Pixel Art / Paper Mario 64-sized sprites - animation pipeline query
« on: May 14, 2020, 09:27:17 am »
I'm working towards making sprites that I'll be able to give a variety of animations that would work in an RPG battle system (idle, performing an attack) and I was wondering what people's workflow is when prepping sprites to be animated?

Do people normally do clean up after getting a general idea what the animations are going to do? I'm struggling to use cut-up segments to an effect that doesn't just look like they're puppeteered...

Both these sprites are WIPs, just to mention. I'm not 100% on the character design of the snail, so he'll have to mostly be redone from the outset.

I couldn't really tell your idle was moving at all. It doesn't need to be overly animated, but maybe just having the shoulders move a little (with their being a small follow-through down the arms).

Eh, I think it's a matter of personal taste, because at least because of the context, the latest edit by Shnurbs looks well enough like a flower (reminds me of Petey Piranha). I think putting them in front like that makes it less clear what the head shape is, and misses the opportunity of putting them in perspective.

I would suggest you make the darkest red on the flower character less harsh, it pops out just a bit too much to come across as the darkest shade.

Cheers for the draw-over, that gives me a great direction to aim for the second sketch over.

I'm not happy with the limp-ness of the legs, there's something wrong with the frame before the loop restarts, so hopefully I can get it to remain dorky without being jarring.

Thank you both for feedback!

Would you say this is dialed back enough?

Major WIP animation, focussing more on the object/character the player is holding (an umbrella). It's still in the sketch stage, so any minor discrepancies between frames will be ironed out later on.

(concept work for reference)

At the moment, there's a lot to improve on the character themselves, but is there a better way I should be animating the umbrella? Is it creating too wide an arc for player character movement in a platformer?

I feel that the dithering you're trying to do on the face, whether it be to add form or not, isn't entirely working.

It looks like you're trying to give it the look of an overlay on a comic strip. Maybe you are, but in my opinion it would look better if you used less of it, and tried shaping the shade to the face more before applying dithering between colours.

I think you're definitely getting somewhere with this! You have a good understanding of where light should be falling on the piece.

At 100% I can't see the blue of the eyes, and instead it looks like her brow line casts a shadow over her sockets. For the white part of her clothes, your two darkest colours (one would be plenty I feel) aren't dark enough. Other areas such as the hair show usage of colour that doesn't create any impact on the overall image (the different hue of pink).

It's a great base to reiterate, however! A strong recommendation I'd have is to lower the colour count everywhere - reuse colours from other areas of your piece. The face and the boots may share a dark colour, for example, but the values around each will make them fit. Reusing colours in a piece will refine and unify your image. :)

Ohh, thanks so much for the edit.

I do eventually wanna make a second loop, something more sedate though to fit the character.

They're a big source of inspiration for me too. :D

Is there anything I can improve for this?
