Pixel Art / Re: Walking, I think.

As far as walking animations go in older games, Alyssa's (from The Guardian Legend) is hard to top.

I couldn't resist to create an edit.

Too much wiggle?

there's "feminine", then there's "guy in drag overdiong it"

Pixel Art / Re: 3 Hit combo Animation (WIP)
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:18:21 am »
Yeah ok sure I can fly around and spin in mid air in my small room, and then by some miracle remember what I did and than draw it out and animate it.  Yeah ok...  Excuse me if my poses lack interests, I'm not some martial arts master.  I drew what I could remember and could do in real life.  And I still don't think you are understanding that I have to consider more things than just animation.  Such as range, quickness of attack, and whether or not it makes the whole game super easy.  And imagine if I made the forward movement faster than his actual run.(Which is how your animation is)  How stupid would that be?  Players using that combo to get through the level quicker instead of running.  Not even Devil May Cry(short of the lunging stab) has stupid forward movement of that degree in its animations.

Although I value what you say it doesn't make you any less of a dick.  So whatever...

Uhm. Yeah. actually there are a lot of totally valid crits in there. It's not like he's saying "OH GOD ITS TERRIBLE SOMEONE PLEASE GOUGE OUT MY EYES I THINK THIS IS GOING TO KILL ME!" or anything. just stating what he sees wrong with it.

To be 100% honest, you're making a mountain out of a molehill.

The animation *could* use to stand a little bit more in terms of fluidity. it's very *fast* as it is, but unless he's weilding something that's next to weightless it shouldn't neccesarily be that way.. It's good, i'll concede without problem but no matter how good it is, there is always going to be room for improvement. In my opinion he moves in a very jerky way, but that's not anything that couldn't be fixed with just dicking around with the timing and adding a few frames. gives the motion a little bit more "swing"

I added the smiley face on the frames i edited. I also made him descend, since it didn't make much sense to me to have him float there for a second then suddenly jerk up a few frames.

Just swing your arm around a bit. when you make a sudden stop there's a little bit of "give". adding that , at least in my opinion makes it seems less robotic. Momentum.
Yes. I know they're crap. i'm busy doing other things so i can't exactly make this any kind of professional.

Without momentum.

And with momentum. yeah there's like 6 or 7 extra frames in there, but it really does make a world of difference.

Also, I like the earlier versions better ;)

I got back from paganfest last night, and i'm still hurting from it.

The bands that played were all completely awesome.
VIKING METAL!

The opening act Was ELUVEITIE (say it - EL-OH-VAY-TEE):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtdvoKpLevc
Let it be known that they have the goddamn craziest flute player of al time. Everybody in this band is at least 6 feet tall. Even the chick.

Coming directly after them, The more more melodic TYR.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97lxvrKC-nI (Orumun Langi. It's in faroese so don't try to understand it.)
Now everybody in tTHIS band was like Nine feet tall. I exaggerate but they're some huge dudes and would NOT want to have to meet them in a back alley. Anyone who says these guys suck should probably just go jump off a cliff.

Third in the lineup was TURISAS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrQxr-8neyo (BATTLE METAL!)
These guys stole the entire show. The frontman is a real enterainer, and they know how to get the crowd to move.
Plus to go up on stage in war paint and leather and fur armor which is ten kinds of awesome.
Unlike the previous two bands these folks were actually kind of tiny and it was great.

THe Headlining act - ENSIFERUM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs8giIGt1jE
At this point i was pretty well smashed. NOt alcohol, but after three hours of vikings smashing your face in, ensiferum was almost too much for me.
Back with the giant norsemen. The lead singer, i swear does not age. he looked like an overgrown 15 year old boy.

I still hurt from the experience. I did get to see some pretentious scenester type kid git his ass beat by a bunch of beardly monsters in a mosh pit that had formed. Sorry, but you don't try to be fashionable in an environment that is populated by overweight muscleheads with a norse fixation. you're pretty much asking to be tossed unceremoniously about, and you ESPECIALLY don't try to do the OMG HARDK0R3" bullshit dnacing when everyone is out for blood. it's just foolish. But he got what he had comin'.

I just listened to the self-titled Woven Hand today. Pretty cool stuff!
Good to know at least somebody is listening to my prattling on :)

General Discussion / Re: Which jung personality type are you?
« on: May 17, 2008, 02:05:28 pm »
Your personality type is ISTP.
Introverted (I) 61%    Extraverted (E) 39%
Sensing (S) 59%    Intuitive (N) 41%
Thinking (T) 70%    Feeling (F) 30%
Perceiving (P) 73%    Judging (J) 27%

I read the longer descriptions and it was spot-on for the most part.

What's interesting about these tests is that your type changes over time. I went from INTP to INTJ to the current ISTP over the course of a few years. I wouldn't look at these types as a set-in-stone sort of thing; more of a 'snapshot' of your character.

That's very true, as i used to be, what seems to be one of the many INTP types here, and before that i was more of an INTJ. In other words I want in the total opposite direction as you :)

I'm too lazy to edit but you have to remember - wood has texture. Here's a real plank of wood to provide a visual aid:

Remember that an eyebrow isn't a big solid chunk, it's a mess of hair. I can see the attempt at texture but - and i mean no offense but it's textured like feces would be :\

Try using a bunch of smaller strokes to get the idea taht your'e looking a t a collecton of hundreds of tiny, fine hairs.

And generally, an eyebrow will have a smoother outline.

This post will be long. I love my music and i have a lot of free time at the moment i should probably be using to improve my pixeling skeelz..but blargh. not feeling particularly artistic at the moment.

I see there's a lot of actual real honest-to-god metal floating around here:
This makes me very happy.
Now stuff that could be classified as metal in no particular order:

Let's just go ahead and get the METAL (I freely admit, it's *mostly* power metal.)  out of the way here, so you folks not interested in that can just scroll on down.

IRON MAIDEN - IF I actually need to describe or paraphrse this band, then you really ought to just crawl on out of that rock you've     been hiding under for the past 30 some odd years. Oh, and up the irons and such.
Standout albums:
Killers
Number of the beast
Powerslave
Dance of death (Shut up. this album kicks.)

DIO - Yes. I actually like Dio and in a completely unironic manner. Hold thy conugons high, my diminutive friend...
Standout Albums:
Holy Diver (how can anyone argue this isn't a classic?)
Last In Line
Killing the Dragon

RIOT - Riot Is a difficult band to categorize, simply because they've changed so much over the years. They were without a doubt one of the hardest rocking American bands to come out of the late 70's. Their album "rock city" is probably one of the most underappreciated of what i call "precursor metal" albums. Fast forward a few years and two vocalists. They produce and release the album "thundersteel" Which is, to simply put it - Fucking awesome.
Standout albums
Rock City
Narita
Thundersteel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6MD0W57QaA "FIght of fall"
the Privilidge of Power

AMON AMARTH - Vikings. Murder. Pillage. 8 foot tall swedes. Grunting, Blasphemy. Blazing fast guitars and double bass. The distilled essence of pagan rage!
Standouts:
With oden on our side
The Avenger

BLIND GUARDIAN - How do I love thee? Take queen; add metal. Well for the latter stuff anyway. BG's eary stuff is mostly run-of-the-mill speed metl, but instead of bein about satan it's about hobbits and tommyknockers.
The good:
A Night At the Opera
Imaginations From the Other Side
NIghtfall in Middle Earth (Because, dammit.)

ICED EARTH - I got into these guys way too late. I get to see them in september with the full glory of matt barlowe! Not much to say here, Other than "1776 is quite possibly the most epic metal instrumental of all time."
The Awesome:
Something wicked This Way Comes
Burnt Offerings
The Dark Saga
yeha. I pretty much hate tim "R1PP3R" owens. no offense.

DEMONS & WIZARDS - Iced earth and blind guardian, though i hear more blind guardian than iced earth here.
The good - Both albums. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXzKKSOzzsk i've been told that  look a *LOT* like john schaeffer in this video.
The bad - there is no bad. Yes, I even liked that "wicked witch" song.

MASTODON - God. Mastodon is brutal and technical There is a grand total of ONE song i don't like by them. (sickleg) The name of the band is very indicative of the sound they produce. It's huge. It's intimidating and it has giant tusks. But it's not a stomp-a-thon, in that it's surprisingly intelligent music. They're also from atlanta, which is where I hail from.
Good - Pretty much everything. ESPECIALLY blood mountain. good lord. it's a masterpeice. I don't know how they're going to top it.

MOTORHEAD - This really needs no explanation. motorhead has been rocking hard for 40 some odd years now and seems to show no signs of stopping. I hate to reccomend it though, but you're much better off getting a best-of compilation than attempting to collect thier catalogue because..well. they haven't changed much over the years. Normally this bothers me, but they found a formula that works without getting into ac/dc levels of reptitiveness. Maybe it's because the albums are over before you realize it.
STANDOUTS:
Ace of Spades
(self titled)
Iron Fist
Bastards - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyPRjf9Drh4

PANTERA - Okay, i'll openly admit that i actually prefer their glam stuff (1st 4 albums) over anything after that. With that being said, taky my opinions with a large grain of salt.
GET:
Power Metal
Metal Magic (And i *WISH* i were lying here...)
Cowboys From Hell

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM - I'm not sure if this counts as metal. I haven't gotten  *too* deep into this band's cataloge, as I only Have two albums by them. So i'll not offer any reccomendations other than this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELyco68w5ks
The album "in Glorious Times" has quite a bit of "red" and "larks tongue in aspic" era King Crimson influence that should be apparent aside from the vocals. Not a bad thing at all.

TYR - more viking stuff. this is much more folk oriented and takes a lot of direct inflience from faroese folk music. They've been called "Progressive folk" but there's some metal there too.
Best album: Ragnarok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97lxvrKC-nI

THE SWORD - Think black sabbath on steroids, Or a really fast version of Sleep. And since sleep wrote such slow paced music, The sword's stuff is still on the slower side of thing. The album "age of winters" is better than "gods of the earth" many times over, but the latter is by no means a bad album. It lacks the Bone-crushing quality of the first, however.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOT METAL!

16 HORSEPOWER/WOVEN HAND - They're often called "gothabilly" but that's not quite right. 16 HP takes more american folk influence, and infueses it with a very dark spirituality. Woven hand is much more gloomy and experimental. In either case i've enver heard anything like them. If you ever get the opportunity to see woven hand live, do so. Edwards has a gigantic stage presence.
16 HP - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THlgU-8dMYg "american Wheeze" and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO9My5_H6dg "black soul Choir"
WH - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shMF6ALAKZY "winer Shaker" (excuse the crappy video.)
I cannot reccomend these bands enough. i really can't.

ALICE IN CHAINS- Let it be known that i love early 90's seattle stuff. Some call it grunge but i call them stupid. Alice in chains is awesome.
BEST ALBUMS: Facelift, Jar of Flies

BORIS - Boris is impossible to categorize. They're a Japanese band that does mostly Drone and doom, But also branch out into noisy punklike rock songs that rock your nuts off, to nick-drake esque material. I don't speak japanese, so obviously the lyrical content is lost on me. This is actualy about the only japanese band i like right now. I have no idea why this is particularly.
BEST ALBUM FOR BALLS TO THE WALL RAWK: Heavy Rocks
BEST ALBUM FOR ATMOSPHEREIC NOISE: The Thing Which Solomon Overlooked Pt. 2

BUDGIE - I almost posted this in metal due to how raw, hard and influential their 1971 self titled album is. Metallica (the asshats they are) did a coer of Budgie's song "breadfan". you're more likely to have heard metallicas less-than-stellar version.

CANDLEMASS - YOU ARE BEEWWIIIIITCHED! Best album IMO is Tales of creation, with king of the grey isles trailing a close second.
It's Doom. Stright up. And occasionally a messiac marcolin.

CLUTCH - I don't even know what to say here. Clutch is one of the best bands of all time. Tons of energy, absolutely brillaint songwriting and influences from all over the board. If you don't know clutch youdon't know jack. Very talented musicians and just about the only band that actually causes me to want to get up and shake my ass. The best description i can give a a funk/blues sort of job, except with a distinct redneckish charm, but written by university of maryland graduates.
BEst album: Robot hive/exodus

Anyways i'm too tired to keep going and this post is way too long as it is. I hope it proves useful for somebody maybe looking for something new.

But yeah. I've got like 50 gigs of music that i listen to pretty regularly, so if anyone's interested in sharing, feel free to hit me up.

Idle

This is the one that bugged me the most. His face seemingly moves independently of his head and hair. Reduce the lateral facial feature movement, or increase the motion of the hair. Since it's an idle stance, it's probably a good idea to keep it a little less busy (unless of course you're going for the fast paced techno-beat thing, if that makes any sense)

nimations don't pay much heed to the joint structure (which in itself is unrealistic).

That's what I was trying to say here, but i don't think he wants to listen. Even if the wings are entirely alien in structure they still have to make some sort of sense, or else they're going to look wrong.
Which is why I take no issue with the first two (other than the second one being bent at an unpleasant lookin angle, which is easy to fix.) but the thrid one just looks bad to me.

I'm not trying to be extra harsh or anything, bu the plain truth of it is, the third form's wings don't even look like a logical progression from the first two, and the outmost 'bones',while being well shaded and correctly colord, aren't shaped in a very visually pleasing manner.

Quote
Think of them more as tentacles then joints.

then have them behave as tentacles rather than joints! I see you kinda started doing that with the most recent animation, but only on the innermost 'tentacles, it would make sense if a similar motion were to be added to other others but i don't see it happening there.

And yes; add more frames. just one or two would be enough.

there's no point in getting C&C if you're not going to yield to any of it.
