General Discussion / Re: Read the Rules, then introduce yourself here.
« on: August 04, 2010, 02:22:20 am »
Greetings!
My name is Derek and I have been creating pixel art since I got a Gateway computer (ewww)   in '97. My motivation back then was to make fake buttons and false icons on the desktop to confuse my parents.  ;)

Since then, I have been developing games in programs that require no scripting as I have yet to take a class in any programming languages.
My best success would probably be my remake of the elderly but amazing game "Chip's Challenge". A video walk-through of the first four levels is found here, but unfortunately it is not yet available for download.

I have been intermittently visiting this site since late 2007 or early 2008, but I intend to start participating here more and doing much more pixel art.
In advance, it's a pleasure to meet everyone.  ;D

Pixel Art / Re: RPG-Type Sprites
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:34:44 pm »
It's looking good. I think that the instinct to smooth out the animation over more frames might be betraying you...
It's slowing down the attack substantially. I'd consider reducing the attacking portion to two frames; just 1 for prep and 1 for the actual swing.

...I'm also concerned about the direction of the swing. The topdown frontal slash itself seems to throw the character out of balance. All the games I can find for resources implement the slash animation horizontally. This does two things:
1. It extends your attacks reach a little farther.
2. Your knife's animation ends very close to where it starts.

Just my two cents.  :P

Well the surface of the ground looks a lot more illuminated than the lower parts, which I think is an improvement. The quicker the drop off, the more decisive the ground line looks and the less distracting the rocks underneath are. It emphasizes the parts important to play.

Is it safe to assume the character is going to run on the red line across/through the ground tiles?

Pixel Art / [WIP][Newbie] Kid Chameleon Remake - Sprite Work
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:42:09 pm »
Greetings pixelated community.

I have recently obtained and begun to try my hand at multimedia fusion 2, and now that I have my own means to create games, making sprites has become a priority.
My inspiration for this project comes from Kid Chameleon for the Sega Genesis among several other games. For those who haven't played it, helmets are picked up to change your character. For instance, a hockey mask changes you into a psycho wielding an axe. Understandably, I have a lot of work ahead of me if I am going to be creating 6+ characters all with independent animations, just for the hero. If anyone is interested in collaborating, pixel art or programming, just hit me up.

I plan to start posting my own graphics shortly; Suggestions and critiques will always be welcome.

Pixel Art / Re: [newbie] Bench Pixel 96x48

Ludamad, I would recommend adding a little more contrast to imply a light source. (your link shows an environment with the light source from the upper right). This should also help define the shape of the bench.
It also occurred to me that the back legs are not visible but appear as if they should be. This could be a great opportunity to define the depth with contrast.
Good luck with your game. :)

Yeah, I definitely see what you guys mean. I admit I started off trying for a shooting pose but it is closer to idle.  :(
I will try to make both an idle and shooting pose from this and post them shortly. Thanks a lot guys.  ;D

Alright I think I fixed it... I ended up shortening his legs too.
Does this look better?

I realize the image is rather large but I can always shrink it more gracefully than expand. More than likely It will be half this size when I use it.  :)

Alright, including white, this should be 24 different colors for the whole thing. I need to go to work though so I'm posting my progress. It does make it much easier to work with.

Thanks, it's all fixed. I just noticed photobucket convert .bmp's to .jpg or something. :-\

Pixel Art / [WIP][NEWBIE] Modern Soldier

Greetings. I'm a new poster, but I have visited this site several times thus far and I wished I discovered it sooner.

Comments and Critiques are always welcome and more than likely needed. My latest pixel project is for a 2-D screen scroller game my brother and I are constructing.

This first image is the standing position of the soldier character, with a parallel image in a larger spectrum of color to reveal, the pixel changes. To create a stylized fabric effect, I started with the main shadows and added little variation afterwards.

This is a screen shot, not to be ripped from, but to demonstrate the inspiration for this a character:

I know I already got pretty far with this but even changes that require complete do-overs is good. (like I said I found this place a little late) Please tell me what you think. Thanks.  :)
