Independence Day:

"Downloading virus" to the mothership.

UPLOADING, for heaven's sake! UPLOADING!

I think that is the lesser problem in the logic here. Hacking an alien OS would prolly be like attempting to hack a modern PC with a NES or something.
Always the most irritating part of an otherwise pretty good movie to me.

I think another one of those big Hollywood computer problems is the way that they always make those beeping noises whenever text scrolls up the screen. That would get really irritating really quickly in really life.

The first (and maybe only) one of these games that I ever played was Double Dungeons for the TG16. It wasn't such a great game by any stretch of the imagination, but it also did the smooth-scrolling thing Lee N was talking about. I actually had a hunch as to how the spriting is done because you could see bands in between the wall images of different depths. You can sort of see them in this picture:

(Excuse the jpeg)

Like a bunch of concentric boxes. There wasn't much work put into making the tiles blend together, especially not the bits of ceiling, but I think that's why it really helps illustrate how it's done.

I love this idea. I'll definitely try to put something good together.

I support this idea. It would be interesting to see how many of us could do a better job than the actual people at Capcom.

Very nice. You are really good with tilesets. I like the rounder style that you've taken with the characters, although I think that you should still include those whitish spikes sticking out of the Mother Brain.

My only other comment/criticism is that I can't figure out what the redish guy in the first pic is. My first guess would be a Reo (those swooping, moth-like things), but they tend to be more yellow and green.

Although I can estimate a few things from these pictures, I actually don't really know anything about C64 restrictions. Would you be able to post/link to something that could enlighten me and anyone else who's curious?

Yeah i have mild colorblindness too. I see some colors stronger than normal and some weaker.

Hmm... Strange.
What do you think it means if you can see all of the numbers in all of the pictures, but the colourblind ones jump out at you first? Mild colourblindness in multiple areas?

Maybe it's just my optimism, but I think that they may be holding back something bigger for later. It just seems like something they would do.
I so called it... sort of. A new Pikmin game was announced a couple of hours ago. It would've been nice if we got some details though.

Anyway, You guys following E3? It seems Nintendo Annoyed a lot of people including their user fan base after their presentation. And wow FFXIII on xbox360 while Sony didn't do bad this time.
I live-streamed all of the console-makers' keynotes and read up on the stuff in between. My impressions:

Microsoft keynote: Not much new stuff, but a pretty nice presentation overall.
Sony keynote: The only Sony console that I own is an old PS2, but their presentation was pretty solid. Some good stuff in there. I liked the way that they did a lot of the presentation with Little Big Planet. I never got a chance to play God of War, but I'm sure that if I did I'd be excited for the new one.
Nintendo keynote: I love Nintendo. Their presentation was... lackluster at best, but some of the stuff looked good (1-to-1 swordfighting with the Wiimote? Yes please). Maybe it's just my optimism, but I think that they may be holding back something bigger for later. It just seems like something they would do. I think that what annoyed everybody was mainly the fact that the "hardcore" title they were showing off was a new Animal Crossing, which most people saw coming anyway.

Overall, it just looks to me like the companies are putting less work into their presentations since E3 was downsized.

Pixel Art / Re: Earthbound Zero revamp project

Here. Some of the original sprites for comparison purposes. There really wasn't much to the fighting dialogue in the original, so he's taking the Mother 2 approach with the character status boxes.

I can't think of any really good crits right now, although doesn't the lamp have some sort of face in the original? Or maybe I'm just reading it wrong. Either way, I definitely prefer yours to the originals, so good work.

I've never actually played earthbound. Not sure what everyone likes about that game, looked too simplistic for my tastes.
You should really try it. I didn't get too far into the original Mother because I don't understand Japanese and Earthbound Zero doesn't work on my emulator, but from what I've played of the sequel, I actually love everything about the game other than the graphics (which seems to me as valid a reason as any for someone to redo them). Earthbound travels between extremes, starting as one of the lightest, happiest RPGs I've played, and ending on (what is, in my opinion) the creepiest final boss of any game of any genre ever. The series broke the RPG mold, getting rid of the swords and dragons in almost all previous RPGs and replacing them with everyday weapons like frying pans and ridiculous enemies like the "New Age Retro Hippie" and the "Bionic Kraken". It has no random battles, which are easily my least favourite part of RPGs, and is just a really endearing game overall. Also, the plot and some of the characters are pretty great, and the game has some really interesting twists. I highly recommend at least giving it a shot.

General Discussion / Re: Megaman 9 with 8-bit graphics

I think that the main reason that I like the idea is because Capcom had the choice of quickly putting one of the old MM games on the Virtual console for some quick money, or doing something new for the folks who'd like to play something that they haven't before. Sure it doesn't take a lot of effort, but it's more effort then Capcom had to put out and plenty of people would rather play some new levels instead of the same ones over again.

That said, I just read a few minutes ago that Capcom has decided to price the game at 1000 Wii points (that's about $10 in most places). I guess that it seems fairly reasonable. For comparison, here are the prices (in Wii points, as I remember them) set for old games re-released on the VC.

NES: 400
GENESIS: 600
TG16: 600
SNES: 800
NEO-GEO: 900
N64: 1000

What do you think?
