I think you need the highlight colour for the yellow parts, the newest version looks a little flat now. I would suggest however using a less saturated yellow for the highlight, since highlight colours are usually more towards white. And you should use the highlights to make the shading a bit less symmetrical. In your reference picture for example, the highlight on the head is above his right eye since the light is coming from an angle, so you could do something similar.

Robotroit: Yes those are my thoughts as well, but my ideas for the game include day progression which would of course change the direction and placement of the shadows. Of the two tents, which one do you prefer however? Would it be improved if I kept the light source top down and instead just individually shaded both sides? thankyou for your comment :]

Alright, I see ... in that case, I'd take the second version but change the folds on one side to make it look less mirrored.

I like the new animation btw, it improved a lot!

I think the tent would look a lot better if it wasn't symmetrical. Make the lighting come either from the left or from the right.

Regarding your animation: it looks like you're using the idle frame as part of the walk cycle, that's something you shouldn't do because in reality, it just doesn't happen. You should change the idle frames to passing frames for each leg, where one of them is pretty much straight, and the other is bent, passing the first leg. Take a look at some walkcycle tutorials like http://www.idleworm.com/how/anm/02w/walk1.shtml

This is what the entire robot looks like. Technically at this picture detail you'd have to see his right arm, but I think showing it would only increase visual clutter in that area.

Updated. I actually don't intend to bring out the rest of the robot too much, since I want the focus of the image to be on the head. I think I fixed some of the other issues though and I also adjusted the palette slightly. No major specular highlights since it has an anti-reflective coating on it to reduce the chance for optical detection ;)

I changed the barrel and fixed the brightness a little. It's mostly finished now.

Hey, I finally started doing some pixeling again. I'm mainly posting this very early stage to keep myself motivated to continue working on it, but c&c are welcome as usual. The crappy colours are subject to change of course, but it's kind of late and my colour value judgment has already shut down.

I also made something similar in style (4 colours only though). http://robotriot.hokuten.net/img/cga_train2.gif

You really need to add textures and a light source. A lot of the parts on the train throw shadows or have reflective surfaces, this would really bring your picture to life. Of course, at this size, it's going to be a lot of work, as already mentioned.

I also noticed the wheels are off ... if you look at the photo you posted, you're missing that kind of disc on the wheel that actually keeps the train and the wagons on the track (I don't know the technical term for it). As it is now, it looks as if the wagons were balancing on the track.
