Pixel Art / Re: Interactive piece (W.I.P)

Alright, after a miserable month with approximately 0 updates, I finally have something to show.

I've finish up the town scene and also rectify some problems previously pointed out by some of you guys here.

I've mainly work on the perspective issue. Now you can see a glimpse of the back roof. I think if we were to pick, it still looks kinda weird. But I have been trying for so long on this issue, I hope if any of you knows how to make it nicer, please help me out here.

I've also worked on the grass patch colors, the well, the bridge, pond and the new floor tiles.

I've created new versions of the characters too.
They now cos-play as Solid Snake with Meryl and a Mario with Princes Peach.

Btw, I was wondering what software do you use to animate gif? I plan to use flash, but that means I will have to finish everything in PS before I lay them out in flash to check the animation, and going back and forth like this can be quite a pain.

Lastly, I just want to apologize for the late update. My computer died on me, so I didn't have a choice. I have also updated my blog so if you're interested, go say hi!

I loves your stuff!
Just want you to know that before I go on pointing very minor stuff with the C&C, hehe.

She
-I think she's looking a bit too masculine right now, so you might want to consider losing some details.
-Her mouth still looks too wide for me. Maybe because teeth is something so bright, it makes it feels as though it's taking up 1/2 of the face.
-I realize you made her eye looked more like a "n" shape. But from the photo here, the lower line of her eyes seems pretty straight.
-as for being too symmetrical, I realized her right face is thinner then the left, and her right eye is maybe a pixel smaller the her left.

You
-I think you made yourselve looked a bit too old / muscular.
-or have a few more hair stranding

I loves the colors here...and the style pretty much reminds me of FEZ, I don't know why.

Anyway, here's some of my thoughts...
-I'd try avoiding having the top of the monkey's head being on equal level of the background.
-maybe change the clouds or remove them.
-I understand that you're going for a very "cube" styling here, but I'd be working on something that looks more like a low polygon 3D if I were you. In that case, it gives you the freedom to be more expressive on whatever you want to build on in the future.

Maybe it's a matter of preference, so it's really up to what you're looking for.
Then again, I really do enjoy the wonderful styling.

wao, Arachne's edit looks pretty neat.
The proportion of the character looks cute and how clean it looks.
Guess there's quite bit for us to learn here.

Btw, I've always like high-school theme character design ; )

Wao- though I'm not exactly a fan of "realistic" approach, I must say I am especially impress by how crispy and 3D everything looked. The old man there could use some work though. Maybe slightly longer or something. I'm very much looking forward to this :)

Hi all, thanks a lot for the fast reply!
I'm already seeing lots of useful tips here which I can work with.

Zenobia + Cake Sama > I'm really glad that you like it. I used this green thinking that it would set the cute and cuddly tone I was going for, but I guess I overdo it a little. Probably get it change as many of you guys did point it out.

AlienQuark > I guess you're right. The 2 characters are one of the 1st thing that I worked on, so I guess it looks pretty off. However, there are things that I have to stick to, like the cat being grey and the dog being orange, since the color stand for my brother and his bride, and I intend to stay true to that. Then again, I guess I can play around with the saturation a little so not to let the environment steal all the show. I am definitely looking forward to your edition, so please do : )

Feron > Thanks for pointing out the perspective issue. I guess I got carried away while working on it. I also spotted the can in the factory scene to be wrong.

Vertigo-zero> hmmm... I did consider the character size issue before, but I decides to go ahead with it. Maybe I will wait and see what others think of it.

ndchristie > I love this forum. Everyone seems to point out something I missed out. I shall add the shadow then. Thanks!

I hoping to hear some comments on the room/house interior do. There's a wood version, and an apartment version. So hopefully, you guys can let me know which you prefer. Also, on technical issue, I have another thread here at http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=6330.0

Thanks!

Pixel Art / Interactive piece (W.I.P)
« on: May 29, 2008, 06:59:03 pm »
Hi all, here's my first thread in the artwork section (previously asked some questions in the discussion section which I'm still in need of help with).
Anyway, I have recently started working on a "flash-base RPG game engine interactive piece",
a gift for my brother's wedding, where both the bride and the groom are from the game industry.

I did a tiny bit of pixel arts quite a few years ago, but I never get to carry on as there was no commercial value back then, from where I were.
Till now, I finally get to work on pixel again, and thought that some C&C would definitely be necessary.

Anyway, I'm still in a very early stage of the project at the moment, and lots of scenes were to be made.
I'm hoping to make an effort and post my progress from time to time.

Here are some early shot of the character

The room/house of the protagonist

The town where they reside

ABC Building nearby

I'm hoping to get some advise especially on the interior shot of the room.
There's a wood house version which I modify from the original "apartment" style.
And since the apartment was the original, most of the colors does not seems matching to me when I changed the wall colors.
What do you think?

Also, just to mention some of my source, I took quite a bit of reference from games like Zelda (minish cap and link's awakening), Earthbound for a clean look, Dragon Quest 6 for layout ideas, and Pokemon for it's urban areas. As for characters, I was looking more at zelda and FFVI.

If you find what you see here presentable, take a look at my new blog too.
It's more of vectors and design then pixel art though.
But it's brand new, so bookmark and check back soon, since it's pretty empty right now.

Hope to hear from you guys soon ; )

General Discussion / Re: Questions on Pixel Art for Flash Game
« on: May 23, 2008, 03:52:15 am »
Hi KittenMaster and Fil_razor, my computer broke down earlier and wasn't able to log in to thanks you guys for the advise.

Anyway, the supertiles engine seems amazing, except for the fact that since I'm not a programmer, I might be dare to venture into it at the moment.
I have begin to work on further and realize slowly that not working on the tiles system also makes the artwork even more tedious, since there's no restriction,  you tends to overdo, which might not be the most suitable for my case.

I shall make a link when I finally post in the artwork section, and hopefully, you guys can give me some comments on the artwork too ; )

General Discussion / Questions on Pixel Art for Flash Game
« on: May 12, 2008, 07:03:32 pm »
Hi all, I've been lurking around for quite sometime now, looking for answers, reference, and of course beautiful artwork produce by the many genius over here.

But I've recently started working on a flash-base RPG game engine interactive piece... if it makes sense to anyone.
Anyway, I am not entirely new to working on pixel art nor flash, though at the same time, I am a master of neither.

I'd like to get some advise here...
Apart from file size issue, is it necessary to produce pixel arts in tiles&grids when working in flash?
What is the rational behind? Back in the days, it was done due to restrictions. So are we doing it now mainly for the style?
What are the problems to face if I'd produce something that looks like your usual SNES RPG, but ignore the grid and tile systems?
What if I just go ahead and create pixel art for the solely the visual?

Let me name a few example I have encounter so far.
1) Realizing the door being too small for the character, only after I finish working on the door.
2) Messy files with endless layering
3) Needs a even better vision of the end result
4) having to change lots of small details manually when you decides a change on the color scheme

Anyway, not to disregard the benefits of ignoring the grid, here are some good things.
1) patterns like floor panels are more random
2) The walking areas are much more forgiving, given the fact that without grid, your character can now walk by pixels, instead of maybe 30pixel a step
3) you can still use tiles at certain point when you deem necessary, just to cut down on workload.
4) Every objects become much easier to composite together without the grid and tiles restrictions.

I'm pretty sure there's quite a handful more for both, but I will add them into the list when I have them.

Lastly, I'm thinking of using Photoshop to draw my pixel art.
I layer them up for the animation, bring them over to flash so that I can export them as gif, and later uses them in flash for the interactive.
Is this gonna cause me any problems? I'm very comfortable with flash, but are there any better software to do so? Or am I gonna face any problem in flash like an auto anti-aliasing tool for animation gifs?

A huge thanks in advance to everyone that reads and replies.
Shall upload the artwork once I have enough to show.

(Pardon for the English, as it is not my mother tongue.)
