Pixel Art / [WIP] 8-bit RPG Scene
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:25:43 am »
Greetings,

I am currently working on the scene above, inspired by some of the classic RPGs from the NES era. I'm however, having trouble with the perspective and the dragon. I'm hoping to get some magnificent mockup edits from more advanced artists. I believe this is one of the largest and complex pieces I've done before. Scenery is definitely not my specialty, but this is suppose to be a dark dungeon/castle. Maybe I should add another lightsource, such as a torch or two...

It also must be 8-bit, limited to 8 colors excluding transparency. I might use the 8th one for the dragon, as it is very dark.

Pixel Art / NES - RPG Monsters
« on: December 14, 2010, 01:58:08 am »
Some of this is old artwork, but mostly new. Trying to go for the Final Fantasy / Dragon Warrior RPG theme from the NES. Not sure if I'm limiting my colors correctly or not (trying to keep under 4 + black transparency) per sprite. I could use some clarification on the restrictions a bit if someone wants to iterate.

Feel free to edit any of it, even if it's just a single monster. All is a WIP.

Pixel Art / Monsters RPG WIP
« on: March 27, 2010, 03:49:21 pm »
Hello,

I don't post on here often so let me introduce myself a bit. I have worked on pixel art since 2005, here and there, mainly to mock up games that I liked. For the past year I have been working on my first actual game project that I call X-Fire. It is based off of a lot of elements from old RPGs, such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest from the NES and Mario RPG of the SNES. I always wanted to relive a new RPG that gave a VERY similar feel but striving for its own. While those RPGs were based off the past medieval times, I was trying to recreate something more modern, dark themed.

My problem is, I am not using correct pixel art methods, I'm told. I am also aware of my excess use in dithering, but I enjoy how it adds its own mood to my dark theme. I'm not sure if there are other ways of achieving this theme, and would like to know if there are. I am aware that my light source is inconsistent on separate pieces (monsters) and I have shaded them poorly. I wish I could see if someone more experienced can help me with these issues. Perhaps even redo one of my sprites just to see if I can still achieve the same dark theme I'm striving for, if that's not too much to ask. I would like to learn a better approach to what I am doing wrong.

Please be gentle, I've worked hard and long on designing each monster. :/

Pixel Art / [WIP] Dragon Warrior 4 Battle Theme
« on: August 10, 2008, 04:00:20 pm »
One day, a year ago I created a few sprites based on the old NES's Dragon Warrior 4 monsters. Why? Well, for one, it was my favorite NES RPG since the monster sprites impressed me what you could do with the 8 bit theme. Second, I was bored and had plenty of time in the world.

Ok, off the bat, there are problems with it, obviously:

1) I hate the cat. Proportions are horrible, shading is questionable, and color choice is VERY questionable. I am thinking I should just give it a new stance entirely, such as on all fours looking at the user.
2) I think the Beetle Knight with wings is probably the most native to the theme (since the use of black shading to blend with the background is used frequently). However, it doesn't seem to blend with the others, since it has no shading at all (if you ignore the black shading). I thought it didn't need any. Note that I used a quick reference to the StagBug from Dragon Warrior 4. If it looks too similar, I am sorry, avoiding this is somewhat hard for the 8 bit theme for this particular angle. Rest assured I got my teenage editing angst out of me years ago back in 2003 when editing things for RPG Maker peeked my interest. ;)
3) I'm pretty savy with the red hatted mage on the right there, except maybe the shoes I stole (poor me :P) from the Beetle Knight.
4) The terrapin, or turtle-like, fighter I am iffy on. While I do like seeing it look more alive than just standing there, I can't help but feel confused with the stance. Maybe it's my poor lighting? Note that it's head is different than any turtle you ever seen, and yes this is intentional for creativity reasons. ::)

I might show more little strange monster things in the future in this thread if I need some more C&C on the style. I really should edit the current ones right now, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to hear from some more professional level of 8 bit graphic art.

I would appreciate some C&C based on the 8 bit theme Dragon Warrior 4 created.
