Pixel Art / Frost Giant - Help
« on: October 12, 2017, 12:14:12 am »
I'm making a Female Frost Giant holding an Axe. 64x32 and 32x32. How do you guys think I could improve it.
I was going for glimmering skin. And also a Castlevania Symphony of the Night approach without copying it entirely. Am I anti-aliasing to much? Is the color palette ok?
I want to learn more about what I'm doing right and wrong.

Thanks

General Discussion / Pixel art production times and quotation
« on: August 01, 2017, 01:03:43 am »
Hi guys,
I'm not so new to pixel art creation, but when working for clients, I'm struggling to ascertain the average production speed.

I know it is varies based on detail, design, size and experience. But what I am asking is; how can you judge yourself? How do you know when you are producing too slow, or doing too much, when less is required, or if you are getting yourself into a deep hole of work and little pay.

Are there exemplars in the industry who can give some guidance to us learning the trade? Some kind of mentoring or just quick chats about the work I (we as noobs) produce, the time it should of took, the price it should have cost.

How can I acquire or gain this kind of knowledge without trail and error alone. I know things takes years to learn, but you
experienced guys out there, can you help an aspiring artist out with some recommendations with work-flows, production speed and quotation expectations/estimates?

Are there any old threads regarding this topic? I've seen the ones about prices per hour. Most clients hate per hour, they all want per frame or per asset. This kind of quotation is tricky to juggle.

General Discussion / Help with Cosmigo Pro Motion
« on: July 29, 2017, 12:30:40 am »
Hi Guys,
Sorry for the noob questions.
I have tried to use Cosmigo Pro Motion for quite a while and there are some basic thing that I think I just can't get right. I really struggle to find decent, easy to understand tips. Could you help me out with the following:

Is it possible to selected a color on your canvas (like magic wand) and simply delete it?
Is there a such thing as an eraser tool? Or are you forced to use a color or transparency on your brush.
Is there a way to select a section of your canvas and simply copy and paste it, or move it? Or must you use the brush tool for that.
Is there a way to NOT have color indexing, just let you free-roam with colors.
Is there a way to use brush sizes that are in-between (or larger than) the predefined sizes? Without creating your own brushes.

I feel really stupid using the software sometimes as it is so foreign to Aseprite, Pyxel Edit, or Photoshop. But it seems like the most professional program to use and I would like to know more about it's advantages.

Any help you can offer would be amazing.

Pixel Art / [Community To Edit] Battle of Olympus - Scene
« on: June 17, 2017, 03:04:04 pm »
Hey guys, I really loved Battle of Olympus, so I put together a little mockup of the game as I would have wanted it look, aiming to enhance it.

EDIT. If anyone uses Pyxel Edit, here is the working file:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxwHGanZaui0UXpuSHotODk5WjQ

But I was thinking, does someone want to pick up on this and keep on improving it? Please do, I'd love to see peoples edits.
No restrictions other than 16x16 blocks and keep it the same resolution.
In general, I was trying to increase the fidelity of the scene by adding more colors, breaking the NES restrictions.

1st Attempt: Do something

Pixel Art / Farm Field scene mockup - Please help
« on: April 27, 2017, 09:05:42 pm »

Please help me improve this scene.
I'm trying to make a farm field level and I just threw this together to get some visualisation, but I'm not sure where to add detail and if the colors are working well.

Pixel Art / Please help improve an animated Fish
« on: October 31, 2016, 11:31:01 am »
Hi guys,
This is my first post.

I'm working on a fish. It has a few loops:
  • Swim
  • Shoot
  • Projectile
  • Slap on land
  • Die

I'm struggling with the die animation.... I'm having a hard time working out an appropriate loop. Also, I've emailed the person I'm doing it for but it's not clear whether it dies on land or in the water yet.
Anyway, it would be great to get your feedback on it. Anything you feel could be improved I would be happy to listen to. The purpose of this post is to learn to improve my process. So thank you in advance.

Job offers / [CLOSED - Pixel Artist Found]
« on: October 28, 2016, 11:48:42 pm »
Hello,

xoMishka is a 2D side scrolling game which is being developed in Unity 5.
I require a pixel artist who can do character/enemy animations and tilesets.
The game's color palette is based on the NES color palette.

The team currently consists of:
1x C# Developer, artist/animator, designer (Me)
1x Music and SFX Designer
1x Artist (You)
I need to offload the artwork to someone as I need to focus on development and design.

You play as the a mouse, the world around you is larger than you. I found a lot of inspiration from Arriety as the object around the main player really give an interesting perspective on scale.
If you're not familiar with Arriety - please see here: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Arriety&atb=v34-3a_&iar=images&iax=1&ia=images

The production of the game will be quite slow. But I am trying to backlog most of the artwork to make things easier for the future. I will require to collaborate with the artist to discuss ideas in order to get a nice result.

I am aiming for a similar quality and style as Shovel Knight, without copying it.

This game has 6 areas needing tilesets/fixed stage artwork:
  • Mouse Home
  • Garden
  • Drain Pipes
  • Underground Tunnels
  • Inside the Walls
  • Final Encounter

The game only has a few Characters, but mainly it will have numerous enemies.

Here are some samples that I created myself, I would like the game to look similar to this:

Early prototype - wrong colors

Payment opportunity:
You tell me. I might not be able to afford it if your looking to get rich.

Payment in AUD - Australian Dollars
Price is negotiable depending on experience.

All artworks could have 3 potential feedback revisions per piece prior payment arrangement.

It's very important that if you begin working on this project you complete it.

Deadline for artwork will be 4-months from the start date.

Things to expect from me:
A list of assets with descriptions.
Visual sources for inspiration.
Critique on artwork produced.
Diligent and fast response to communication.
Demonstrations of discussed ideas. This means I might create some artwork to help get the idea across.

Things to expect from the artist:
Marking progress on the asset sheet.
Provide concepts/ideas/colors/discuss/sketch before production to mitigate wasted work.
Someone passionate about the end result, not about making decisions to satisfy themselves.
Looping .gif samples of animations, mockups of how a tileset might be used, backgrounds to be shown in context with artwork to show relevance.
Diligent and fast response to communication.

Please email Joe: mrsilipo@gmail.com    if you are interested, with a sample of relevant work for this project.
Happy to meet on Skype for more info Skype name: mrsilipo

PM's will be viewed, but not as fast as direct email.
