Commercial Critique / Commercial Critique Challenge: Demon's Crest
« on: May 11, 2006, 09:36:09 pm »
If the mods don't want a CCC or they had one planned and I only made one before them, I guess they can delete this.  But if not I hope that this will take off and people will find interest in it, and that it will spark more interest in the Commercial Critique thread. Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how I should do this differently, I am up to hear them.

THE SCENARIO:  Capcom recently decided to port Demon's Crest to the GBA, and with the port they are adding new content.  Unfortunately, all the old artists from the original game have mysteriously disappeared.  So, Capcom needs some new talent who can mimic the style of DC to work on the GBA version.  Will this new talent be you?

THE CHALLENGE:  We're going to start off with a sprite challenge, as that's generally friendlier and easier to get into.  Now, as you may know, Demon's Crest is a spin off of the Ghouls 'n' Ghosts series, where the character Firebrand is an enemy.  So, for this challenge, Capcom wants you to pixel the idle frame for the main character of GnG in Demon's Crest style as a boss sprite.  Here is the sprite of the main character, Arthur from Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, if you're not familiar with the game:

Use your knowledge of DC style that we are studying in the Commercial Critique thread to translate this character to DC style.  You can either pixel the armor version or the underpants version, or both.  Feel free to interpret the character creatively, and don't be held back by thinking you have to keep to this pose.  It'd probably be best if you didn't.  Size is up to you, but keep in mind the size of Firebrand and how it would work in the game.  Colors, however, are limited to 16 colors including transparency.

For now, Capcom needs your submission by May 18th, a week from this posting.

Good luck!

Pixel Art / Tiles...
« on: April 26, 2006, 05:15:05 am »
...are not a strong point of mine.  Help me make them one?

I was going to post this when I finished the tree, but I broke down.  I'm not sure about the direction I'm going with the foliage; a friend of mine said that the leaves might be too much on the eyes, and I think I may be getting what he meant... what do you guys think?  I was thinking about trying a more symbolic representation rather than drawing each leaf like that but I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing that.

I'd like a lot of the critique centered around the house, however.  I think it's all right, but it's not specatular.  It seems... lackluster.

Any other critiques are welcome, though.

Oh yeah, the sprite there is NOT mine.  It's only there to show what style and size the tiles are supposed to fit.

Pixel Art / You better get out this here town, stranger...

I decided I really needed to practice palettes and mixing colors.  15 colors including transparency.

EDIT:  Image should work now.

General Discussion / Favorite Pixel Art
« on: March 07, 2006, 08:05:35 am »
Post here pixel art that you've dug enough to save to your computer.  I don't mean this to be an butt-kissing thread, just a resource spot for people to post art for people who may not have seen them.  I'm mostly doing this for selfish reasons, as all the art that I had saved from days gone by got wiped from my computer a few years ago (including all of mine (though I don't by many means expect anyone to have art by varken on their computer, but I would love you to no end if you did, heh)) and I'm mostly hoping to see a lot of art from people that aren't around anymore, but just post your favorites.  I guess I'll get the ball rolling, although I unfortunately only have mostly more recent stuff or stuff you could find pretty easily.

By xenodragon.  I can't for the life of me remember where I found this.

By Jeremy Dower.  Found it at his website: www.jeremydower.com

The only real oldie I think I have on my computer.  By Z Gravity.  If anyone has the jump animation he did with that guy with the big asian style hat who was wrapped in bandages, I'd be really interested in seeing that again.

Pixel Art / Portrait of a girl
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:54:13 pm »
I don't really feel that this should warrant a topic, as this piece isn't finished yet... but I'm so unsure about it that I don't know what to do.  Her left arm is done, or, at least I FEEL it should be done.  But I can't stop editing it, and I don't seem to be getting anywhere.  I feel like I'm using too many colors, or that I'm not using the colors wisely.  It just doesn't feel done to me.  Any critiwues or comments or suggestion or whatever about it would be great

Any other crtis about this piece would be appreciated, too, of course.

General Discussion / Commercial Critiques

Back during the election there was a bunch of promises about bringing Commercial Critiques back.  That was over two months ago.

What happened?

Pixel Art / Furniture and face WIP
« on: November 22, 2005, 03:00:06 am »
Here's some furniture I did for no reason.  It was surprisingly refreshing to pixel something so mundane.

And, here's a face WIP, where I was keeping to 5 colors, for no reason to practice color use and dithering.  I'm having trouble with it, I'm not very good at dithering.  The most done areas are from the eyes down to the mouth.  Any help at all on this would be greatly appreciated.

And comments and critiques would be great.

Pixel Art / RPG sprite
« on: November 02, 2005, 07:16:25 am »
This is something I did out of boredom/inspiration today, even though there are other things I should be working on.  It's something drastically different from my usual style, particularly in the proportions.  It's only one RPG sprite, and it may not be much, but, I'm very proud of it, and it's certainly much better than any other RPG sprite I've done.  It's got me thinking about I've improved over the years, even when I thought I was kick ass.  Heh, I hope some day I will look back on this someday and think "What, I thought that was good!?"  Anyway, sorry if this sounds like bragging, so I'm just going to post it now and give you guys a chance to knock me off my pedestal, heh.  In depth critique is much appreciated.

When I was making this guy I was mostly thinking about how an RPG inspired by Don Quixote would be, heh.

I'll probably update with more little guys...

EDIT:  Nixed the cape, and made a small edit to the hand.  Thanks for the comments, guys.  Here's a jester.  I'm not as happy with it, but I think it came out well.  More C&C are always appreciated.  Old man 11 colors, jester 16.

General Discussion / Oekaki?
« on: August 18, 2005, 07:29:37 am »
What, exactly, is oekaki?  It appears to me that it is a sort of blend between drawing and pixeling, although some I've seen have more pixel-level intent than others.  Gustav's, for example, seem so exact when drawn that it makes me think that there is most definately pixel intent work being done.  Unless Gustav's stuff there doesn't really classify as oekaki... but then again that's why I'm posting this.  I've never been able to find a good answer about it.  Is it usually done with a tablet as opposed to a mouse?  How much pixel level detail do you usually expect to go into?  Why can't I be awesome like Gustav?  Thanks.

Pixel Art / Run, ninja! (Update with more animations)
« on: August 05, 2005, 04:32:12 am »
So recently I've decided to help someone out in making a game, for fun and to increase pixelling abilities.  And so, I'm doing something I've hardly done before: animating.  So the first thing I've decided to do is a ninja run cycle.

I've been working on it for a few hours, but no matter how much I keep editing small details, it still looks a little off to me.  I'm not sure what it is, though.  If anyone could take a look at this and point out where I'm going wrong, or just general pointers about animating, that'd be great.  Also, is it generally a good idea to sketch out the animation frames on paper, first?

EDIT:  The legs are too short, aren't they?
