Should be out this Fall. And we learned a LOT between X-Men and this one. The difference in control, playability, levels, etc. is pretty drastic.

Hey guys,

The developer I work for (WayForward Technologies, creators of Shantae & Sigma Star Saga) is always on the lookout for new talent. Our last two contests (animation and pixelling) went over incredibly well. So we're going to do at least one more contest if the mods here don't mind. If everything looks fine, maybe one of the mods can move this topic to the challenges section. Our last contest carried a $250 prize. But I always feel guilty completely dissing whoever's in second place. So this time we're going to award first place $150, second place $100 and third place $50. Sound good? This contest focuses on that other side of game pixelling  - background tiling.

Below is a map from Double Dragon II on NES.



And here is a random photo of a city street.



To enter this contest, the artist has to complete only one task:

Create a background in the same perspective as the Double Dragon map above, adapting elements, color themes and details from the above photo (basically, making a game background of the scene in that photo). Your final image must be 240 pixels wide by 160 pixels tall (GBA res). You will be tiling in 16x16 squares (so 10 tiles tall by 15 tiles wide). Each tile can have a maximum of 15 colors in it (this is one 'pallette row'). The scene can have a maximum of 10 different pallette rows across all tiles. A GBA screen has 150 tiles in it (10x15). Your scene can use a MAXIMUM of 40 unique tiles. You can flip any of these tiles horizontally and it won't count as an extra tile (although a vertical flip will). If any of this is violated, you cannot place in the contest. If I notice any errors, I'll try to point them out so you have time to fix them. (This is all pretty complicated, so please post questions below, although we're not going to explain the basics of what tiling is here. This contest is for the familiar).

The winning entry will be the background that looks impressive visually, showcases strong pixelling ability, pulls essential detail from the photo and creates the most fully-realized game world.


Additional rules:

1) No animation whatsoever is allowed (single-frame only).

2) All pieces of art must be posted in this thread and be accessible (no dead links) for consideration. You can post the file in any web-displayable image (gif preferred). If it doesn't show up for the judges, the art won't be considered.
3) No previously-created art may be used in this contest.
4) Multiple entries are allowed. If you end up pixelling multiple backgrounds, we'll consider all of them.

So that's it in a nutshell. Create a background, post it below, best three entries with regard to the rules above and according to WF's directors win the cash. Post below and feel free to comment on everyone else's posts.

Deadline:

The deadline will be in a little over 2 weeks (March 17th). No extensions on this one (I feel like when we do that, we're punishing those who rushed to get their entry in on time).

Prize:

The winner will receive $150. Second place will receive $100 and third place will receive $50.

FAQ:
(I'll add to this as people post below)

1) Can we enter if we're under age? Of course. Again, just a contest. Unless you know of a specific reason why you might not be allowed to enter, the contest is open to everyone.
2) Can I post my sprite entries on my website? Of course. Post away.
3) Can mods submit? Of course. The contest is open to everyone except WayForward employees.
4) Can we submit collabs? Nope, sorry. One artist per entry.
5) Can I put sprites and HUD over my background to show how it would work? Yes, however you must have a 'naked' image too, with just the background by itself. Failure to supply this will result in non-consideration.
6) Can we flip tiles? Yup, as newly stated above, you can horitonally flip tiles without adding to your tile count. A vertical flip will add a new tile to the total, though.
7) So we're keeping the same details and perspective as the photo? No no no. I mean, you can, but you're meant to be looking at the photo mainly for some key details (not everything) and colors. I'd reccommend making the perspective the same as the Double Dragon maps. Anything else and you're gonna run out of tiles fast.

Hey guys,

The developer I work for (WayForward Technologies, creators of Shantae & Sigma Star Saga) is always on the lookout for new animation talent. Our last contest (animation) went over incredibly well (we picked up around 3 freelance animators). So we're going to do a few more contests if the mods here don't mind. I discussed it with Alex a bit so if everything looks fine, maybe one of the mods can move this topic to the challenges section. Each contest carries a $250 prize (judged by the WF staff). The first of the two contests is something everyone here should love - sprite modelling.

Below is Popeye. We're not doing a Popeye game, but he's a very recognizable and well-defined character.



To enter this contest, the artist has to complete two tasks:

1. Make a usable sprite of Popeye, with 15 colors (or less) 48x48 pixels in size (or less). Character should be in an idle pose, any style and perspective. Sprite will be judged on pixelling ability, color choice, detail, pose (hint: Don't copy the one above) and generally how well the Popeye character is transformed into pixel art.

2. Make a usable sprite of Popeye (again, 15 colors and 48x48 or less), this time in the same style, size and perspective as the sprites in the game Boktai (see example below). This sprite will be judged on essentially the same criteria, but with more of an emphasis on matching the style of that game.

Rules:

1) Each entrant must pixel both a free-style Popeye sprite and a Popeye sprite in the Boktai style/size/perspective.
The idea behind requiring both is to test the artist's raw creativity and also their ability to work to a specific, pre-defined style.
2) Each sprite must not exceed a 48x48 size.
3) Each sprite can have a maximum of 15 colors (15 colors + 1 color BG or transparency).
4) If rules 2 or 3 are violated, and if there's time, the entrant has the option to correct either error and resubmit.

5) Is it 16 colors per sprite or for both? 16 colors each (15 + transparency. Transparency color isn't allowed to be used as a color, too, so 15 in your sorite).
6) What do you mean by Boktai size & perspective? There are a lot of different sprites in Boktai. Intepret that as you want. You are only limited to the rules and words I've posted in this contest, however I chose the Boktai pic above based on how it typifies that style and size, so your chances will be better if the sprite is similar to that specific sprite in style, size and perspective.

For those who didn't know, Derek Yu did the cover art for last month's Game Developer magazine (as well as some interior art). It's always nice to see the old Pixelation crew popping up in pro gigs. Congrats, man! :)

I'm currently employed as a designer/director for GBA & DS at WayForward Technologies. But I still love freelancing, especially on fun projects. I am looking specifically for work doing either design (writing, docs, game design) or animation (2D or 3D). I've worked on around 30 published titles so far. My resume' can be viewed here:

Hey guys,

The developer I work for (WayForward Technologies, creators of Shantae & Sigma Star Saga) is always on the lookout for new animation talent. I suggested that a contest is a great way to get the best samples out of people (remember our 144-entry FSc contest a few years back?), and they were in agreement. So we're running a fun little contest.

Rules:

1) Each entrant must pixel animate both a walk cycle and a dance animation off the Shantae model below (in the red box).
The idea behind requiring both is that looping, weight-driven animations (the walk) and more creative animations (the dance) are two pretty different beasts. Any entrant who creates only one of the animations will not be considered.
2) Both animations must not exceed a 64x64 size.
3) Both animations must not add any colors not already in the original Shantae model. You can actually pull from any colors in the below model sheet, but you can't add any new ones.
4) If rules 2 or 3 are violated, and if there's time, the entrant has the option to correct either error and resubmit.
5) All pieces of art must be posted in this thread and be accessible (no dead links) for consideration. You can either post the file as a web-displayed image (animated gif) or just link to the file for download (flc).
6) All pieces must be in either animated gif or flc file format. If there's another format you'd like to suggest, please do so below.
7) No previously-created art may be used aside from the reference art below. You may feel free to take pieces of the poses below if you need to, but the more original your animation is the better it will likely be received.
8 ) Multiple entries are allowed. If you end up animating 3 dances and 2 walk cycles, we'll consider all of them.

So that's it in a nutshell. Work from the idle pose below (inside the red box), do a looping walk or run animation and a dance animation of your own creation (can be looping or single-action). Post below and feel free to comment on everyone else's posts.

Deadline:

The initial deadline will be in 2 1/2 weeks (October 28th). If response from the contest hasn't dwindled by then, it might be extended an additional two weeks.

Prize:

The winner will receive $250 and a copy of Pro Motion Lite (the best pixel animation program available, in my opinion).

FAQ:
(I'll add to this as people post below)

1) Can we enter if we don't want a job? Absolutely. This is just a contest. Create the best entries (as judged by our company's animators) and win $250 + Pro Motion. There is no obligation and conversely, there's no obligation on the part of WayForward to offer anyone work. The $250 prize is guaranteed regardless, though.
2) Can we enter if we're under age? Of course. Again, just a contest. Unless you know of a specific reason why you might not be allowed to enter, the contest is open to everyone.
3) Will you be using my animations in some game? Nope. This is just a contest. This is an opportunity for us to see what's out there in animation talent. We're not actually using these entries for anything.
4) Can I post my animations on my website? Of course. Post away.
5) What's the limit on frame count? There isn't one. You can make a dance that's 4 frames or 40. A recommended length for the walk or run cycle is between 6 and 12 frames. Anything past twelve will probably be too slow, but it's really all up to you.
6) Can mods submit? Of course. The contest is open to everyone except WayForward employees.
7) Do we render them out like the reference art or keep them simple like the GBC animations? Work in the style of the model sheet below. The GBC animations are just to get you inspired with some dance examples.

Hey guys,

I realize I left the forum (and in a huff) but the development house I work for would like to host a pixel animation contest, and there really isn't any better place than here for something like that. The basic idea is that we post a sprite and entrants each do a run/walk cycle and a dance animation of that sprite. The entrant with the best combination of both receives $250 and a copy of Pro Motion Lite 5.1 (the industry-standard animation & pixelling program).

The reasoning behind the contest is that WayForward Technologies is always on the lookout for new animators, and a contest is the perfect place for people to show off their abilities. Obviously employment is not guaranteed, hence the prize. Considering the fiasco that the last contest I hosted on Pixelation was, however, I'd like to get the current mods' thoughts on this before I post anything. This is not my forum, and I'd be happy to defer to the wishes of the mods on how we can set a contest up, what rules would be fair, and so on. I'd also understand if the mods would rather I never bring another contest around here, and leave it at that. But I think this could be a lot of fun and a great opportunity for some people to get their feet in the industry door.

So, thoughts?
