2D & 3D / Quantum Core - Levels and Terrain
« on: January 09, 2009, 09:40:56 am »
Well I don't really wanna post this in the other thread since this is a discussion about the 3D aspect to the game.

You can view the youtube video.

Think about the world actually being flat, Like a boxed in room with 4 walls.
The top of the wall is above ground, everything else in the wall is underground.
SO it's giant open box, when you hit the edge of the world it will do a sort of paper mario rotation, the camera and player will flip around to the other side.
This was an idea I had to make use of the 3D more. :]

I'm using Google's Sketch Up to do the modeling.
The black outlines are a part of the program and wont be in game.

It's blurry because this is not a screen shot of in game this is just what I have made in the editor so it looks like in-game kind of.

This showcases the lanes.
The player moves in the largest lane, anything on that lane has collision.
The two back lines are for background shapes and objects.
2D grass will be placed on the front line and the second line.

Okay, so I have some sad news.
The programmer of the River City Ransom game and I have decided that it's quite a complex game for 2 people, let alone it being the first game we work on together.
Let alone that a combo system in an MMO is hella difficult. @.@
He gave me a test run of a megaman MMO he had made.
It was pretty cool, lacking any real aiming but it was fun it had a jetpack system and weapon switching all coded.

I've always loved Cavestory I'm not gonna lie, so I pitched the idea of doing an MMO Cavestory type game.
I decided to kind of re-make Lectro. :]
Anyways, this time I'm hoping to go further then just that copy cave story look.
Enough talk...

Pixel Art / Destructoid (demo)

Aim with your mouse, WASD to move, and Enter to restart a level if you mess up or the game messes up.

The arm and gun are seperate and rotate based on your mouses position.

The graphics aren't the greatest since they're only silhouettes.
I'm not really sure if I can do anything more detailed with this game like the tiles since they break into 2x2 and get smaller.

I stumbled across this on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3BIaTYNafc

Seeing a 3D River City Ransom made me contact the creator to see if it's still around.
And apparently he hadn't worked on it in ages but would like to finish it.
I've always adored RCR, and I hope to re-make a favorite I'm doing my best to not copy the original pixel for pixel. I've done all the animations from eye balling the sprite sheets provided.

Pixel Art / Nameless game (demo)
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:39:19 am »
This is my first attempt at using game maker.
I haven't gone too crazy with the art on it yet, still just trying to get the engine to work properly.
Todays progress was wall jumping, glitchy movable crates and falling blocks.

Most recent video of the current demo
I'd post the pure pixels but they aren't much to look at.

You can download the demo here
It is still REDICULOUSLY glitchy, seriously don't expect to play this without doing a manual restart of the level...
W,A,S,D to move and jump
Mouse to aim and shoot
ENTER to restart the level if you've done something that could stop you from completing the level

Here are youtube link of the progress.

2D & 3D / UV Mapping in Lightwave
« on: September 30, 2008, 06:51:38 pm »
I've been trying out some 3D the last few days.
I dabbled in it in highschool, I sucked at it back then too.

Anyways, I tried making a jet.
Each piece is on a seperate "layer" (chassis, wings, jets)
I'm still only learning.

Anyways, I've taken the cockpit and I've done what I think is unraveling into a UV map.
Now I'm not sure if I'm supposed to just print screen and then draw over this?
I haven't found a single way to export the UV map as a blank image. D:

I've searched for tutorials but they've only confused me more on the whole thing.

Boredom

I was thinking of Lost Vikings, I made this after doing the RPG chars above.
Don't ask about the tree, I know it's fucked I hate it, so I will change it soon.
I was trying to be all funky but it didn't work at all.

I don't know what's going on with the floors in either of these mockups.
I'm also unsure if white alone will do this justice I may try some color.

These were made for a 3 Hour Game competition.
The two bottom ships are P1-P2 the smaller ships beside them are their options.
Purple ship - Standard ship stays and shoots enemy bullet (top left orb thing)
Red ship - Kamikaze
Orange ship - Swoop in shoot a couple times, swoop out.
Teal ship - Drone ship comes in a swarm.
Pink ship - Medium ship, shoots missiles and lasers
Yellow ship - Medium Boss, shoots missiles lasers and hyper laser
Grey ship - Large Boss, shoots alot.

The programmer said the game should hopefully be completed by today. :]
Here's the movement demo he gave me, A or Z to shoot (don't remember)
