Pixel Art / Re: Help with beach water and waves tiles...
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:08:51 pm »
Ok, so I made my tiles without thinking further and your observations are useful. I'm going to split the gif of the pokemon tile - looks more what I'm trying to achieve.

So pokemon ruby has 6 frames to waves and the sea.

______-|.__  - frame[0] - Sea is at mid height. The waves get a little height at a side.
___-|--.___  - frame[1] - Sea is a little up it's mid height. The waves get higher and got to middle. Beach border loses one pixel for the sea.
__\---..___  - frame[2] - Waves collapses, and crashes on themselves and also at the beach.
_-...._____  - frame[3] - Waves have little height, and inertia keep it moving up at the beach.
...________  - frame[4] - Water escapes back to the sea, beach border shows up, but it's wet. Waves are also flat, but flowing with inertia.
________...  - frame[5] - Waves flat and going, the waves have also retract and the beach shows up more. It's also dry/not so much wet..

I made a little ascii art to show my perception because it's seems my English knowledge is not  able to describe waves... I will sketch and comeback when I have results - it might take a while...

Dude, this is a great game! it's simple, but awesome, and having both the idea and pulling out in so little time. You should write some advice on game making.

Hello,

My name is Erico, I did hobby games illustration when I was very young, and also made some games when I was very young on Klik & Play, and later between 14 and 17 (IIRC) using RPG Maker and RM2k, and participated in some small game making forums at the time, mainly contributing with pixel art - from game UIs to charas, tiles and such. I finished highschool, got my engineer diploma and started to work on completely unrelated field. Some years ago, I participated with some friends in a Global Game Jam, some of them which I had made games together on RM2k before, but now we did a 48h 2d Unity game. That experience was something that I could not forget, and recently my gf motivated me to do a game again, in my free time,  and finish it. So that's what I'm doing, and when deciding the art form, I couldn't think of anything other than pixel art - I did low poly in wings3d for a small game years ago, but pixel brings my childhood back. I'm 27yo. I, found this forum linked in a site I found through Google - I can't remember the website. Hello!

Pixel Art / Help with beach water and waves tiles...

Hello!

I'm doing these tiles to use in a beach in my game. I think I need help getting this right... What do you guys think of it, does it seems ok? I'm having trouble making the wave at the border of the sand feel right...

Inspiration is from this image - it's from where I took the colors, mainly got the photo and played around...

Unpaid Work / In development pixel game RPG environment
« on: January 28, 2015, 04:00:55 am »
Hello,

I'm a 27 year old person who is working on free time to get a top down RPG similar to SNES RPG games up and running. The game is fully written in javascript and it's being tested to run on pretty much everything. This game is made on a tool I made that's similar to rpg maker, but aims to be simpler and more hackable.

I want to release this game paid for some amount of time and them release full source for everything.

The game is very small so I can finish it this year. Right now I'm focusing more on getting gameplay right and then moving to getting story right. Mainly there is this island with a small town and some people are missing in it, so you have to find each and return them to town or adding them to your party. When they are in town some buildings become active, so you have to balance adding to party or getting new stuff on town - which I hope will give a little replay value without adding too much on content.

My art needs are for the environment - I'm working with 32x32 tiles in a 416x416 screen on mobile and 416x286 screen on pc.

I need things to be able to build a small medieval town, a forest, a mountain and a desert/beach. I already have some pixel art going on.

Some conceptual sketches are here: http://doomiest.deviantart.com/gallery/52950211/Devious-Folder

(I have some less presentable sketches if you want too)

I also can pay, but would like to discuss the amount - mainly because up until now I've paid for more 'mechanical' artwork, where I designed pretty much everything and needed someone to translate to pixel, but now I need a more creative artwork.

Message me if there is interest.

Also I can answer some questions here too.
