General Discussion / Re: Ethics
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:02:50 pm »
When I started pixel art, I spent a lot of time studying sprites from the Metal Slug games. For a couple of years, all of my art used colours taken from those games (as well as a couple more that I added when I didn't already have a suitable colour). I suppose that there's nothing really wrong with using someone else's palette, but once you become good it's nice to pick your own because you can tailor it to whatever you're working on.

Plus, you lose the the little voice in the back of your head trying to convince you that it's ethically wrong. (which you probably have or you wouldn't have started this topic in the first place)

I'll listen to (almost) anything, but my favourite music overall would have to be prog rock.

My faves:
Rush - Three guys in their mid-50's who are still, from a technical standpoint, some of the best musicians ever (even if Geddy Lee's voice has suffered a bit over the years). The drummer, Neil Peart, won several "best rock drummer" awards until they put him on the judging staff so that he couldn't run anymore. I'm going to one of their concerts in July.

Boston - Had the best vocalist in all history until he killed himself last year. R.I.P. Brad Delp. Apparently Boston recently decided that they needed two more vocalists in an attempt to make up for the loss.

Triumph - An 80's metal band. Not much to say about them, but this is an awesome song.

Kansas - My favourite American band. Sort of a happy medium between the previous three, but with more violin.

...And a very special one:
The Lunateers - Eleven close friends of mine who are semi-officially the best new band in Ontario.

That song won the contest for them.

That's better, but I think that the way that his bandanna waves is not quite as smooth as it was before (because of the doubling up of frames #3 and 4).
I can't think of any good way to fix that and keep it down to 4 frames though.

I like shraprm's edit. Somehow having a butt makes it look like he's leaning further into the run.

All of this amazing.

My only criticism is about the jump animation and the fact that his hair doesn't move. I'm pretty sure that you were going to fix that anyway though.

That boss is indeed still in the game; all the "main" bosses are dinosaur themed actually.
It sounds like you know what the other bosses look like. Do you have any other boss finished/in construction? Because if you do, I'm pretty sure we'd all like to see them. That one boss is fantastic.

Great stuff. Keep up the good work.

Of course, I never played the game so don't know what the sprite your are emulating looks like ( post it maybe? ).

Metal Gear Solid is a 3D game for the Playstation, so he's basing it on a model, not a sprite (the original games were for the NES, but they were from a bird's eye view).
Here's some footage. When he's not in a cutscene you can see the run that Conceit is trying to mimic.

By the way, if you own a Playstation, you should definitely give the games a try. They're awesome.

It's looking quite good but I also agree that it looks strange with his arms moving twice as fast as his legs.

General Discussion / Re: Choosing colors and pallettes

very recent study, and a very interesting one

That is interesting, although I didn't read all of it. Too tired to even try to understand it all right now.
Everyone being descended from one blue-eyed person makes sense to me, except for the fact that blue eyes are a recessive trait. Did they explain somewhere in the study why blue eyes didn't die out immediately with the first person?

I should add that females can distinguish more colours in the red/orange range compared to males. Apparently women gathered flowers/fruits/leaves etc. while the men hunted animals which were less colourful, whilst we were evolving.  :y:

Women generally have better/more vibrant colour vision because they have more cone cells in their eyes. Men have more rod cells, so they can generally see contrast better. Also, apparently due to some sort of abnormality on the X chromosome, some women are tetrachromats:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrachromacy

I think that there is a good argument for light-eyed people being overly sensitive to light (might be interesting to research someplace where blue eyes are very common, see if it's less damn shiny.)

I think this is bullshit. I have verry (verry) dark hazel eyes (mostly dark chocolate brown with an extremely dark green ring) and my eyes are light sensitive. To the extent that i have photo-sensative lenses in my glasses that change shade (from clear to verry dark sunglass colour) depending on the brightness of the light hitting them. This is because otherwise i get constant miagrains, eye pain, tempory blindness and watering eyes i can't hold open, in bright light or whilst looking at especially bright colours or shiny things.

So from personal experiance i see a big flaw in that argument. I think it's person to person and gender related rather than anything to do with your eye colour.

He didn't say anything about dark-eyed people all being less than over-sensitive. Only that light-eyed people are more often. I have blue eyes and also own a pair of Transition lenses. Handy, aren't they?

Anyway, back to the choosing palettes topic: I usually select my initial palette colours by picking straight off of the board and rounding the RGB values to the nearest multiples of 5, but if I edit the colours later, I use HSL to fix them up.

I am ISTP.

I - 61%
S - 50%
T - 60%
P - 77%

"Like their fellow SPs, ISTPs are fundamentally Performers (note the capital 'P' :-)), but as Ts their areas of interest tend to be mechanical rather than artistic like those of ISFPs, and unlike most ESPs they do not present an impression of constant activity. On the contrary, they lie dormant, saving their energy until a project or an adventure worthy of their time comes along--and then they launch themselves at it. The apparently frenzied state that inevitably ensues is actually much more controlled than it appears--ISTPs always seem to know what they're doing when it comes to physical or mechanical obstacles--but the whole chain of events presents a confusing and paradoxical picture to an outsider."

An amusing little tool. Upload a picture of yourself, and alter your age and race. Aging works quite well, but making yourself younger... not so much. The race bit is also hilarious.
I might post a few pictures that I generated with it later. I will apparently be a VERY creepy old man.

As far as the line art goes, the tree could use some roots and the perspective on the lake doesn't look quite right to me.

I think it would be easier to comment on if it was a bit more fleshed out. So far all that you really have is some line art with mostly solid colours blocked in. The stuff that has already been shaded looks pretty good so far. The leaves, grass, water, and the drop into the lake need some texture for starters. You're bound to find so good help with those under the resource thread in the tutorial and reference sections: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=3467.0

Bumped. With a double post. Sorry. I usually try to avoid doing that.

So I'm quickly making the transition from MS Paint to Graphics Gale now that I intend on doing freelance work. Although I still find the very basic functions quicker and easier in Paint, I really like all the features in Gale.

Anyway, I know people didn't give any criticisms on either of these two pieces before but I've got a couple of updated pics to post:

1) My golem has been given a bit of lighting from underneath. It was something I'd wanted to add for a while, although I had a hard time deciding on the colour.
2) My "Slingjaw" has been fixed. I changed the colours of the body and fixed the armour up (It didn't look metallic enough to me before).

So... yeah. Any more crits and comments on anything up until thins point would be much appreciated.

Oh, and one more thing: how do you change the pen in Graphics Gale? The "help" menu isn't being much help in that department. Somehow I loaded a new set of pens by accident and I can't seem to get the old ones back.
