Decroded, thanks for the advices.
the palette is limiting, but it gives me image consistency. i won't get it if i make my own palette. and still before making my own palette i probably have to learn how to use existing ones.
related to the different skin colour - as i understand it's not about race-related skin colour, so can you please show an example?

trying to make bigger faces, using your advice. are they better than old ones?

i don't feel i was able to gave them expression (which Dune guys have a lot, mostly Harkonnen one, i think. btw, does char's hands take a big part of its expressiveness in this case?)

odedrt9, thanks for reply. i think you are right, especially related to the black guy's neck's area.
but i don't know other way to make transition betweeen light and shadow more smooth with limited palette.
is the dithering bad here because of low resolution, or because i'm doing it wrong technically?

very interesting idea) i bet this if first time anyone seeing pagoda-saloon. but if your goal is to learn - may be it's better to draw these things separately?)

does the clock make sense on it? it probably more fits to townhall or something. also it seems a bit too light/contrast with your wood.
you are right, the door is too small. may be you can make it more 'saloonish' rather than 'oriental'.
is the gray area at the bottom a shade of the 1st stage's roof, or a small elevation?

ok, i decided to start from scratch
picking up a palette and learning how to use it is my first priority for now.
i was trying to use Dawnbringer's 32, but it is too challenging for my (lack of) skills. the low resolution i'm using also doesn't helps here, because i'm not capable to dither or draw outline when the pixels are too large related to the sprite/tile. still, i really liked the palette itself. wondering if there's 64 / more color version of it?
so i'm using arne's 64 color palette. here are the results so far

i like it myself, but i need skilled peoples opinion here.
there was already a note about body proportions earlier. i can understand why human figures are distorted this way (previous post), but i still want to keep body proportions closer to realistic.

also, i totally failed when trying to draw any environment/land tiles with this palette and resolution.
with db32/lower resolution i get some result i can att least use in game (there's light-shadow issues, but i will think about it later)

but can't get even that with new palette and higher resolution. of course i'm also trying to find and watch other's textures etc., but i'm probably missing something.
