Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Phantis: Protagonist Sprite
« on: December 01, 2012, 08:20:09 pm »
Hey Carnivac, man - the extreme bg of that shot was kind of an afterthought, but it looked alright, and I just left it in there. It's probably the only non-pixel thing in the game (well, that and a negative-space-ish foreground, because it's supposed to be kind of blurry).
I have decided to overhaul the player sprite because I just couldn't get attached to my original character design, which was somewhat more closely based on the original. The new design also seems to match the rest of the world and wacky characters a bit better, though it is definitely more cutesy.
Here - a video of the game in action with the "cute" design: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gJiIP9aTgw

Not sure what you mean by "tiling" but in most other areas I totally agree with all your pointed out mistakes. Some where oversights, others happened because I just said "fuck it". Yet others are possibly a byproduct of the schizophrenic process I used to draw this.

It's probably going to be tough to get the rest of the game to match up with something like this
I totally understand your concern. I'd probably have to soften the transition to tiles a bit. Probably by populating the adjacent screen with large setpieces. I'll find a way: )

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#068 - High Detail Environment Scene

Okay - I decided to make the starting location of my, otherwise entirely tile-based game a large pixel painting. It took me a ridiculous amount of effort to get it even to this point, where I've decided to call it done.

I totally agree with Big Brother - the newest edit is a far cry from the original piece which, in my opinion required far fewer changes than was suggested by Helm and miascugh. The new colors feel drab and dull next to the bold, yummy originals. The detail adds nothing but needless clutter and depth issues. Her boobs are now lopsided, and her face now has an amerime tude'-grin, as opposed to a far more expressive original. The far leg of the original image is positioned far more naturally and is better shaded than both, the latest author's and Helm's edits. Not to say that leg looked perfect in the original - there is a bit of an issue with the shin angle, but it could be fixed by shifting a couple of pixels around, and not redrawing half of the image.

Sometimes less is more.

Wow - that's a lot of art! Is there a playeble/tech demo version of the game somewhere, or at least in works?

Yo!: )
I think you make him pause in the wrong place of the animation, making his step more hesitant, and losing any weight impact.
I have concocted a super quick edit over here - see if this works better:

I have cut two frames one for each leg in mid-step, and added two frames by essentially doubling the duration of the step impact, slightly emphasizing it. Also rebalanced his near arm - it was swinging way too far forward. The edit is rough, so I didn't exactly follow your model design. Sorry.

^^Not to redesign your dude - but I kinda felt like his idle stance was a bit unstable and shy.

I agree with both Conceit and Ben - the new character design is sort of unremarkable in any way. Nothing about his clothe, nor about his hair or posture says "unique player character" - he might as well be a background NPC cloned several dozen times throughout the game. Even if you wanted to move in a more realistically-proportioned direction, you should've studied character designs of SNK and Arcsys fighting games, trying to infuse your creation with eye-catching flair rather than burning mediocrity... unless that's the idea: )
In a world of bizarre characters you don't want your main guy to be the boring one,  right?

Not entirely certain what you were going for here (lazy, lazy me - I didn't even read the topic description as my brain barely functions tonight), but here's my edit.

I changed her quite a bit
 - Shortened her midsection as it looked unreasonably long to me.
 - Decreased the chest height.
 - Changed the face - her eyes are closed... are they supposed to be closed?
 - Slightly changed the leg position - again - not sure if this is the pose you were going for.
 - Slightly altered her hands. I wasn't certain what was she doing before.
 - Reshaded some parts.
 - Sorry for giving her panties: )

Awesome new tileset! Completely unexpected and extraordinarily stylized - totally you man! When I said "eagle armor" I ment more along the lines of this though:
