« on: December 23, 2009, 03:11:42 am »
After about a weeks worth, worked like a dog last night till 7:00 a.m. this morning,  to send mine in; only to realize that I (for some reason) thought the due date was today. All's well, though. I just hope people who signed up can finish, despite their busy schedules. Hate seeing people work hard for some else's Secret Santa, only to see that they got nothing in return...kinda' a crappy deal.

Tis the season to be giving. SO GIVE FASTER, SLACKERS!!

I see your original confusing post has been conveniently edited for us to understand better...The first time I read it, I assumed it was for a real job, and that you didn't have the capacity to draw a horse correctly.

Edit: looks like Ptoing beat me to the punch...any hoo, welcome to pixelation, haven't really seen you around before, Tets...

I know most of you guys might not be into fps stuff but holy shit I need this thing like NOW!

Neat design and concept, though I don't think it will be very successful, what with additional "artificial" weight/force possibly causing more of a chance of cramping and joint issues...

General Discussion / Re: Board activity
« on: November 20, 2009, 09:09:34 am »
Maybe pixel art itself is dying. What will we do then

Nothing lasts forever; just be glad to be part of something magnificent when it was around. I know your comment was made tongue in cheek, but I think this sentiment is a facet all humans or creatures should learn to accept. To keep something, or want to stay something forever, is a bit selfish.
Of course when many of us joined back in the day, we were teens, or young adolescents, still learning in the fields of pixel art, and art basics. Yet most of this tight knit community has grown over the years to other facets of the field of art, or have taken part in professional pixel art jobs, leaving most limited time to be more active on the "pixel for fun" part of our schedule.
Yes, there is a bit of a recession on this board as of late as well, but in any social group, this is to be expected. Things fluctuate over time naturally, to adjust to given environment. A lot of the artists submitting their art for assistance and critique in the pixel art thread currently, are admittingly a bit of lower quality then we're used to; but that's because our tight knit community is getting older, and moving on. And the younger bunch entering the boards now are at the period we were in when Pixelation was in it's hay-day; young, a bit ignorant in some of the facets of great pixel art, trying to adjust to user response by putting egos aside, and of course, still learning the basic general principles of art in general as well.
In a twisted way, this also relates to the subject at hand. We're doing a service for pixel art by keeping it alive and passing it on to the next generation of people. Once some of these newer users get the hang of things, they'll start coming into their own and developing friendships along the way, with budding back-and-forth critiques to help themselves get better(along with some seasoned/pruned vets wisdom as well :) ). And once these groups get better acquainted, so begins the rise of more user activity. So passing the torch, so to speak, is really what's happening at this time.
And if it dies, it dies. There really isn't much to say about that. The main goal, for me at least, is education of the form; and that's what places like this serve.

Challenges & Activities / Re: Random Challenge!

No more love for the Random Challenge? You bastards should be ashamed of yourselves...

Behold, King Loo'ey!;

I've been working on this stupid thing for about a month, since this challenge came out, and decided I wanted to be done with it, so I rushed the crap outta' it today. You can tell the parts I rushed, and the parts I spent most time on. I would have spent more time on the rest, but I got tired of dealing with this thing.
Any hoo, yes, that is a cloud of flatulence underneath him, yes the perspective is F'd(per the norm with most my stuff), yes some bits look out of detail in comparison to other parts, and yes, it's a giant toilet(loo) with teeth... ;D

Moar submishuns pleez!

General Discussion / Re: A question on "Style"
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:24:02 pm »

It's a real tricky one. I remember coming out of animation college and going to interviews and being told that they weren't to sure what to do with me. Whether to put in me in 2D, Traditional 3D or computer 3D. Which would then transpire to "Your work is more disney" or "Your work is more Manga" to "Aahhh, so you do experimental animation...".

I suppose the most important thing is whether you feel you are improving or not. If your constantly changing styles and approach, it can be tricky to evaluate. (although I think I may have improved on using colours somewhat...)

Well, I believe that issue is a bit more identifiable. As artists, most of us exhibit a bit of pride where we don't want to be identified with another artist or his style, and that we want to be something new...better, different. However, most of the time a business layman's train of thought is to organize, organize, organize. He/she must find a way to better organize certain artists together to run their job more efficiently, while keeping the main style of the project consistent for the client. In business, money and the customer come first with requests, and it's the business's job to respect and adhere to the wants of that client upon contractual agreement(...at least in my experience)
I've always liked this subject of style, as I feel it's just the human fingerprint on canvas(digital, or traditional). I think in scientific terms, it's just a matter of "monkey see, monkey do." It's what certain pack/clan animals do to survive along with their peers by learning new things, and techniques for more efficient results, as well as achieve alpha status eventually(there's that pride thing again, : )... )
But as a unique set of chromosomes, genes, culture, and how different our individual minds are from each other, many things can help influence the way we see things differently. In my case, when I first began, I tried to make my pixel art alongside the likes of the previously popular Capcom pixel artists....what came out was a disfigured mess, with hardly any distinguishable features that would match Capcom's style. Never the less, this brought comments to the surface with " I've never seen this scratchy style of pixel art before...".

Which raises an interesting question, in my opinion at least: Is style something that is brought on through time as a technique that was initially considered a FLAW, but through time becomes more widely accepted? Would Picasso(his later more identifiable abstract works) had been as successful, had he been born at the beginning of the Renaissance in the 12th, 14th, or 17th century, where it was important to display proper perspective? I'm not one to mix technique with style, but to me, it's an interesting debate...

Oh well, my 2 cents.

PS, Stickman, when I see your art submitted in the Pixel Joint queue, I can tell it is yours, without even looking at the name. Same goes for majority of active users on this site. And I mean that in a respectful manner, not a shameful manner. No one should ever be ashamed of their style when drawing, flaws or not...it's what makes you, YOU, Snowflakes...

Yes, I just noticed it now, that it's only cropping off where changes made to the 2nd frame are at( I believe I've seen this happen in Photoshop one time as well, but not to the point where I can keep recreating the problem, like with Promotion). If no changes are made to the 2nd frame, then it nearly chops/crops out the whole piece. Hopefully, Mr. Zimmerman may have some type of explanation or a quick patch update, that MAY fix it. I know it's an issue that can be bypassed, but it's still a slight annoyance.

Oh well, at least this could be a good "known issues" log for pixelation users using Pro Motion, heh...

I use Promotion V5.1. I was actually able to save it as a ".bmp" file and the 2 frame animation worked just fine. So it must be something with the .gif file type, it doesn't like with 2 frame animations. In either case, I'm going to see if I can email Promotion author, Jan Zimmermann, over the issue. Hopefully he might have a simple solution to this.

Thanks though, Pee-Toe!

I'm having a strange problem with Promotion. I wanna' know if someone experienced Promotion users here has ever experienced this; basically, if I try to do a simple 2 frame animation, the 2nd frame ends up being auto cropped/chopped off toward the bottom and right sides AFTER I save it, close it out and reopen it. Doesn't happen if I do 3 frame animations or above. The funny thing is, if I upload that same chopped image, it loads just fine to the web. But if another promotion user saves the file and loads it into his promotion program, than back we go into the chopping issue .
I've tried re-saving as different file names, saving on to the web, and re-saving it onto my pc, and even reworking it in mspaint, and copying and pasting it...NO difference. I'm totally stumped over this...looked online, and can't find any one who has this problem. I verified my crop settings were normal as well. Any one ever experience this?
