Pixel Art / Re: Doom Mod death animation
« on: October 05, 2005, 08:21:36 pm »
When modifying Doom sprites, you can't insert extra frames of animation. The frame rate is what it is, and you have to live with it. I used to make Doom mods all of the time, so I know how hard it is to create decent-looking death animations. The trick is to make sure there is that constant flow. Almost everything should  continue animating and nothing should remain too stagnant.  Keep an eye out for things that don't move. For example: Those spikes on our left should stay animating during their drop, but there is a frame where they just kind of stop, then continue animating. Also, the brain becomes exposed at the top of the head, but just disappears in a single frame. I understand that it's dropping out, but even adding the slightest quiver to show some stress would help a lot.

Anything by Cave is good.

Also try Space Invaders '95, Blazing Star, and Guwange.

I'm going to attempt a fully animated piece, so mine will take a while, especially since I haven't done animation work in a long time. Right now I'm working on a sort of 'splash screen' of when Pirate Zolthorg initiates his "super". (Very Capcom-esque.)

- EDIT -

No longer a splash screen, but an introduction. And instead of a fighter, I think I'll stick with a really nice platformer. Hoorah!

Progress (As of 9/29/05)

Yeah. I was sick and had a bottle of chloriseptic spray.

No deadline? Oh. Then it looks like I'm back in.

Looks like it's about $100, but there is a 30-day trial version available. Still, $100 for a decent art program isn't bad at all.

I use MSPaint and, on some rare occassions, Photoshop (for adjusting contrast levels and such.) I'm willing to give Promotion a try though.

Most of these have already been seen, but there are some new ones in the bunch...
These were all created while I was at work, and were created in order to pass the time. I'll never touch these again, but feel free to crit or modify or complete.

If you have any questions as far as what a certain image is supposed to be, feel free to ask.

For now, I'm off to work on a larger piece that has been development for some time. (My avatar is a preview of sorts.) I hope I finish it some day!

Ah hell. I'll give it a go. Sign me up.

Or not. I've got a friend flying in from Phoenix and staying with me; I believe that Monday is his last day... but if he is leaving early in the morning, then I'll stay on-board.

Update: Yeah, I'm out. My friend leaves Monday night. Perhaps I'll be part of the next challengs.
