I find the blue for the outlines very off putting.  You may need to add a color to have a better outline color.

I think your tiles look great.  You just need to put more of your content you made into your mockups to break up the monotony (the tiles are already there, you just need to place them).

One thing to keep in mind is to keep a lot of the transitions from dark to light fairly tight and localized, instead of trying to spread it evenly over the surface.

I rather liked what the warm tones brought to the darker parts of the isle.  It had a deep, intoxicating feel to it, sort of hellish.  I do agree that the lighter colors make it a bit *too* warm though.

So I did an edit of my own.  The lightest colors are cool and nightly, and the in-between a very grey orange hue.  Feel free to disagree.

That is incredibly awesome now.  EGA is one of those palettes that demands pixel placement over color choice and your fixes show that.

Fill the dark tiles of the layer behind the player character with leaf tiles (or tree bark).  It's implied that you should be able to see the detail there.
