that may be the case but it was a seminal piece of technology that a great deal of pros cut there teeth on.

yes you're right yellow is a good choice for underwater colors... that said that beautiful turtle picture with the butterfly fish has a local light source, so the yellows are extrememly vibrant... in reality they'd be tinged with blue - and don't forget the color absorbancy is dependant on depth.

The latest effort is terrific.

it's amazing how far off topic this thread has got... I might rename the "let's discuss Japanese popular comic book art and animation Thread"

Incidentally... I spoke to the chap in question when I orginally posted this... and, well... he was grateful for the advice but begged to differ on his principles... he's attempting to create a sprite within a game, that use a squillion frames played at 30fps that moves smoothly from any sequence to any sequence - fair enough if the whole things vector based... but I think there's gonna be a hellluva lot of frames if it's gonna be hard coded...

ho hum... I wish him the best of luck. If it weren't for people pushing hte boundaries then we'd never get anywhere if old farts like me keep people back so fair play to him...

As for anime... I STILL love Akira (even though it confuses the hell out of me), Ghost in the Shell (the first one) can't fault it, Bubblegum crisis still resonates for me, Spirited away (magical, whimical, lovely), Princess Mononoke (for the same reasons) and most of the other gibli stuff... I've grown out of the majority of the other stuff... having had to do a beyblades game, and done games specs for yu yu hakashu and yu gi oh and various other anime/anime inspired kids cartoon/merchandising/game carrying 'adverts' I have to say I'm with Helm... there are the exceptions and I can't fault the classics but for the most part it's derivative shite used to sell cards, toys, figures and shamefully video games... welcome to the 21st century media merchandising machine.

it depended on whether or not you had interesting backgrounds... if it was something graphically and technically 'simple' like say
manic miner

-or-
jet set willy

...then no, as it was set against a prodominantly balck b/g and it used pixel collision, but with something like, say...

Renegade

-or-
knight lore

-or-
head over heels

Then you'd definatley use a pixel mask...

Towards the tail end of game development on the zx we tended to use masks as par for the course regardless...

Incidentally, for those of you that don't know what a pixel mask is its where you'd have a repeated version of the sprite as a silhoetted version kept in memory, sometimes (usually) 1 pixel bigger than your sprite... this version of the sprite is printed to screen first to (effectively) CUT OUT a section of the screen where the actual 'detailed' version of the sprites is then placed. The use of which is obvious when you look at the screens I've shown above... in case it's not obivous, it so that in games like knight lore, head over heels etc, any details in the background don't merge with the sprite creating an ugly mess of merged pixels...

it's not so much of a problem these days as there are more than 'just' two colors... or 1-bit depth... ON or OFF... I look at things like that assassins creed these days and cry at just how far digital visualisation have come...

As an experienced sub aqua diver I can tell you that RED does not show up underwater past depths of around 2 meters... it's the first color in the spectrum to be absorbed by the water. So that blood would actually be a dark blue... and the brown on the floor... well that would be more cyan of color...

The only way you'd see the true color is if you introduced a nearer light source, like a flashlight for instance.

The visibilty under there is awesome... must be a good 1000meters plus... the best vis I've seen is about 25meters at the Barrier Reef in Oz and that was a LONG way in u/water terms...  presumably your water is super clear with no suspended particles, krill, plankton or debris in it whatsoever? One tends to find a lot of silt on an ocean floor - and where one's feet contact it tends to throw up lots of it in billowing clouds...

Another thing one tends to see at depth is a notion of a visible ceiling... i.e. the under side of the surfce of the water... in your case your submariner looks like he could be miles down... in which case they'd be zero light and you wouldn't see a thing... Having said that you've got shafts of apparent sunlight streaming in so presumably it's not too deep? in which case, perhaps some kind of surface reflection might look interesting.

Ok, maybe I'm being pedantic, but if you were to do only one thing I'd say to ditch the colors... and push the whole image towards blue. And try for that ceiling idea.

Just a thought.

Nice try though.

I see this alot in running animations, but don't you generally run on your toes?  I rarely see run animations like that.

huh? a foot is designed to be rolled from heel to toe... if you run on your toes you've got something seriously wrong with your feet dude!

Is he a dot or is he a speck?
When he's underwater does he get wet?
or does the water get him instead?
Nobody knows.
Particle man.

& on that basis - I think your version of particle man is a tad big...?
or maybe triangle man is too small?
