Link to the whole series

Just found this via TheAwesomer.com. A short series that looks like a LetsPlay of a 16-bit sidescrolling action game, with some great pixel art, by Paul Robertson.

Only ever saw one or two episodes, but I like the contrasting color scheme.

I don't think it looks like a boat. Boats typically don't have straight windshields, do they? Their windshields are curved to follow the shape of the bow.

I like the colors and how the wind blows the palm trees. What I think could be improved is the character's silhouette, specifically the roundness on the left side,, from the neck down along his arm towas his hips; it looks almost like a circle. I probably depends on the type of jacket he is wearing, but I think a slimmer, more defined look would be cooler for this scene :)

More contrast, or outlines, would help make the characters stand out more. Waldo's glasses especially are hard to make out on his face.

He actually has a beret on. True, a striped shirt might have been more stereotypical, but the vest and scarf give him a bit more style ;)

I was just kidding, of course.

Still, if I didn't know who he is supposed to be, then I would have said it's an englishman or scot... That button vest and the mustache, you know :)

Where is the baguette? Where is the Gauloises? Where is the beret? Why isn't he wearing a striped mime suit?

I'd say that the two things that are distinctive to ME are 1. the fluid parkour-like movement and gameplay mechanics and 2. the highly stylized, almost monochrome graphic style, with everything being white or light grey, and only the important objects in bright colors like orange, blue or red (especially the latter). So, how can this be replicated on the NES?

I would envision that the character is animated similar to Prince of Persia and Flashback with the ultra-smooth pixel animations, only with the added mechanic of having the option of not stopping after a jump, but rather chaining different moves and jumps together to seamlessly traverse the terrain.

As for the graphic style, the NES palette is limited, but in this case, this is actually a good thing because it helps bracket the needed colors; three or four shades of white/grey for backgrounds terrain, and two shades of red, orange and blue for the important objects. The key is dithering and shading here, to replicate the occlusion culling that makes the monochrome environment of the original ME pop out.

You feature those concepts in your sreenshots, but I think ther eis room for improvement. The environment could be more muted as outlined above, maybe with even less or more subtle details. The character needs the red/black half gloves on her hands, and for the sprite itself, well, personally I would use Prince of Persia as a reference for realistic human jumping and running poses.

Jason's mask had an iconic red chevron on the forehead in most instances of the series, maybe if you add that it'll look less egglike and more like his mask :)
