After many years the game is finally out. Congrats to everyone that worked on it, including the following Pixelation alumni:

Director: Sals (me)
Sprites: Jawsh, Gustav
Animation: Konjak, Paul Robertson
Interface: Panda
Backgrounds: Helm, Ptoing, Vedsten

I know everyone loves Henk, and I'm a huge Boktai fan. Anyone else got any links to beautiful-looking pixel background artwork, hobby or professional? I've been trying to study BG pixel composition and tiling lately.

Anything that shows off just tons and tons of nice pixel art reference from games.

General Discussion / Pixel contest at IGN

Check it out. A buddy of mine at another company directed the game. When you're zoomed in all the way though, you can pixel pretty precisely so I'm sure some of the folks here could whip up amazing pieces, especially given the prizes.

General Discussion / Hey, what happened to Pep?

Simple question. :) For me:

Professionally: Working on some original IP (non-licensed) games for work. Non-commercially, doing some design/art for a retro platform (ie, Atari 2600 or NES).
Artistically: My pixelling skills have gone to crap, but I'd like to improve my animation skills a bit (2D and 3D).

General Discussion / Lego pixel art
« on: February 11, 2007, 06:48:51 am »
Has anyone posted this yet? I was at the store tonight and saw that Legos has a new line called 'Mosaic'. Basically they give you a flat panel and a ton of pieces, and instructions on how to create a flat image. The result is more or less pixel art. It's interesting to see the sensibilities of this art style applied to something as universal as Legos.

See?

Seems kind of unconventional pixelling/design for a game in 1985. Thoughts?

A co-worker of mine got this from a publisher for X-Mas and I instantly recognized Gary's (Army of Trolls) sprites on the cover. The book is really amazing - it's a broad overview of pixelling, focusing on a number of aspects of the artform, and showcases folks like Gary, Henk, Tsugumo and many other familiar names.

Here's the odd thing - the book's supposed to be $30 and it's only $5 at Barnes & Noble.    :o

I have to assume this is some kind of pricing error, but since I had a $25 gift card I went ahead and ordered 5 copies for our office. Anyone looking for a great little miscellanea on pixelling should definitely pick this one up.

General Discussion / Is pixelling as art dead in games?
« on: November 06, 2006, 08:04:29 am »
Pixelling is pretty much dead in gaming outside of mobile and handheld Nintendo systems, and it just seems like so much of that is awful. There's the occasional Boktai, but most handheld games seem really cobbled together in terms of art design; even if the individual aspects look okay (animation, BGs, models, HUD), it's rare to find a pixel game with cohesive art direction, where every piece compliments the rest.

Are we over the hill in terms of great pixelling in games? Will it ever hit the creative height it did in PC games decades ago? Have you seen or played anything with art that really blew you away? Have you seen/played anything recently that surprised you in how awful it looked? And what are your feelings on the subject in general? Wherever possible, try to support your thoughts with examples and images from games below.
