General Discussion / is it just me...?

... or has the world gone mad?

First bobs game - and now this?

Check out the FAQ - particularly the bit about 2d art...

"How do you draw your textures for 3D games?
I use a little-known program called Painter 5. However, all you really need is a program that has a good "Airbrush" tool. That's how you achieve the realistic shading in things like faces. As for costumes, there are many templates in the bonus material of the CD version...

How do you make the graphics for your 2D games?
They were initially edited from a game called Fire Pro Wrestling. I took a screenshot, cut out the character I wanted, then edited them beyond recognition - using the original graphic as an outline. Nowadays I'm experienced enough to draw the graphics from scratch (in Microsoft Paint) so I've pretty much made the style my own..."

there are single-man dev teams out there that produce commercial games, but they need to be special.  Combat Mission, for instance, was made by one man in a basement, but it had a hybrid turn system gimmick in addition to playable graphics and an assload of realism/historicity that made it worth playing.

...and let's not forget every day shooter on PSN and Braid on XBLA...

@ Takam - I think the term you're looking for is 'predictive scroll' - and the fact it's lacking is one of those elements that proves this is an amateur product - no disrespect to bob, but it's one of those aspects that proves he's not exactly the genius he thinks he is.

@ Shrike - There are aspects of poking fun agreed, but bob could learn a thing or two by being part of a dev team - standing by a nmisguided notion that being able to self code/art/score a product isn't necessarily one to be proud of - 5 years of this guys life has been wasted on what appears to be some kind of post pubescent 'getting back at all those fools who doubted me' fantasy that has culminated in the poor soul being ridiculed and lambasted from all quarters.

Full marks for enthusiasm, drive and passion... zero marks for implementation and approach... it strikes me that a little career guidance has gone amiss along the line - or perhaps (as many have pointed out) that he is in fact bipolar and lacking any judgement of reality... either way it's sad to see.

Just wondering if anyone had ever tried knocking up katakana/hiragana fonts in 8x8's?

General Discussion / Re: Rendering 3d models to 2d sprites

To the OP - Is your friend refering to PRE Rendered art or Rendered on-the-fly?

One of the companies I was producer at, we had a realtime 3d render engine on the GBA which we rendered polygonal information to the sprites in realtime... I don't know if this has been discussed here at all...

it's benefits being that one could rotate the polygonal mesh to any angle giving you limitless positions for your characters to be positioned (great for extreme sports style games [aka: tony hawks/dave mirra]) - plus you could have quite a lot of animation detail with quite a low memory footprint.

it's downsides - limited poly's meant low res characters - which look a bit crap close up but you can jsut about get away with at the res they were rendered at... even so, hand drawn stuff could be much more interesting in terms of detail

Was that a scythe she was holding on the left... ? looks like death to me? and that one on the right... the fool?
