Sure, here are the references I used:

Also made up some stuff as I went just because I liked how it looked though :B
As for light sources, yeah I could pay more attention, but the lighter bits on the feathers, I think are the actual feathers having lighter colours on the ends.

Just made myself a new avatar :0
Didn't really care much about colour count, but each is used as much as possible, except perhaps the lightest blue.
But 26 colours if anyone is curious.

@ skamocore: Thanks for the edit, I'll keep it in mind when going back to the smileys.

@ EvilEye: Yup, everything was done by hand. How else? :0

It's been a while since I posted, so here goes my recent-ish stuff:

- Secret Santa gift for AdamAtomic

- Gift for Mirre

- Smileys for a LEGO forum (will make more eventually)

- c64 with MCol restrictions. Ptoing has been asking me to do one of these for years, so finally went for it :0
It was quite fun, though I didn't try weird things.
Aaand probably you wouldn't easily find a kabutomushi flying around during the day, but I just added it for kicks.

I consider all of these finished, but if you find something you want to point out I'll be all ears.

Well... David X. Cohen said Fox was happy with the performance of the dvds.
Not that it means anything, but I guess the chances of geting something after the movies are bigger than before.

This time's Commercial Critique Challenge is to study Blue Sphere's screens and create your own mockup following a similar style.

Now some points:

- Use GBC's Limitations
   - 8x8 Tiles
   - 8 four color palettes for the BG
   - 8 four color palettes for the sprites (one of the four being transparent)
   - RGB555 for the colors (optional for those who can't set the colors that way)
   - 160x144pxls
- Be clever with your tile usage!
- Animation is optional

Some references:

Find more screens in the Commercial Critique thread.

Commercial Critique / Commercial Critique - Star Ocean: Blue Sphere
« on: February 05, 2009, 01:29:52 pm »

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere

Platform: GameBoy Color
Developer: tri-Ace
Pubisher: Enix

Game Intro

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is a GameBoy Color game released in 2001, but since it never made it to the west, its existance is unknown for many.

Like the other entries on the series, Blue Sphere is an RPG, featuring a real time battle system. But unlike the previous ones, the enemy encounters are not random as you see all the monster sprites wandering around the screen.
Once you engage battle the game changes from top view to side scroller view, allowing you to move the characters when attacking for extra battle influence (which by the way, have rather comical, but nice animations).

World View, Menu, Battle, Accesories and Weapons, and Bestiary screens

But enough about the gameplay. If you take into account the limitations on the GBC, you can see the clever usage of tiles all over the place.
As you can see in the screenshots, the perspective changes constantly and even appears mixed, as ptoing put it, "it is all over the place.

Anyway, have fun examining the game screens.

Challenges & Activities / Re: Possible activity discussion.
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:03:26 am »
He said he didn't want to spend much time on it, and I wondered why we'd spend any time on it at all if a playable version did nothing more than what could be conveyed with mockups.

My thoughts exactly. Seeing everything in movement has its satisfaction though.
But if an activity was to be made, it'd be awesome if it was something proper.

Anyone else have any games they would like to see genre swapped?

Uhm, let's see:
- Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior)
- Pokémon
- Mr. Driller (though I guess if it was made into a platformer, it would be similar to Drill Dozer)

2D & 3D / Re: Portfolio
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:04:22 pm »
This ought to be in the portfolios forum, bottom of the front page.

Not necessarily.
He is making an interactive portfolio using these graphics and looking for criticism here, not showing one.
Please read before posting.
