Adarias said drawing from observation is the only way to 'draw', any other time you're just using your memory..

But yes, a lot of art is using your imagination and creativity.. I don't think Andy is tryin to do this at the minute, copying an image gives me the impression he wants to know how to draw a face.. If he doesn't know were to start observing pictures and people around him is the only place to start..

PS: terly you cut the arms short on your edit.  not to pick on you but this is a common mistake.  hands should fall in the middle of the upper leg, not starting at the belt line like yours are here

yeah well I knew it was wrong  :-[,  I built the character on the proportions he'd marked out..

I tried to make the point that he doesn't have to use an outline, I wasn't planning on ripping into his character, just wanted to illustrate my point with what he had achieved. :-X

I'll leave the anatomy tips to those who can illustrate it well, words can only go so far.

thanks for the tip anyway.  ;)

hope this helps rerg, click on the image to zoom in..

(bad legs  :-[)

may not be the best example, as im still quite new to workin small but I think it'd help you if you work on the general structure of the character first and use all the colours to your advantage, what you're doing atm is planning out a wireframe character to help you judge the anatomy and drawing a part of the body one by one, I actually think it helps to be constantly changing everything, zooming in and out on every pixel placement to judge what you need to do to it.

oh and avoid using outlined characters at that size because it limits the detail you can add, unless your making a sprite that is.

well erm, hope I kinda helped..

May I ask whether the last of the tiles are reserved? cus I'd happily take one to get this beast finished.

I don't think such a small character would ever need any 'dithering', I tried cleaning it up, raised the saturation of this little character and I think it'd look like such a cute character to play in a game..

well when it comes to his walking, the arm movements look pretty good but yeah its the legs that look really let it down.. plus the fact that you've added a shadow makes it really hard to notice where the legs are moving to, giving it a wobble.. I think its the grey (metal) bits on his legs that need altering to show his foot's being lifted..

good job

love the model pose  :D

this definately looks great for a character, nice design work.. Do you have more of this character or is it just purely based from your avatar?

new project eh? looking forward to any mockups you come up with  ;)

theres parts of this I really think looks nice, the legs, the axe and parts of the muscle shading but I think from the waist up theres a lot of problems.

neaten it up a bit, use the 4 skin shades to your advantage especially the one your using to highlight, we need to see more of that.

hope you don't mind, editted slightly.. just fixed some bits.

even spruce up the colours a bit, it looks a bit dull and faded.

nice character..
