I'm assuming you guys have seen this?

In fact the artwork looks suspiciously familiar... I wouldn't be surprised if someone round here did it... :D

General Discussion / is it just me...?

... or has the world gone mad?

First bobs game - and now this?

Check out the FAQ - particularly the bit about 2d art...

"How do you draw your textures for 3D games?
I use a little-known program called Painter 5. However, all you really need is a program that has a good "Airbrush" tool. That's how you achieve the realistic shading in things like faces. As for costumes, there are many templates in the bonus material of the CD version...

How do you make the graphics for your 2D games?
They were initially edited from a game called Fire Pro Wrestling. I took a screenshot, cut out the character I wanted, then edited them beyond recognition - using the original graphic as an outline. Nowadays I'm experienced enough to draw the graphics from scratch (in Microsoft Paint) so I've pretty much made the style my own..."

Just wondering if anyone had ever tried knocking up katakana/hiragana fonts in 8x8's?

General Discussion / This stuff really pi55es me off...

I was having a look at this thread in the indiegamer forum.

Am I being harsh? Does anyone else rate them?

I've only just joined indiegamer so I can't comment (yet), personally I think the guys barking up the wrong tree... is animation better if it's smooth? It needs to flow, and read, but smooth like the way these are means more memory footprint and slow gameplay...

It has nasty aliasing surround the entire character and is... well - smudgy.

Opinions?

Pixel Art / My first pixels - if you fancy a laugh...
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:58:30 pm »
Feel free to criticize it and rip it pieces... but I just thought I'd post this as I've just found it whilst surfing da web... I've not seen it in years... and well... it made me cringe somewhat.

Gasp in awe at the sheer lack of dithering skillz... be amazed by the distinct disregard for anti-aliasing... not to mention the total lack of anatomical awareness... <sheesh>

oh... it was on the AMSTRAD CPC464 - hence the mix of 16 color wide pixels and 4 color square...

There's hope for us all...

Pixel Art / CRAZY BUS - animation dump.
« on: September 20, 2007, 01:07:17 pm »
I've got a tale about how I managed to create the first GBA gfx before nintendo had even dreamed up the idea...? How... well it goes like this.

Back in 1997, we got approach by a russian programmer who wanted us to develop some GFX for him for his latest game he called CRAZY BUS... it was a strange idea, based on the notion that the earth had become infested with 'martian potatoes' - in essence it was an excuse for a vertically scrolling 'puzzle' game where one matched femal martian potatoes to male martian potatoes, by launching them (the females that is) from 'the crazy bus'... The hook being that there were two types of martian potatoes, REDs and BLUES, and you had to match like for like...

anyway... the games was weird... sort of ok... and we did the work which involved creating shedloads of animations of these 'martian potatoes' - the only spec/breif given that they were supposed to be "happy and stupid"...  :B :0' :noob:

Thing is, as far as I know, the game never saw light of day... it was on PC, no color limitations, no frame limitations and I just went mental with frames and colors and so on... so, it never saw light of day...

...
...

Until the GBA was released about 4 years later... and lo and behold... there's the CRAZY BUS, pretty much part of the launch line up... only renamed to HOT POTATO... and there's my animations... (as well as a bunch of other ones done by someone else... [and funnily enough I wasn't even credited for any of them?!? ho hum])

So here are some of them - in all their glory...  enjoy.

General Discussion / .anm to .flc or animated gifs conversion tools?
« on: September 20, 2007, 10:36:33 am »
Hi, I've been going through a load of my old files recently and I've got shed loads of dpaint animator animations... (file format .anm) I wondered if anyone has or knows of any conversion utilities that convert from ANM's to FLC's or animated GIF's... or any other ideas as to how to access these old data files?

Cheers

PS. for some reason Jan Zimmerman never incorporated this format into Promotion - I'm sure he must have had a reason... I might email him and find out?

PPS. I don't really wanna spend cash on a tool neither, so open source or freeware would be ideal.

General Discussion / user names...
« on: December 19, 2006, 01:48:13 pm »
I was just trawling through the boards here and a thought that struck me was - where the hell do these user names originate? Yeah - i know it's not at pixel topic and perhaps should reside on the Official OT thread so feel free to shift it to somewhere more appropiate...

anyway... there's some obvioius ones like kennethfejer and whatnot but I'm more interested in the likes of "Faktablad" and "Akzidenz" and "ptoing" and "helm" - for example...

mine originates back when I used to smoke - well I still kind of smoke but trying to quit - and I used to have long hair and my buddies at the time used to refer to me as chewy - cos apparently my hair was similar to han solos best co pilot... this name morphed into bacca - then became baccaman... from a bastardisation of "hey have you got any 'baccy man" - like I said... I used to smoke... and this was an often request from my peers in the pub or bandmates who didn't work and needed hand outs... eventually it just became "baccaman" and the name stuck... the 21 comes from the fact that when I orginially used this moniker (on IGN forums) there already was a baccaman (apparently) - so it changed it to baccaman21 - and I've used it ever since...

so... where do your names come from... I'm intrigued... tell me more... :)
