Pixel Art / Team Rocket Duo
« on: December 17, 2017, 11:11:34 pm »
This is meant to be a standalone picture of my self and girlfriend as team rocket characters. I'm eventually hoping to cross-stitch this piece and give it to her as a gift, which means I'm committed to this and looking for as much criticism as i can get.

Right now I'm a bit stuck on the colors. I want to keep the color count low (which im aware im failing at with "blue") and I also wanted to give us each a red/blue tint. That being said I'm not too happy with the colors in general, so I think I'd like to most help there.

I'm always noticing weird things that will bug me forever if I don't fix them now- so please let me know of anything that looks even slightly off. Thanks in advance  :)

I poked around a bit, messed with the colors and made it as big as my other sprite's head.

I think it's quite a bit better now, but he looks a bit like a 40-something rather than a 20-something year old:

I'm working on a game for work. I want to make the characters who are based on employees to be recognizable. The biggest indicator for this size I think would be the hair.

It doesn't really look quite like the style he has it. I don't expect to get it perfect, but I'm hoping to get it right.

Right now I'm going with the middle one. The game is 2x zoom. Here is another character which I have posted on here already, a robot girl (child):

Already I can see that my first character's head is too small.

I tried moving the shoulders more and rotating the torso to show the chest/back. The rigidity might actually be because her legs and arms move to the same angle

Here I lowered the angle on the legs a bit

Walking animation update:

It's a little rigid but I'd like to keep it at 4 frames. I don't think the side view needs to look that rigid. Any advice?

Also, here's an in-game screenshot:

Could you elaborate on the single-pixel gap problem? I'll probably start animating the girl first.

I'm not sure about the "hair" in the side and back views. This is a game for my students, and thus both of these characters are supposed to look like 10-12 year olds.

Awesome edits, thanks guys! It's really helpful to see other people's take on the same reference image.

I now have a boy and a girl robot with subtle difference between them:

I was going to post how they look in game when I discovered that I'm a dolt. Apparently my code had been stretching out my old 32x32 filler sprite to a 48x48 canvas :D. I've got to go back and scale these guys up a bit. I'll probably post some edits later tonight Turns out it actually looks good at 32x32, I'd rather improve it at this size than redo it.

This is a new style for me and I'm having trouble translating the details I want into such a small sprite.

This is my reference image. I don't want to directly copy it, but I like this person's design a lot.

I'm pretty lost on the outlines. I've been almost randomly changing colors on her body. This character is for a game and I'm already pushing it with her size. If I could make her even shorter that'd be wonderful.

Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Avatar help?

Your colors and lighting are nice, but you need to devote more time into the silhouette and outlines of your sprites. You have a lot of "jaggies" in your outlines, the curves are discontinuous rather than smooth, and lines fluctuate in thickness.

This page has some information about jaggies, and also a section on cleaning up an outline. I think if you made your outlines more carefully and spent more time rounding out your shapes so they are smooth rather than lumpy, you'll notice a huge improvement in all of your art

My favorite tool for stuff like this are the Hue/Sat/Val sliders in Paint.net
The Magic wand lets you shift+click to select every pixel of a certain color and then you can mess with just that color.

Anyway I put in a couple of minutes and maybe got it a bit better? I can see why you are having trouble, I just can't seem to find that perfect shade
