Pixel Art / Re: Modern Love [*Update*]
« on: April 12, 2007, 10:31:13 pm »
Update. I was working on it as the comments were coming in, obviously, and only just checked the thread now, so appy-polly-loggies if I didn't address some of the crits.. don't worry, though, it'll happen. :P

Alk: The wound thing I think everyone pretty much covered for me :P The girls legs I slimmed; seems to be a problem of mine, overly fat legs... Maybe it's some kind of subconscious fetish... Heh, either way, I'll have to work on that. And the blood... it's a temporary pool, since there'll be a background. I'll recolour to fit when all's done.

clr: Glad you like. ;D Hopefully the legs are better now (fatness-wise, that is... still need a lot of work on the shading, wrinkles and such).

B.O.B: I raised the foot, and I think I see the problem with the breast. The highlight is just way too high up right now. So I'll fix that. I'm glad you like the guy's expression, 'cause originally it was just a generic "oh good Christ, I've been shot in the spine" face as opposed to a love struck one.

Sharm: Again, hopefully they're better now. On a side note, if they aren't (I'm not so great at anatomy, and even less so at female anatomy), I always love edits. ;D

Feron: Good point (about the back-blood). I'll more than likely throw it in next update.

Thanks for all the crits, guys. Like I said (or... maybe I didn't, but anyway), this is still a pretty early WIP so keep the critique coming. For those who care, I'll be away until sometime later tomorrow so I won't be updating anymore at least till then. G'night.

Pixel Art / Modern Love [*Updated Again*]

After several centuries of reliance upon his trusty bow, cupid finally decided it was time to modernize.

These things take time.

Anyway, new stuff. Obviously still very much a WIP, but I thought I'd get help from an early stage this time. Looking for crits on anatomy, pose, colours (so far), etc.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to add a few colours, particularly to the girl's shirt, which is maybe slightly flat looking at the moment in comparison to the rest of the pic. But I might not. Anyway, that's what your opinions are for. :P So, uh... let's hear it!

Pixel Art / Re: The end of days [Update]

Just a minor update. I changed the eyes, the weird jaw bump-thing, changed the sky colour. There's still some other stuff that B.O.B. pointed out which I haven't gotten to just yet, but fear not. It will be done. :P

Setz: Good call. Hopefully the new colour helps.

Aeon: I fixed the jaw thing, as I said, and changed the sky, so hopefully it's doing better now.

Dopple: It's ok, man. I cried a bit, too. :P Actually, I do like the new colour, but in a different way... I think the old one (with the red sky) seemed more apocalyptic... hotter, I guess. But whatever. I'll play with it more.

B.O.B.: I think you're probably right about the chunky lines. That said, even though it's probably going to hurt the piece in the end, I think I'm sticking with 'em. The whole cartoonish lack of depth thing has actually grown on me, and anyway, without the dark lines, I feel like the background and the dino don't really... I dunno... merge? Right now, despite the harm they cause, I think the consistent thick outlines give the piece some cohesion. I'm probably talking out of my ass though (as I often am) so argue with me, and I may cave yet. ;D

Thanks for all the fine crits, guys. I think this is coming along rather well.

Updated again.

Aeon: Ah, gotcha. That big flaming chunk is actually supposed to be off in the distance as well. It's now behind a mountain so hopefully that takes care of that. ;D

Dopple: It's probably because I know what it's supposed to be, but I just can't see the sky as a cliff face, but regardless... I see your point. :P So, I tried to follow your suggestion. Have I helped, or just further aggravated the situation?

edit: just a minor note for those who care: the colour count in the latest update has been reduced to 16 from the original 20.

I think miscdude meant the neck looked to thick, not too long. I sort of agree, and I did a small edit (hope you're cool with that, alk):

I did a bit of a general edit on the face, too. You had some banding going on in places (in places your AA... overlapped, for lack of a better term and caused blurriness), especially in the hair. The chin, too, I edited, as I thought it looked a bit small.

The pose, colouring, all that stuff looks pretty good so far. Looking forward to seeing it finished. ;D

P.S.: looking at my edit now, I think your original hair is quite a bit better. The chin, neck, etc. changes should still be... somewhat valid, at least if not entirely useful. :P

Updated, though AA/dithering/other stuff like that still probably needs working over..

Aeon: Thanks for the crits; (almost) all are, I think, valid, and so (almost) all were implemented. I say almost, because I disagree to an extent about the tail. The volcano's supposed to be quite a way off in the distance, and so I don't think the light would really be intense enough to have much effect on the tail. I could be very wrong though, as I've never actually seen an eruption in real life and don't have any idea how much light one would create. So, if anyone else has an opinion I'm more than open to it. :P

Pixel Art / The end of days [Update: finished]
« on: April 11, 2007, 12:21:01 pm »
This is the first bit of pixelling that I've done in quite some time that I consider good enough to bother posting. I've taken it about as far as I can on my own, I think, so I figure it's time to get some outside opinions. So... without further ado:

As ever, C&C is greatly appreciated. Tell me what needs to be done!

Update: I now consider this done. Stuff could probably still be done to it, but I'm getting tired of it, and it's honestly at a point where I'm happy with it. Thanks to everyone for the excellent critique. The finished piece can be seen in my gallery on Pixeljoint.

I think one of the major problems here stems from the lack of details, especially in the head, around the eyes. You're trying to fill in a lot of empty, 'smooth' space, and as a result, the picture looks a bit pillowy and flat.
I did a quick edit on the head, to show what I mean.

I added little things like wrinkles around the eyes, more pronounced cheek bones, and stuff like that. Another thing that may be taking away from this piece is the fact that it's mirrored. I tried to address that, too, but probably didn't fully fix it.

The update is a nice improvement, by the way. Keep it up. :)

Pixel Art / Re: [wip] Wolf - where am I going wrong?
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:54:20 pm »
This is where I think you should go with it. As it stands there are a few anatomical problems that stick out to me. Keep in mind that I studied no references before making the edit, so it could still be way off:

What I did: Shrunk the feet, repositioned the legs slightly, widened the chest, lowered the head (I think.. maybe by 1 pixel?), changed the belly almost entirely (unless this wolf is, like, a collie, its underbelly shouldn't be such a drastically different colour), and removed the black/dark patches on the back (personal prefernce, really, but I've never seen a wolf coloured like that :P).

The palette in this is  nice, the head and neck are very nicely shaped. It's really quite nice, overall, except for the mentioned anatomical thingies. The only other thing I'd mention is to watch out for stray pixels. Pixel art (far as I understand) is first and foremost about control, and there are a number of oddly placed/stray pixels. Some of that grayish brown used on the body, for example, and the two random black pixels.

Good stuff, though. Keep it up. ;D

I figure after the generic "Add more ears!" comment, I owe you some actual critique :P

I think the face could stand to be a bit less generic, a bit more defined. I made an edit, as I'm wont to do (hope you don't mind):

It pretty much speaks for itself. deeper shadows, more definition, a bit more character, maybe... I dunno.

Something else I just picked up on: The right (our left) arm is a bit stiff, seems to be lacking definition (bicep, elbow, wrist the whole upper arm/forearm/ hand separation is almost unnoticeable). The original black blobs were a bit more... dynamic, for lack of a better word; more anatomically correct, I guess.

Otherwise, this is coming along really nicely. ;D
