Alright heres an update. More saturation on all colors, all colors have been darkened too. I shrunk the left military dude a bit and placed him 'higher' on the ground. I bet I could shrink him down a bit more even.

Ye, I need some shadows. Ill add those.

Re banding, I guess I see what you mean. Ill put some work into eliminating banding.

I know this is asking a lot, but would anyone be willing to do an edit on a piece of my drawing to eliminate my banding? I feel like banding is a big weakness of mine, and while I think I understand banding conceptually, Im not very good at avoiding it.

Pixel Art / Opening shot of plane scene from The Dark Knight Rises
« on: July 31, 2016, 02:39:36 am »
Hey guys,

Im drawing a shot from the movie The Dark Knight Rises. Here is my reference: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Wm7WwFTS-L4/maxresdefault.jpg

And here is my drawing:

Conzeit in the slack channel said I might not have enough contrast. I can see that, but I am not sure how to fix it. Just exaggerating the brightness on my five blues didnt look good. Also I feel like someone of my shading on the plane is too patchy.

What do you think?

Her cheek bone was just a bit jaring, so I made just one quick change on it.
0 I moved the reflection closer to the front of her face, just like the reflection on her forehead.
1 I erased the light shading close to the lower right side of that cheek-color-patch. It gave the impression that her cheek peaks at two different places.
2 I adjusted the outer most color of her cheek to be a bit darker.

Otherwise it looks pretty good. Better than I could do.

Thansk MysteryMeat.

Scanlines! Thats a good idea. Maybe Ill throw an image over the whole screen thats just an alternation between gray and transparent horizontal lines.

The font is just my personal font I use for everything. I agree tho, the Alien look is the only correct one.

btw the game in its current state, is available at : http://www.chadtech.us/elm-prac-9 (its an HTML game).

Its been interesting dealing with blur and distortion. Usually I insist on aliased un-smoothed pixel art (right, how could you not?). I normally have to manually turn off HTMLs anti aliasing, but I left it on for the font since I think it adds to the old-computer feel (you can tell the font is pixelated by design, but its bleeding through like its a CRT screen).

Separately from the font, almost all the image assets are either stretched or rotated, which blurs them. That really wasnt my intention, and Im surprised by how nice this affect has been. Its exactly what I thought would have been unideal.

Cool I think I am done-ish.

Heres what it looks like in game. I darkened the atmosphere on the dark side of the planet from the image above.

Oh sorry guys, I didnt see your replies.

Re the river I was working off this image of the Amazon:  https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/9c/ff/1b/9cff1b6aa6a3bfc3ee74fa7e40cc0bc2.jpg . So maybe its realistic that you could see it from space, but maybe not from the altitude of my drawings perspective. In the game the river isnt visible unfortunately. The planet image gets shrunk and rotated, which washes out the contrast.

Drew my own, also some what guided by Ambivorouss edit.

Then I realized it was more like a Shiba so I fixed its tail to match.

I kinda like the contrast in the fox tail version.

Here ya go. By the way, you can click any image on pixelation to zoom in, you dont need to blow it up (I had to un-blow your image up to start working on it).

Can you see what I mean by 'avoid outlining things'? Nothing in my edit is outlined. The blue body isnt surrounded by a dark blue border, nor the hat a dark brown border. The hat is just a mass of brown, that is brighter or darker in different areas. Similarly I removed the dark brown border around the hats ribbon, and I aligned the ribbons shading with the hats.

EDIT:

Oh an also, I adjusted the color palette on the hat. I made the colors much closer together in terms of brightness.
