Pixel Art / Re: Dreaming portal

It's hard to read that the streams are supposed to be tentacles. I did a quick edit here - I added additional definition to the tentacles to clarify where they begin and end, added some little suction cups on them, and increased the lighting / depth. Additionally, I added more contrast to the figure and added a couple extra colors to make it clear how the light reflects onto them.

Not sure what size you're working with, but this is best viewed at around 3-4x. If you intend to view this at 1x, then you'll want to change up the composition a bit.

I feel like you're missing out on a lot of opportunity in general to make this scene more dynamic. Try adding even more shadows, more exaggerated lighting, and perhaps try mixing and dithering colours to add more variety. Here is a quick edit where I emphasized shadows and the mage woman's light.

I would recommend using a reference image. Think about how light will create shadows and how form and shadow relate. Study some anatomy and really dig into how people are pit together and try to show that less with an outline and more with shading.

I'm in the same boat as eishiya. It's just not clear to me what the underlying question is. What sort of indoor tile do you want? What feel are you going for? Creating an attempt to give us an idea would be helpful. Additionally, the tile shown appears to be from a side-view platformer whereas the room outline is top down.

@astraldata No problem, I probably came off a little overly adversarial there myself. I felt like we were starting to get into caricature territory with the most recent edits, so I maybe responded more strongly than I otherwise would have.

@winged doom The main character portrait has some wonderful art! It's very high quality. That said, have you thought about making her a little... older? I'm a bit weirded out by the whole "sexy child" look currently going on there. Other than the dress, she looks like she's around 10 years old. I don't say this to be mean or anything, and I can tell you're going for a sort of cute/chibi style, but it's good to be aware that she definitely comes off as pretty young to be turned into a "sexy" character... A little older or a little less sexy might be a good move.

Pixel Art / Re: Help me fix my fence

Try focusing more on the wood grain. In the posts, the grain is going to be vertical. I based this edit on the idea that the posts were small logs. On the bars of the fence, the grain will be more horizontal. Wood has a pattern to it, not just a texture - follow the lines of the grain.

Also consider your light source. The fence is going to have more light on the top bars and less near the bottom. The heavy top outline makes it feel off.

I'm going to strongly disagree with the advice given here to merely emphasize breasts and waist as indicators of femininity for this lady. That's a very limiting view. For this particular piece, this lady is a badass fighter from what I can see - she's hardly going to have a teensy waist, and large breasts are going to be bound to keep 'em from bouncing around. A better way to help indicate she's a woman would be to narrow her shoulders and perhaps give her a few feminine accents, such as jewelry. Here is a quick edit in which I made her shoulders more sloped and narrow, added some hair jewels, and actually de-emphasized her chest (for the sake of practicality).

I would recommend studying the Mario walk animation. It's three frames:

- Left leg front
- Legs middle
- Right leg front
- Legs middle
- Left leg front
- Lather, rinse, repeat

Though you're limited to three frames, I assume you should be able to have one of those frames repeat, such that your walk cycle is frame 1, frame 2, frame 3, frame 2, frame 1, frame 2..... you get the idea.

Pixel Art / Re: Elf girl - help, critique
« on: May 30, 2018, 01:23:59 am »
A few edits:

- increased contrast and exaggerated lighting
- blocked in the hair a bit more and removed outline
- shortened body height to create a slightly more "chibi" effect and improve arm-to-body length ratio

I increased contrast and added more crystalline features to the tile.
