Pixel Art / Re: [HC] (Honest Criticism) This overhead RPG lady

I really like your sprite!
I made an edit for what it's worth..

I'd say you've got a solid start on the basics there!
For things to work on right now, you want to try to focus on getting that walk cycle right.
There's a good visual guide on how they should work here:

You can add or remove frames from it, but this is a good general reference if you want to get it looking good.

This is a great reference, and is actually the one I used myself when animating my first walk cycle a few days ago.
Here is my animation:
I excluded the "high point" frames, but as you can see the cycle still looks alright without it. Of course it'd look better with animated arms.

OP, if these animations are for a game, I would suggest doing first just the basic animations (idle, walk, jump, shoot). More complex animations aren't necessary and can be added in later. Things like a reload animation can be substituted with a reload sound, for example. It's important when venturing into a new territory (pixel animation), to keep it simple at first and manageable in order to not get discouraged and lose motivation.
This is speaking from experience.
Good luck on your game and your pixel art'ing, OP!  :)

Pixel Art / Re: [CC] Beginner's pixelart, critique appreciated

Hi there, and welcome to pixelation!
I think your pixel art is pretty good for a complete beginner.
I made a quick edit to your first drawing. It was probably a stylistic choice, but I found that the black outlining of the eyes and mouth really flattened the character.
I also felt the face was rather flat (being all one beige colour) when compared to the detailed flames, so I added a bit of shading to the face to give it more volume!

I like your style, but my only critique is that the black outlining on the leg bracers is a little jaring.

Pixel Art / Idle & Walking Animations Help
« on: May 28, 2016, 04:09:16 pm »
Hello all! I just got into pixel art this week and I decided to try my hand at a few simple animations.
But I've been staring at these two animations loop for too long and I need a fresh pair of eyes.
I don't like the timing of the idle animation, but i'm having difficulty fixing it.
thoughts?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Zelda-Style Samus Sprite
« on: May 28, 2016, 03:18:25 pm »
I think the amrs looks too much like tubes or barrels on the body sides. Maybe Give the shoulder pad more definition, or better yet use a more dynamic pose for the arms in the idle state. After all, in the games, Samus is always pointing her weapon arm at something :)

Hey OP I really like your sprite, and I thought this guy's suggestions were good so I made a quick edit.

This is what I meant (end of tutorial, but the whole is interesting) :
http://samkeddy.com/pixel-art-outlines/

In my edit I had added a pixel to separate head and torso, but in that case it didn't need to go inside the sprite, to have a better separation between the two.

That was a great read, thanks for linking it!
And now I understand and see what you meant.

Great edit and tips! I definitely went a little overboard with the noise/detailing.
About the last tip: did you make an edit that showcases what you meant about "going a bit inside with the outline", or were you just speaking generally?
either way, thank you!

Thanks for the critique! Overworked meaning it clashes (draws too much attention) with the simplicity of the other items in the scene? I'll scale back the noise on the logs and floorboards and see how it looks. (:
