Pixel Art / [Feedback] Idle and Shooting Animation
« on: March 06, 2018, 01:40:38 pm »
Hi! After putting it off for a long time, I decided to try doing animated pixel art. Here are animated idle and shooting sprites respectively:

Working on these has brought up a lot of questions, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on them:
1) On a sprite of this scale, or even smaller, how does one go about making more subtle movements where moving it 1 pixel is too much? I feel like it makes the animation look weird and jumpy.
2) I started out with completed still sprites for both of these, but I've seen others cut their sprites in to pieces (left leg, left arm, right arm, head, etc.) Does that make things easier to animate?
3) How do you animate more complicated parts like hair? As you can see, I took the lazy route of just animating pieces at the ends...

Other than these questions, I'd love to hear all your feedback and criticism!

Pixel Art / [CC] Grayscale Shading Help?
« on: June 25, 2017, 09:07:13 am »
Hi! I figured I needed to get used to using a limited palette, so I tried shading with just 8 shades of gray.

I've also been practicing drawing anatomy.

I guess I'm not really satisfied with his metal arm, since it doesn't look very metal. I was told that metals tended to have a lot of contrast, but it still doesn't look quite metal-y enough. Any thoughts? Also, I'd love to hear how I can shade it better or choose more fitting colors!

Pixel Art / [C+C] Waist-up portrait
« on: June 15, 2017, 07:55:51 pm »
Hiya! I'm at it again (after a bit of a hiatus) and I've just recently drawn this:

(I personally think it's better viewed at 2x scale.)

This is a bit of a different style from how I usually do things, and it's also the first time I've done that pattern-mapping thing I did with his scarf. I guess my biggest questions are 1) Is there some easier way to map a pattern on a surface other than manually drawing it like I did here? and 2) What's a better approach to drawing fur? (It's a little hard to tell, but the lighter part of his coat, at the collar, is supposed to be fur.)

I'd also love to hear all your comments and constructive criticism!  ;D

Pixel Art / [CC] Beast Boy and Raven from Teen Titans
« on: May 17, 2017, 06:16:21 pm »

I'm actually a lot happier with how Beast Boy turned out than Raven. I don't usually pick my own colors. Most of the time, I pull the palettes from existing sprites, but I felt adventurous and picked my own colors for Beast Boy? Any feedback on the color choices? Words of advice on how to do better next time?

As for Raven, well... she feels a little off. It might be her hair, or the weird disalignment of her eyes, which I couldn't figure out how to really deal with. Anything in particular that strikes you as off? I chickened out with picking my own colors so these are actually just pulled from a bunch of different sprites. Also, yes, I understand that it doesn't look a lot like the Raven in the cartoon. I took my artistic liberties with her, I guess? :blind:

Pixel Art / [C+C] Fire Emblem-esque Mugshot
« on: February 26, 2017, 05:40:28 am »
Hi! I'm making mugshots from a game, and I'd really appreciate some help with polishing this first one before I turn it in. Comments and critique on all parts are welcome, but I'd also like to hear if there's a better way of coloring the black scarf. It just doesn't seem to come across as black to me. Thanks!

Oh, and as a note, it'll be used scaled twice its size in the game.

Pixel Art / First(ish) attempt at pixel art
« on: August 04, 2016, 12:40:19 pm »
Hi! The reason I put tacked an (ish) at the end of that is because it's technically not my first attempt at pixel art as I used to draw pixels as a hobby some few years ago. They weren't very good and they never really involved any shading, or much drawing from scratch, so I don't really want to count them towards my experience haha. Here's an example from a few years ago (the most recent one I could find, really):

Flat features drawn over a generic base.

After a while, I stopped doing pixel art, and eventually, drawing altogether, but after that two-year long art block, I'm trying to get back into it. Here's my first work since the hiatus:

I'd like some critique on it, specifically on the shading and the lineart. I'm really not very good at shading because I never used to do it, not even on my traditional works. (The light source is supposed to be in the upper left.) And, well, I took forever drawing the lineart because getting the pixels to match up with a scaled down sketch is hell. I'd love if you guys pointed out the wonky looking parts and ways you guys do your lineart!

Oh, and one last thing. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to pick which colors to use. I knew I wanted red hair and a green scarf, but when I pick the colors out myself, it just really looks lackluster and plain. The colors here are taken from a few sprites from Pokemon Diamond haha. So, how do you guys choose your palettes?
