Pixel Art / Re: Some demon thing I made up (Updated 09/25/08)
« on: September 25, 2008, 02:58:25 pm »
Indeed it is Hellboy, but Mignola totally stole my idea. :P

Reading chimico's crits, I came to dislike the original anatomy, so I took this in a more, um... proportionate direction. The anatomy/pose/everything is still all screwed up. This is just meant as a rough update to show where I'm heading with the thing.

I'm in a rush at the moment, so I'll give a proper response to the crits when I'm a little less pressed.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Edit:
Here's a more complete update. Just messing around with the palette, mostly.  The lighting is all off, and I'm sure the anatomy is wrong as well.
Hopefully, the issues with the direction of gaze has been fixed (somewhat),  I changed the direction of the tail, but it still doesn't flow great. The original problem with the legs is obviously not an issue anymore, but new ones now abound, I'm sure.

I can't decide if I like the blue tone or not.

Thanks again, guys. Please, don't stop the crits.

My eyes hurt when I look at it now so I guess it's time for some outside opinions. This is kind of the first thing I've done in a while, so if you'd be so kind, I could use some help scraping off the rust.

Pixel Art / Re: Secret of Mana-style Sprite
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:07:31 pm »
You know, given the larger size, higher colour count, and more detail in your sprite, SOM3's sprites are probably a better model (maybe you're already using these, in which case just ignore me). I agree with Dusty, too. Regardless of whether you're trying to emulate SOM's style, a slightly more dynamic pose would probably look cool.

Pixel Art / Re: Organicly winged spaceships (updated)
« on: April 30, 2008, 03:02:17 pm »
I'd argue that animating a winged spaceship will allow him to focus on the animation of the wings, ignoring their effect on the body (of say, a dragon) thus making the process easier, if anything. Also, part of the charm here, for me, is the ridiculousness of it. I mean, yeah, flapping wings on a spaceship would be useless, but it's that whole "who-gives-a-shit-because-it-looks-cool" mentality that works for me here. It's like the whole space corvette thing in Heavy Metal. If you actually tried to enter the atmosphere in something like that you'd be instantly incinerated, but who cares. The man is flying a corvette. In space. Likewise piloting a giant sword with dragon wings doesn't have to be logical. It's just fun.

Oh, and I do agree with you, Sharp. I mean, obviously the best way to learn animation, as with anything, is to study life (and in this case, I'd say studying a bat's method of flight would be even more informative that attempting a dragon). So yeah, I'd say study the bat, and apply what you learn to the spaceship.

(This is likely terrible advice, so feel free to ignore it, Souly, and everyone else feel free to let me know as violently as I deserve. And Souly, if the chassis isn't a sword, it should be. :P).

Forgive me. I am a liar. :'( I think the colours are all OK...

In fact, I've changed my mind entirely and now think there should be more black, or at least a significantly dark 'close-to-black' colour. I tried to get the hat more centred, and shifted some stuff around (his head, a leg, one arm) to make his stance more balanced because I thought he was leaning a bit far forward.

Can't wait to see him animated (if you're planning on it).

He's a cute little guy, and not at all what I was expecting.  :P

I think the black is unnecessary, you probably only need one of the bluish grays and darker orange colours, and the hat seems a bit off centre. Otherwise, I like it very much.

I changed the eyes again, slightly. Yours do look more 'Mario', but I want to keep him looking downwards so this is probably as close as I'll get, barring an awesome edit that keeps both intact (hinthintnudgenudge everybody... hinthintnudgenudge indeed).

Thanks to everyone for all the love. Keep it coming, I'm greedy.

This needs an anatomical overhaul. My grasp of anatomy isn't perfect, but I did a quick sketch to highlight some issues.

The different parts of his body all seem to exist independently, and they don't connect in a natural way. The shoulders and arms should flow into one anoter, as should chest to shoulders, abdomen to groin to legs, etc. Though the legs clearly weren't mirrored, they seem to point in opposite directions, which puts him in an uncomfortable, if not impossible, stance. Given the direction the rest of his body is pointing, his left (our right) leg should be turned more towards his right, as should the left foot. His hands are also radically different in size, which gives a strange impression. I shrunk his head somewhat; probably way too much. Your head size isn't necessarily wrong, but I assumed you were going for normal human proportions, and adjusted its proportions with regard to the length of his arms.

It would help you a lot, I think, to spend some time practicing on paper with reference to life, photographs or an anatomy book, and throwing down some rough sketches before attempting this in pixels. Not to sound discouraging or hypocritical, since my own grasp of anatomy is far from perfect. it's just that, regardless of who it comes from the fact of a firm grasp on these kinds of things being elemental to artwork in any medium remains true.

Pixel Art / Re: Rocky Tileset (In Progress)

I may be wrong, but I think by "moderate detailing on the ceiling" meant something like this:

Just to make things a bit less flat. This edit's super quick, sloppy and way too obviously tiled, but still... :)

I like the new ceiling. It's much better than the spikes, I think.
