Pixel Art / Pixel Art Music Video

I'm currently in the process of making a music video for college as a project. It's been 9 weeks out of the ten we have to do this, and this is what I have so far. My main issue is with the backgrounds, because they just look a little... bland, a lot of the time, and I'm not sure how to clean them up. I'll also link the original music video as a reference just so anyone that sees this understands where I'm coming from with all the background designs.

may I suggest wordpress for your portfolio? Totally free and looks a little more professional than imgur. Do your portfolio some justice!

I'm trying to turn turn this sprite that I've made to face straight forward so that I can create a downwards running sprite of it, but my problem is that I'm trying and failing to achieve this... Does anyone have any suggestions?
