Pixel Art / Re: Winged goblin - flight animation
« on: July 18, 2006, 01:21:05 pm »
What I notice immediately:

* He doesn't bend his arms at all, making it seem as though he has no elbows (I'm just thinking of most of the imp/demon aimations I've seen, and they usually bend their arms when they're flapping)

* The wing colors don't go very well with the rest of the sprite (duinno what's wrong with them -- too saturated is my first guess but I'm prolly wrong)

* Wings seem disconnected from arms (as if he is one of those old inventors who jumped off cliffs holding big wing contraptions) -- I don't know if that's what you intended, but if you want the wings to seem like part of him, ditch the dark outline on the arm at least.

* 3 frames is serviceable but it could look a lot nicer with 4 or 5.

* Middle frame looks like it has no arms

* No highlights on the dark brown "spikes" (or wooden frame?) of the wings

* Naturally the rest of his body should move a bit

I like it =D I just think I could like it a lot more ^_^

I was going for something like this:

or this:

Loud colors seem more like heavyhanded propaganda to me ^_^ (though in general, I'd say Rnd has not got enough contrast and his pics are usually too dark, whereas my communist guy has got more saturation that I would usually advise using)

Do you *want* all of the comments you recieve to be "Good job!"? Or would you rather have useful criticism? You will notice that there are some useful non-accusatory suggestions in the Mona Lisa thread, if you go back and look for them. I believe you if you say you did not trace it -- but can you see how traced it looks? (Probably you wouldn't notice unless you have seen lots of traced work, so it is understandable)

You don't need an apology, you need to edit your pixel work so it isn't so scratchy and trace-ish. Try to improve instead of taking offense.

I will grant you that people here can be the teensiest bit bloodthirsty, and sometimes they make some unfounded accusations. Do try to understand where they're coming from: they don't want the forum overrun by people faking work.

I believe it took you three hours, too -- I am as slow as you are ^_^ But your pic is still in the "rough lineart" stage. I suggest you try to polish it up some more.

I don't think you did anything wrong (if the pic is untraced).

low saturation can be a style choice, but low contrast should not be

Unless you are Kon. =)

Indigo + snake -- thank you very much for the technical discussion. It is nice to read something more in-depth for a change (as opposed to, say, the sort of posts that I make)

That is lovely (though I personally like the rightmost abstract blobby style from the first pic)

Hahahhaaaaa, I just noticed his fingers moving. That's magnificent!

Random suggestion for candy cane: make the whites whiter, the brights brighter ^_^, and maybe add a sorta thick black outline, and it will look like perfect cartoony foreground scenery.

That shading on the hat looks like something I would do, which means it can be a lot better and more realistic ;) (the shape of the shadow seems random, I mean).

No other crits save for animation, but you probably already know that it doesn't look extremely smooth or natural (look at real cloth billowing, the bottom of the coat should whip out after the rest of it, in a rippleish motion)

Fresh out of ideas for shading the hill =( I can see why you're stumped (I would keep to your simple shading style, tho)

Whoa.

*squints* *squints harder* That's like, mindbending =P

With the rough edges I'm assuming its a WIP, but I think you should finish it =) (espeshurly to make the bottom Bob look more like a face...if in fact it is a face ;).

XOXOXOXOXOXO

It does look neat =D Though I agree, the chin is distracting (it looks like a little brain)

The pallete could be more interesting, and the shadow on the forehead slightly darker? Also, the 50-50 dither patch, while not immediately noticeable, bothers me now that I've caught it (because there is none such dithering elsewhere in the pic).

It is very fun, and the border is eternally cool (except the incongruous curvy part at the bottom, since the rest of it is angular)

P.S. I just noticed his cross tatoo doesn't really curve around his forehead, which adds to the impression of flatness.

P.P.S. I love the texture of HIS right cheek.

Keep it shiny, I say -- it's self-consciously amusing.
