How to draw steam punk machines

Usually for it to be considered "Steampunk" it has to run off of a steam engine.
So the first thing you want to do is understand just how an engine is built up.
And how it works.

Pixel Art / Graffiti Ghosting (to do or not to do)

I expect mixed opinions on this whole thing.
Still pretty rough, I didn't like his pants being blue so I made them brownish, and didn't like it so I made his hoodie green.

Oh, and the squares are supposed to be studs.

I smoothed out the nose, but Im still stuck on how to shade the hat.

Here are my two cents.

I really think that hat is horrid.
The yoshi is pretty cool but the hat...
The perspective is off, he has an imaginary huge head in your version, or at least it looks like this at the angle the hat is on.

His cheek is also a bad gathering of banding.
banding is when 2 colors practically hug eachother.
This is an example of basically over AA, and banding.
Though I'm no guru on banding as I'm sure I actually did plenty of it in the edit I did for you.
You tried to smooth out that cheek line it seems and you over did it a bit much.

I made an edit though my cheek is rough you can see how I tried to break the solid lines.
Also, I noticed you jumped straight to textured nose before doing your volumes.
I'm wondering if you worked from a solid shaded sphere or if you just shoved the texture/shading on at the same time.

I was really liking this hand, the arm hanging back just seems odd, I don't know why.

Anyways all is looking good.  :y:

I disagree with Souly. It's not really consistent with the already established lighting and it is by no means an outline, it's rim lighting.

COUNTEREDIT.

Touché  :ouch:
I just had done a quick edit to maybe try and give him an idea for how to go about it.
Was just a sloppy attempt to break the black outline, an obviously bad attempt at that.
I actually had noticed I didn't even go with the lighting had edited my post...

Lendrick; That's looking awesome.
Just an idea for the legs, I know you may have wanted 1 pixel thin legs, but to be frank they are still sticking out like a sore thumb.  :y: :yell:

I see Atnas did a similar thing by adding an outline on the legs.

Just editing Lendrick's edit.. cause well it's shiny.
Though Atnas' legs are way better AA'd, this is just if perhaps you want to spread the black outline.

I also like black outlines, but yea I think your problem here is you have a black outline on the body, but the legs and the top head part dont?
That's what looks strange.

I'd suggest maybe even trying something along these lines.

Anyways awesome stuff regardless it just needs some consistancy in the sprites.

edit: heh I just realized the light is coming in from the left... not the right. ^.^;

First question;
Why did you start off with a huge head and then decide against using the old shape for the head you had?
Now his head is round, and wayyy too big for his body, arms usually make it to about the persons knees.
Also your starting sketch his eyes are too high on his head.
Your also guy has no neck, you've used too many colors on his face texture and you've done alot of banding (where two or more colors hug each other constantly)

I'd say start over with maybe the first or second head you had, re-draw the body considering the average person is 5-6 heads tall.

So is this a riff off of Gish or what?
Not at all, Gish is entirely physics based.
The character, the objectives everything was physics based.
In Gish you collect coins while moving to the next objective.

And I don't remember getting larger in gish.
Do you? I never got that far into yet I just got the game a few days ago.

I think of this game more like Katamari then Gish to be honest, though the whole blob with a face is what Gish is so that part I can't really make any different.
In Gish you control your properties of Gish with A,S,D
A to stick, S to be slippery, D to make yourself heavy

In my game you're always sticky and slippery, and my blob isn't physics based.
It's just quite the illusion that it sort of seems to be.

But I'd go as far as say yes inspired by Gish for sure.

but curse you for using Musicshake.  Use FL Studio and make original things.   >:(
I can make music for you if you want.  For free, call it a favor.  Not that my music is in high demand at the moment.  Just don't use MusicShake.  !yus!
Umm Srike, I didn't use anything to make any kind of music?
I don't know where you are getting this idea.

I used a song from Youtube's collection.
That's where the song for this video came from if you're wondering.
I accidentally un-installed my fruityloops or maybe I would have tried to make my own music.
