Challenges & Activities / Re: Hexquisite Corpse 4 (on pause)

Update(8/20): I polished up my tiles just a bit, not much though, and have added them to the progress file. I don't want to spend any more time on them, and i think this will have to be their final versions, whether or not i spot any problem going forward. ...i added a little black there along the righthand side of T2...  ...also fixed the top of T31...

Important to note: i don't have access to the full tiles(and shouldn't for now, since i may draw more tiles).

...and, as I understand it, the following 12 8 7 tiles are currently available:

T2(Done! by hANshOTtH3RD)
T4
T7(Done! by hANshOTtH3RD)
T16
T31(Done! by hANshOTtH3RD)
T40(Done! by hANshOTtH3RD)
T43
T45
T52
T61
T71
T88(¿¿WIP carson333??)

at this point i think my current tiles are done, although I may still decide to do more tiles. I guess it all depends on if i have time, and if this challenge resumes or not...

...is anyone else bugged that you can't zoom the progress image in the browser(nor the hex_3 final image for that matter)?

...one more thing(very sorry), why are the progress file's layers set to "background-combine-combine-replace"?
the template is "background-combine-combine-combine"... and there is no transparency allowed afaik...
I've actually decided to try and fix this: I un-optimised and re-optimised the main progress gif. I had some problems with the last frame adding transparency, and ended up also having to manually edit the layer attribute to get it to work. It appears to be unchanged; all i did was change layer 4 from replace to combine then un-optimised and re-optimised; here it is if anyone want's to double-check me:

I also took the liberty to fix that stray pixel on the right hand border of T47. There were some other issue, which I've already pm'd Indigo about, that i did not fix now; mostly the issue with the border between T56 & T46, and the lack of animation to T23, also some questions about the progress of various tiles that were claimed but never completed... idk i almost want to fix the T56 border issue myself(though for now it remains), but I think T23 basically requires a do-over -- unless Grossly Incandescent can come and finish it.

we are likeminded Rydin! remind me to spend some time on this... also, to work on my pixelviewer browser app.

...I've gotten too busy with different accounts... also reading up on making my own SMF forum(for an unrelated project).

...Do you want to color voxels like they're pixels (so each cube is flat shaded), or do you want them to have gradations (like each face or vertex has its gradient shading)?...

good question! I was interested in having different faces of the same voxel be different shades, and so I think my process will involve exporting some sort of tile-map(although one which only uses square geometry). I'm actually thinking it could all be represented as some sort of sliced gif x3.

...not sure about the viewer yet ...or most of the modeling process really, sort of side-tracked with other junk right now...

...so it's really just a daydream at the moment... ;)

2D & 3D / Voxel Editor+Animator Options...thoughts?
« on: July 21, 2020, 02:09:49 am »
I'm just wondering what is the best free(preferably open-source) way to get into voxel editing?
After searching around for a good free voxel editor to help me dip my toe once again into 3D design, i recently found a couple programs: Goxel and MagicaVoxel. Both are free(and will export to png slices, neat!). also ¿both? are open-source?(check back with me on that one):
I'm still having some issues figuring out all the controls or which one i like better; i guess as a still-sometimes-coder i usually like the one that compiles the easiest, although for now I'm just testing it out; but i'm wondering if anyone else is familiar with these two and has a preference?

...I also found this old thread about Blackbox Voxel Tool, which looks cool although it appears to be only for Windows...

Actually, it's entirely possible I'll go with Blender since I have some familiarity with it already, and it is open-source, and supposedly can do some stuff with voxels.

I'm curious about making animated voxel scene with light and shadow. I'm not really sure how I'll go about it at this point, but as far as i understand I can import a voxel.obj into blender, where I then add light and shadow. But it's still sort of unclear to me at this point how I will actually get it animated, since I haven't found a way to animate yet in Goxel or MagicaVoxel, and I'm not trying to do anything that would transform/deform a static model, but rather import an already animated voxel scene for shading.

...Do I need to download Unity? I guess it's free these days, although I'm totally unfamiliar with it, and am not sure where to start. i'm thinking it might be more than I can handle at the moment...

...Can Qubicle do what I want? I'm hesitant to start buying things without knowing it will suit my purposes...

...does anybody know where to point me in the right direction?

...thanks for reading.

General Discussion / Re: Pixelation 2.0

Well I don't really use discord, so sadly i don't know anything about that... Like I said though, i really don't think the site needs much changing to draw in more users. perhaps it would be nice if you could see a preview of each board on the main page, like this but under each board, and showing only posts for each specific board(perhaps also make the lists collapsible). I think this would make cruising the site for new stuff just a little easier.

...also, caching images would be good to fix all the dead links.

...and a better(& restful) search function would be nice(perhaps incorporating #tags, speaking of which, how do I tag things? where is this explained?).

...and don't let me forget! seams small, but i find it makes a big difference, is Having All Images Be Zoomable. there are some images in different posts, including some official thread-starters, that are not zoomable. how do we critique(or inspect) if we cannot zoom? i made a little widget to help with this btw.

it's a nice scene... but what's the color palette?

T88 Please.

any progress carson? it's been 11 days...

will you show us your borders? it should be pretty easy to do using the new template(if you know anything about selections in photoshop/gimp).

...also i made a little pixel viewer browser widget. it's downloadable and runs offline. I still don't understand why you can't zoom on the last two hex corpse collabs. Hex 1 & 2 both can be zoomed. Zoom is probably the most important feature of this website!...that and comments.

19
maybe I will give it another try...

...GIMP does do playback preview, but you can't zoom(at least not in 2.8.10, i don't want to upgrade though, I don't like the new layout)

20
I couldn't get the spec tool(or beta) to work in a webarchive 1st try:

...perhaps just need to try harder ;)

...i use gimp 2.8.10 for basically everything, which isn't really designed for pixel art specifically, although pretty fully functioned(I'm coming from a basic logo design background, and only recently started animating). so I've been using the mac finder as a quick view, but it tends to blur when zooming gifs. ...anyway so here is what I'm beginning to use myself. it's kind of barebones although it solves my immediate problem...and there is always room for improvement!

ps Do let me know if you have problems with it!
