Hi folks, I am experimenting with a game design in which the player character is a tiny silhouette style sprite. The sort of game I am doing might have a Limo feel.

I know my biggest weak spot is character design but most specifically animating and I am really struggling to animate this character.

Ideally the game will be 60fps and the char might have a range of abilities like parkor, climbing, jumping,  sliding, run jumping, edge grabbing..etc  something a kin to flashback but faster in pace/action.

Here is my attempt at a simple walk cycle, and as you can see I am really finding it hard to do, I think this time around for me its extra hard because of so few pixels to work with.

The example above is only using 7 pose frames so the walk should be smoother, but I didn't bother expanding the frames between these 7 key frames because it already looks bad.
I also tried a climb up ledge and it came out just as bad.

I recently saw this post
http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=22427.0
And I am very impressed and I realize this persons resolution is much higher, but it its the sort of smoothness and variety of movements I am looking for with my tiny sprite.

Dose anyone have any tips?

I am considering scaling the char up 300+%  for the game so I can link/tween the animation in something like spriter, but I might end up loosing the pixel art feel of the animation.

Anyway If anyone has any advice ,  is the quality and smoothness of movement I am looking for just unrealistic and impractical for such a low res sprite?

The game I am working on I "think" is a potentially strong idea and my hope is to get it produced with a month or two at most, so while I am posting this I may as well ask if there is anyone who might help me with the player characters animation alone. The game will be sold so naturally there would be some reward eventually.

Anyway.. I hope someone can offer some advice or even hop on board.

Howdo.

It's a nice piece, love the composition and mood of it, but I stared at your knight a few times and I am a bit confused as to what shape/pose he is in. Ok I assume its a typical knight kneeling pose, but there are some things going on there like in particular the back, sometimes it looks like hes got 3 legs, other times I look the back looks like an arm leaning on his left leg but then his pose to me looks like hes squatting with his legs wide open. Anyway i just thought it was a bit odd looking.

I didn't get much time with this and my result has lost a bit of that stylized look I "think" you where going for (ie sword and sworcery stylized stick figure look), but perhaps you can find some middle ground to what I have done and your style to make it look more obvious he is in a respectful kneeling pose.

I also swapped around some colors to make both him and grave a little more prominent, re-did the grass and birds, though the birds I will admit are a bit shitty heh

Anyhoo it's a nice piece to begin with, good work, I would agree with mystery and say the whole background could to with a re-fiddle

Hey nice poster. I agree needs stronger contrast and color balance too I think.

Anyway just a touch of color balance, stronger contrast, and also picked out a few details in particular the emissive parts to make them a bit stronger.  Not sure if you use photoshop but I have also provided you with the psd so you can fiddle with things yourself if you wish.

Couple of other versions and the psd

If you have your space background separate I would suggest working on that since your gradient is quite delicate messing about with general contrast tends to introduce banding by the gradients of the nebula. have a mess about with it anyway

32, although the posts from others make sense now, it was your post that made my finally clock how this works. Yes i moved the box and there under it was the skin.

That shape is a laptop screen, its colors is off black, and the cross a drew is off white.
The idea was to animate a space invaders type animation on this screen. and naturally the first thing i did was take the black(screen) and copy this out many times so i had a series of blank "screens" ..  then, naturally i would assume if i draw something on the first screen i would see that faded with the skin on the next frame. however this is now a conundrum.. so basically I have to copy the screen every new frame as I go?... or is the onions skin in my case useless for what i am trying to do?

As mentioned before i did try have the screen on its own layer and the activity on screen on a layer above, but i assume its the same case.

I just don't know, would it not be better for gale to take a temp image of the last frame and "overlay" a fade of it onto the next frame rather then underlay it.. seems like that would be more useful.

In effect for me to do this with onion skin would require me to re-create the last frame by copy/pasting elements , before any actual animation modification was done.

Heya surt

well.. um.. if you are referring to the cross i painted to test the onionskin you can clearly see I did not use pure white, i used an off white well away from 255 255 255.

If you are not referring to the cross, then call me dumb as I still don't get this.

So what your saying is in order for graphics gale to use the onion skin i cant have any transparent background on the animation at all? but what if my animation needed to be on a transparent background for exporting?

I think i have given up with this to be honest, the context of this is a project with a dead line this weekend and I have wasted in excess of 4 hours just battling with this onion skin bullshit ....so i think gale and myself have burnt our bridges with respect using it as a solution for animating anything beyond extremely basic stuff.

This is a woeful, truly woeful implementation of a feature. My dog could implement this better.

Um, I have exported many many images out of gale with out even so much as looking/modifying anything in the "frame" properties..

I don't seem to have trouble exporting any amount of alpha just by setting each layer properties .

Surely you mean the other way around yammon17?

A tad confusing all this.. anyway here is the video, if anyone can tell me what on earth I am doing wrong it would be great

No matter if this works or not, i still believe this is a terrible implementation of a feature that aught to be straight forward. I mean I have used softwares in the past with onion skins.

you know what? heh.. well perhaps i was a bit too quick in my last post to say i got this working, I did, for some reason get it working , but now its not working
I will have to make a video , because I just don't understand this at all, even with your detailed steps.

It may be some time for the video

your getting a "+" after your name in the credits..

But!..  this aught to be made much clear in the docs.. Ok in hindsight what the doc says dose make sense, and I have got it to work, however I am a bit confused as to the difference in setting layer property transparency (copying this layer/set of layers across frames) and frame transparency on the frame property itself

What I usually do is when I am working with an animation, I tend to always have it on a transparent background via "layer properties), then copy frames, and all those frames are set to transparent background.

Still quite confuzzled, there are 2 types of transparency that seem totally independent of each other.

Like when i create an image, go to layer properties, check transparency,  .. then bring up frames windows, check frames property its now un-ticked?

If this is too tricky to explain it really dose not matter, At least i got it working

thanks again PixelPiledriver

General Discussion / Graphics Gale Onion Skin REFUSES to work

Hey folks

Once, perhaps twice I used the onion skin feature in graphics gale, a while ago.
Now.. its simply never works, dose nothing at all.
I have no idea what the hell is going on here.

I have googled and googled looking for the issues, found some semi-related posts but nothing with solutions to this.

Dose anyone have issues with gale and its onion skin feature?

No matter what I do,  it NEVER works.. dose not even try.

For example i have a blank canvas

I make 3 frames, I put one black pixel down, then go to the next frame .. where is the previous faded frame? I have tried setting the useless tool to forward, back, forward and back... still dose nothing.

I have tried creating 2 layers, one for the black dot, then creating 3 frames... on frame 1 i stamp down one black pixel on its own layer, next frame., nothing.. what is the point of this tool? how dose it work? Yes I have read the docs. It simple says the obvious, which im doing, but its not working.. never works

So i try set up elaborate layers including alpha chans..  make a bunch of frames, try to make a modification on first frame, any modification.... i click next frame... nothing..

I have re-installed this 3 times
I have re-downloaded it from the site 2 times.
Re-booted my pc
Scanned for virus..etc etc etc

Nothing makes this onion skin work... and what really frustrates me I HAVE used this before only 2 months or so back...  it worked fine, did as you would expect,, only used it a couple of times.

And now that I really need it fails, not just fails, but is non-existent

Dose anyone know what is with this tool?

Cheers for the link there, looking into it.
I just managed to get a screen record (not ideal for game use) done just for demonstration reasons of what I am trying to do.
https://youtu.be/r3t4fp8IYMI
(you wont see the 60fps without choosing 720p on the youtube settings)

Youtube messed about with the rate consistency, but I guess you can get the general idea of what im trying to do.

Apparently there is a method to converting the mc's to graphic symbols, however I have not had much luck with that, so this swfrenderer might be the thing to finally sort this out

cheers again
