General Discussion / Re: More than 50 frames?
« on: October 04, 2010, 11:56:23 pm »
I'm sure I'll get some haters from this post, but I did a short animation for pgil for xmas 09 that was 209 frames with... drum roll...
"adobe image ready"
I know there isn't a lot of love for this particular program but I like it. Not only does it have multiple undo's which is nice, It has alot of features that come with being familiar with P.S.
I think alot of people find the layering aspect to be cumbersome but I find it to be helpful sometimes. just me.

Crazy, you said:

Actually, it is flat at the bottom, there's just a tad of perspective. I suppose it's still a problem that that isn't clear, so I'll get on it.

You meant: (there's just a "JAD" of perspective) right?

Lol, j/k, but seriously, you should animate this, very nice so far :>

Haven't played much baseball in my life, but from what I remember, you typically wanna get both hands on the grip. Atm, you only have enough room for 1 maybe 1 1/2 grips length.

I think by making that part longer, and maybe lose the dramatic slope you have fixes the bats core problems. I still think it can be improved tho even after a quick edit.

love the shotgun icon btw.

after a second look, even this bats grip seems a bit short imo... maybe taking it even further would help?

I was looking over this weeks challenge at www.pixeljoint.com and came up with this idea.
I find myself participating in these events but never entering them. Perhaps cause I start a little too late in the game, or I just don't feel my stuff is good enough to compete.
Whatever the case may be, Heres what I got so far.
   dirty edit...

I'm thinking about adding an impact, complete with ripple effect and maybe some debris/flames around the p.o.i.  On the backside of our home, maybe the blast was so intense that pieces kinda break off leaving behind a bunch of astroid/earth_chunks to drift off.
I guess this is kinda bending the rules for the compo and was wondering what you guys think... I'll try my best to finish this one on time.

The fish looks too much like Nemo  :(

Well, if by that, you mean its a clown fish, then uh yeah I guess... but seriously? I don't really think its even remotely an issue...
Personally, I like the fish... its not oooh aaahh amazing or anything, but I think it has potential. Its tough to compete with big iconic characters unless you have some defining characteristics that separate it from the pack (Like Daffy vs Donald), perhaps that's what Koi Kami Mauro is talking about? John Kricfalusi I think refers back to this realm of thought, talking about it in his blog quite a bit.

On a side note... The big Floating rocks, single-lined Highlights, really bother me. Maybe tone it down a bit? I dunno, something needs to be done with, maybe play around with it some more...

Just wanted to get your image visible without a hyperlink

I think its a vast improvement even on my edit... which is great... I'm sure it could be taken even further with the help of some of our more experienced artists in here...

Also, not sure if the top rocks are working much to your advantage... if the setting is suppose to be an underwater cave, then we need to think about revamping everything imo.
Maybe just do away with the top rocks altogether.. or instead of layering the top... just show one layer of em. Right now, its just throwing a weird perspective at me... I dunno, maybe Its not... just looks strange.

Curious to see what the coral and other seescapes you come up with, look like!

A couple of things I'de like to say:

I'm assuming that this is an in-game screen shot of some sort of game-maker program? the weird gradient background thing I think has to go, if you really want to have the effect, save it for when your done, just know that its not pixel art and is kinda ugly imo. You probably already knew that this tho :P

The rocks look okay, I think they read a little flat.  Your rocks could use a little more volume, so I did a quick edit to show you what you could achieve with your current palette.

Did this kinda quick just to show you the difference... you could obviously add more layers to give it even more depth like you did.
Maybe add some more scattered rocks in the foreground.. some plant life.. I'm sure you have a ton of cool ideas and I cant wait to see more!

One last thing:i The palette is a bit generic er, Isn't there some contest on PJ about fish games or something? If its a set palette, then omit what I just said :/

While my abilities are still rough around the edges I hope I have helped you in the least.
Good luck to you!

General Discussion / Re: Would this be considered bad practice?

The subject kinda parallels this thread http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=7291.msg109226#msg109226
Except it doesn't in any way.
"Art theft" is a whole different story.

I guess I worded that poorly,(I didnt mean the whole thread) If you follow the link, you can clearly see I was referring mostly to Helms quote.
to be honest I don't think much of it is tracing, just copying. Is that less bad?

And I agree with you completely that its not even close to the subject of stealing art... unless you were to take somebody elses 3d renders and pixel them, especially without permission...I believe there is minor commonalitys going on with what was discussed in topic 7291 and what is being discussed here in topic 10161

Well, I think I'm a bit closer to completion on this...

I learned some things the hard way.
The biggest thing, is to polish your lines first then fill in the details...

I noticed by not doing that, I had to go back and tweak and tweak and tweak, and even with this version, I'm noticing some weird jadedness, most notably on the green part toward the bottom.

The shading I think is pretty good, It doesnt read flat to me.. and this is a first. Was thinking about changing the shape of the cheek highlight to push the tomatoes roundness a bit further, but I'm not sure if that would do it or not.

well, here ya go!

Me and 1ucas talked about this a little in the chat room.

I think its a neat idea personally and find myself wanting to see more. Would really like to see a 3d walk cycle render turned into pixels :D
So the question is this cheating?
The subject kinda parallels this thread http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=7291.msg109226#msg109226

I dont think it really is cheating in my world and I'm sure alot of people will disagree.
Cheating is ripping someones work, modifying it or not, and calling it your own.
Cheating is also doing what 1ucas did, but with somebody elses render... but its his so I say no worries.
Curious to see what other people have to say about this.
