Pixel Art / Re: Understanding water flow in top down perspective
« on: March 20, 2019, 11:02:48 pm »
This is good progress, the water has some more personality now.

I get what you're saying in reference to matching tiles to each other's 8 frame animation sequence. My advice with that is try and work in sub-divisions that can equally divide into the main tile. Eg; if you're scrolling something on a 16x16 tile, and the anim is 8 frames, then it'd make sense to scroll it in 2 pixel increments. That is the most basic way to think about it, but the logic can be applied in various ways to make life easier and the animations more controlled.

Of course a big part of animating tiles is going to be finessing the work: it's one thing to get a standalone anim to look good, but to get an animation to cooperate with other animations in varying scenarios is going to require some amount of work for each possible scenario. You can break the tasks down into smaller goals if that makes things feel more manageable.

I think you have the right ideas. Usually the sine-wave type movement of water happens on more axis than just one. In your latest example you've captured that movement on one plane of an axis, but there are two more axes to consider. By applying that same math to the other axes you can better recreate the undulating motions of water. In general all things animate along arcs in a cyclical fashion, so understanding that principal will illuminate its uses as a tool in many different scenarios of animation.

I think it's very smart to research what you're trying to understand, and your attitude and approach are great! Looking forward to more progress, I think there could be a wealth of information for people to reference if you keep this thread active. Good luck!

Pixel Art / Re: Colors look too muddled? 32 x 32 tileset [WIP]

Agree on the yellow front. I had an issue w/ a poorly calibrated monitor many many years ago, during my first foray as a freelance pixel artist, and all of my art from that period had a yellow tinge to it. Based on the overall warm to all of your work, I feel that you may have an issue w/ ur monitor's color calibration. Maybe cross reference your work on a few devices. Overall the tiles are solid, so I think the color choices are what is affecting you most, which might not even be your fault or something ur aware of.

Tomic, thanks so much! It's looking great, sorry to hear about ur finger. Your mock up has some resemblance to this Chef RPG I've been dabbling with in my spare time, I will have to show you thru Twitter or Discord one day.

||||, sorry about your present, it looks like it uploaded weird. Here is another upload.
Edit: It might be my browser settings, because this upload looks similarly jaggy to me. Just let me know if it's pixel perfect or not.

try idraw3, it doesn't have a lot of documentation on it, but is a pretty robust pixel editor that was around back in the rpgmaker2000 days.

I used to use it professionally for nearly 6 years, so it should serve its purpose.

Thx for the awesome present Rhubarbist. Love the overall aesthetic and matching box. Hopefully sometime this year I end up some place as magical as the one you pixeled. Thanks again!

I'm in!

As for inspiration, take as much or as little as you like from this free form poem:

moon, night, sky, aquamarine hues, shift blue, blaze bright, luminous light, touch clouds, rain down, beautiful baths, shimmering veils, petals on air meet fate like moth to flame, tumultuous descent, flickering death, remnant embers wrest smoke from lucid pools.

Pixel Art / Re: Shadows of Adam [updated 5/10: new logo!]

Updated the logo a bit based on some feedback from Jalonso on pixeljoint. I only edited the pixel version, the hi-res is the same for now. Most of the edits were for consistency across the font. Overall I think I like it better.

Saved out both images with a background that better approximates how it will appear in game and elsewhere.

Sorry for the inactivity. Been super busy with an impending move, so I haven't had time to update.

@hawken, this project has been in development for about a year and a half. We've all worked on it in our spare time mostly, but the past six months development has been taken more seriously and given more priority.

We recently settled on a logo for our game, and I was tasked with scaling it down to the pixel level. It's mostly complete, but I feel like the AA work could be better in places. What do you think of the logo overall? Does it capture your attention? What does it make you think of? Any feedback appreciated.
