I would recommend darkening the dark red shade on the second dude, but the petals still read to me as hair. Putting them on the front of the head, rather than the back like this can help.

Thank you both for feedback!

Would you say this is dialed back enough?

The framerate seems to be perfect now, but there are some things I would change.

left is mine right is yours

I couldn't get them to render in the same framerate, but eh.

What I changed:
- In some frames, the arms were in the exact same place, so I nudged the a bit.
- The feet were also wonky in some places.
- I made the face bob left and right.
- I made the hat bounce when he goes down, since it's not glued on his head.

edit: also, MysteryMeat is right, he looks likes he has a limp.

At the moment, there's a lot to improve on the character themselves, but is there a better way I should be animating the umbrella? Is it creating too wide an arc for player character movement in a platformer?

Looks great!

If you're trying to apply cartoon physics into your game the umbrella is definitely believable and accurate (because everything is believable in cartoons). Like MysteryMeat said, it's going way too fast. I believe there a few threads about framerate in the animation section, but I'm not sure.

The last guy immediately read to me as a robot mom with a perm, is that intentional? The second guy has a lot of issues with colour. There's an unnecessary shade of red, and it lacks some contrast. The first and third guy look great, though. Good job!

how does his arm work, that's the first question coming to mind. Reminds me of all those silly 90s comics robot arms.

That's exactly what I was trying to imitate. Those of the like of Colossus (x-men) and Bucky/Winter Soldier (captain america) are who I was trying to imitate.

Pixel Art / Re: best angle ? or how do I approach this (house + roof)

I dont entirely agree with drain but I would say that both of the perspectives he gave especially isometric view are 2 of the most commonly used. For a house they are even more so but you could also do something like LttP:

or this which I think you were going for on the 2 drawings on the right:

It's not only in pixel art, though. There are only really two ways you can look at perspective. What's often called as 'isometric' is actually 'orthographic'. Any drawing without a vanishing-point is considered an orthographic drawing.

I just used the term 'isometric', because it's definitely more commonly used in pixel art and is a term very familiar to most pixel artists.

@Xer0bot Doing orthographic drawings are definitely much simpler than doing a drawing with a vanishing-point. If you're doing a house, starting with a box definitely helps.

Building off a base will definitely make your life easier.

In pixel art, perspective can go two ways. Isometric and Vanishing-Point.

Here is an example of isometric pixel art (credits to Rene Alejandro Hernandez)

Here is a link to an imgur album showcasing Vanishing-Point perspective (credits to Reddit for supplying the link, and credits to the respective artists)

If you know which kind of perspective you want to replicate, tell me and I will do my best to help you.

I would definitely recommend you check the fox thread on the featured tab. It shows a lot of concepts which could also be applied to a cat.

I would definitely recommend starting smaller if you have no background to any kind of art, but if you're already adept in other forms of art (e.g. digital, traditional, painting etc.), you could definitely have an easier time in making bigger pieces.

As for the piece itself, it's actually pretty nice! The level of detail is not really the most important part of pixel art, I would definitely put readability above it. Cramming in too much detail can make a piece very noisy, and it hurts the readability. I would definitely recommend working on your cluster-work and colours. Learn hue-shifting, brightness and saturation.

I often google images (i.e. reference for the things I'm trying to draw) before I even open up Photoshop to start pixelling. Currently, your form is really odd and not human-like (even though, yes, it's a cat).

This was the first image I saw when I googled 'slightly side-view person'.

As a beginner, I would recommend tracing it, but as you go on, try to imitate even with not tracing. This will train your muscle memory in the form and anatomy of the human body.
