I am having a lot of trouble properly choosing colours to make it read well at this size, itīs a goblin. Could also use some pointers on anatomy.

You could try to make them pop into existence with a little popping effect (like when something vanishes or suddenly pops into being in a cartoon). Or you could try starting very small and then making them to this size from a single pixel, you'd have to do it pretty quickly though.

That's right, because if I remember correctly, everything is chrome in the future.
Jokes aside, maybe some chrome-y shinier metal pipes along with the regular dusty ones here and there could be a welcome change, maybe tiny wall pipes?

Woah, this went somewhere really fast!
I wanted to point out that when hue-shifting you should keep your values intact, but it seems that almost all that can be said has been said here ;)
It might be worth pointing out that Joe's edit uses blue tones, so that's a great example of what hues can do for you, like astral said.
