General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

Oh, really, they fixed the melee spamming? See, that annoyed me so much I haven't picked the game up in quite a while... Maybe I need to crawl back and apologize to it, then.

Also, Helm, I'm not spoiled. L4D was the first Valve game I've ever bought. I have no expectations about their good graces. The exploit I'm talking about ended up being quite serious and I heard nothing about it for months, until I stopped playing the game. Then, today, I read about a fix for it - in another game. That'd be like Bungie releasing Halo 3 in order to fix the early problems with Halo 2. And believe me, H2 was very broken early on. Some things obviously can't be fixed unless it involves a serious redesign of gameplay elements, and we got those in Halo 3, but things like the cornercamping in L4D should be a very simple fix. They just seemed to never ever get around to it.

But if it's fixed now, then I'm very happy. I'll try it out again as soon as I can.

I read that they added the Charger special infected to solve one of the flaws with the first game, people cornercamping and spamming melee throughout crescendos without anything being able to touch them.

Well, thanks for including the fix for that in the game I didn't buy and haven't had a problem with yet because it's not out yet! Hey, how about making those fixes for the game that's already out? There's a lot of cool stuff that can be added to the experience to make it deeper. Yeah, like melee weapons, that's a good one. You can save those for the sequel. But please, if you have a fix for the biggest thing people are complaining about with the game, why not include it in the actual game people are complaining about? Are they seriously trying to force people to buy the sequel by not fixing a balance issue in the first game?

I like the little guy so far. The walk bothers me, though, it looks like his center of gravity is way back there. Walking is actually repeated falling forward and catching oneself with one leg. His legs are so far ahead of his body it looks more like he should tip backwards.

I've read that it's possible to almost-accurately depict a certain number of dimensions in a medium with one less dimension than the one depicted. Like, using 2D, we can give the illusion of 3D. To achieve something 4D, we would need to fake it through 3D. So it's definitely not possible to draw in 2D. If you really wanna give yourself a headache, go try to learn these games. http://harmen.vanderwal.eu/hypercube/

Hee. I'm hoping someone else'll pick up where I started with the critiques. I don't hang around these parts much nowdays, my pixel skills are incredibly rusty.

The thing I think bothers me is the overall anatomy. He doesn't have much in the way of features. His body looks a little like a blob with some other blobs stuck on it. And yes, the shading was the thing that made me feel the limbs looked sown on. There's a pretty obvious seam where the limbs meet the body. On the other hand, sonic's pretty much a blob, too, if that's the style you want to go for... Hm, I don't know. Apparently my critiquing skills are also fantastically rusty! Well, okay, one thing. His feet look kinda eerie to me. Even Sonic had shoes. If you don't wanna do shoes, consider giant kitty paws instead of feet.

Oh, there we go, things are coming back a bit. Slowly. If he's the main character, wouldn't you want his design to be a little snazzier? I'd want some sort of marking, at least, like white paws, or lighter belly or something. Pink chick's looking pretty snazzy though. I like the expression.

This might come off as sounding a bit harsh, but is he supposed to be a cat, or a dude in a cat suit? Right now, it looks like a suit to me. The shape of the body, the way the arms and legs seem sewn on, and the neckless head makes him look kinda like some sort of sports mascot or something. Also, why is his tail a baseball bat...? I'm sorry, that's just all I can think of when I look at him.

Wasn't the thread on Polycount enough...? You got plenty of comments there. Don't tell me you're just roaming the entire Internet for publicity or something.

Wow. I feel stupid. Over a year ago, when I started my internship during my 3D education, another guy at the same company had one of those. I was like "Why? Why would you need that?" and he said he really likes it for quickly controlling the volume on his comptuter when using headphones. And thus, in my head, the peripheral remained useless.

Why the heck didn't I think of using it for something like that? And why didn't he, for that matter? Considering he spent hours at end sculpting in Zbrush with his fancy tablet... and then spent many more hours polishing way too large textures in Photoshop... Really good thinking, there, Indigo. Do get back on how well you get along with them, and I might have to pick some up in the future. They could be very useful both for 2D and 3D work.

Got a bit of Max Payne constipation action going here, huh? I really don't like that expression, it looks very forced.

Well, that was amusing. I'd vaguely heard of him a few times but never looked it up, until now. I love his adorable little design things and quips about how smart he is. One video had an annotation explaining that, whenever you enter a building the character stays in the same spot on the screen to reduce disorientation ("How come the big teams never think of that?")

Then he runs around and you realize the character himself is all over the entire screen when just walking around normally, anyway, so why the heck does it matter??

So cute. Oh, and here's an idea... if you wanna make a game all by yourself, try to make it on a platform where you don't have to rely on other people, why don'tcha? DS games need both a kit from Nintendo, an official Nintendo license, and a publisher. A PC game needs... an Internet connection. Maybe, if he's so incredibly clever, he should've thought of that.

brb, gonna make a game all by myself.
