Pixel Art / Re: A little dump of little dumplings.

These are sweet, except for that third one; I mean, the execution is alright, but the design is way off.

Anyway, you know that in the past your stuff has lead to the development some strange, awkward man-crush on my part, and this stuff really just builds on that, so take my conflicted emotions for.. whatever they're worth...  :-\

Dunno if you were looking for crits, and I don't really have any anyway. You could maybe try some aa in places, smooth out some of the jaggies.

haha Guys, guys, I think he was kidding about the "us not liking him" thing. You know, he's being like "Hey, I go visit other forums, but don't worry... I still love you".

Anyway... I agree with Helm, in that I also think mixed resolution pieces rarely come out well. I did a small edit, which I think picks up on what Helm was trying to say about easing the transition:

Another thing that may be causing problems is the fact that your larger "pixels" aren't gridded in anyway I can figure out. On the back of the skull, for example, there are places where you are using 3-4x size pixels, yet have single pixel spaces between them at certain points. For me, this kind of breaks the "large pixel" thing, and gives off more of a "blob of colour" impression. I dunno..

Anyway, despite my distaste for mixed resolution, this does look pretty cool. Also, if you can manage to pull it off you'll be my hero, whatever that's worth, so... keep it up! ;D

Hey, nice stuff... sexiest lines I've ever seen!:P

Seriously, though, this is coming along really nicely. I've only a few crits, and I did a small edit to help illustrate, 'cause sometimes my mouth-words don't make so much sense:

One of (maybe the only) major thing I changed involved shading. In certain places (like the top arm) some of the AA was done in a way that made the area seem blurry. The diagrammy thing to the right of the edit isn't the best example (ptoing made a better one a while ago under a post by Ego, and I'm sure there are others floating around), but It'll work. AA is meant to smooth out areas, and when you do it like it's done in the x'd version (just pile lighter colours on top of darker ones) it just makes lines appear fatter, and blurry.

The other thing I did (hopefully) was make the light source a bit more consistent . In your version there are, in places, some weird things going on. In some places, for example, you have the brightest highlight beside, like, a midtone or light shadow and it just kind of makes for jaggies.

I also agree with Eyecraft about the palette; the ramp seems a bit inconsistent saturation wise. That's a personal choice though, I think, and it's really just fine the way it is, so... I dunno, take that for whatever it's worth.

This is looking hot, and the improvement from the original's pretty significant. Good stuff.

Oh, and thanks for the colours! I love seeing other people take on my lines :D

I love the palette. Looks very.. I dunno, gritty? In a good way, of course :P.

If you lower the eyes anymore, I think you'll have to lower the ears as well, but I may be wrong (not so good at anatomy myself). Either way, it should look quite tasty when finished.

Thanks for the crits guys.

Akzidenz: I took your advice on the presents, as they did seem too dark, and blended in too much with the darker bits in the background. I wonder now, though, if they don't blend in too much with the lighter parts... Meh. Opinions?

Sampe: I see where you're going with that, but I feel that upping the contrast give it a bit too much of a plastic-ish feel, which isn't really what I was going for. I did, however, fix that green dot. :P

I also tweaked some colours, changed some stuff. I un-AA'd the moon, too, just so people could see what it'd look like. I think I like the AA'd one better myself, but I'm still a bit unsure..

Anyhoo, thanks again guys.  :)

hehe... oops. Forgot to post the update. First post.

Pixel Art / Merry thing *Update: 12/13/06, finished*
« on: December 08, 2006, 05:17:12 pm »

It's a merry wintry christmassy thing. Also, it's the first bit of pixel art I've done in... a while :P

Possible problems:
Colours blending together (the dark green and the purple, etc.?)
AA'd moon? (nothing else is aa'd, basically. Looks out of place?)

Crits on anything that comes to mind would be nice... I'd like to get it all polished up and what-not.

Edit: I think, unless anyone has anymore big crits, I'm gonna call it done. Thanks to all who replied. :)

General Discussion / Re: Pixelation Demographics

I'm male and 20, though I'm pretty effeminate and I act like I'm around 9 or 10. Guess I can fill in just about any demographical gaps, should the need arise. :y:

something you guys should know quick about her...this is maybe her 3rd pixel work ever so.

so... the crits should be extra helpful?

Other's have probably already mentioned it, but actually studying trees, or at least pics of tress, would probably be a big help. This honestly looks pretty nice, especially considering it's an early work, but nevertheless, treetops are (at least in my limited experience) rarely so close to being perfectly spherical. Bacca's edit is really solid, so I'd take it to heart. That said, the best way to learn is from directly observing life. That way you don't end up just interpreting an interpretation... or so they tell me.

All that said, nice start! This is good and, if you put the crits to good use, could become exceptional.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: explosive thingy [Updated need C&C]

Looking good. Major improvement from the original post. The spark/flame/fuse... thingy... should, I think, be more like it is in Franky's edit. In yours, right now, it looks like a tassel or something because of the outline and the colours you've chosen (which should be brighter, imo; try pure white/really highly saturated yellows).

Nice work. Keep it up. :)

Oh, and I just noticed... assuming that ramp you've included is the actual palette, you could probably stand to use fewer shades. Several of these are near repeats.

I like this a lot, overall. The tiles look great, as do the larger sprites, and that beach in the corner, especially the water, is stunning.

I'm finding the gold sprites pretty hard to read, especially the archer. I think you might be trying to pack too much detail into such a small space, but the monochrome...ness... may also be an issue, as willfaulds mentioned.

There's a bit of a style clash going on too, mostly caused, I think, by the inconsistency of black outlines (the buildings are outline, for example, but trees, mountains, rocks, etc aren't).

This looks really nice though. I really love that beach. :P
