Pixel Art / Re: Pterodactyl Mobile Suit design

First off you dont need to up scale your pixelart because this forum has a zoom function when you click on it.
Your 2d dessing looks really static like if you push it it will fall over. But i really like the amount of detaile you put in it. Some basic shadows would improve it a lot. The spaceship also needs some shadows.

Your 3d dessing looks a lot better. I absolutely love the designs of the arms, they look amazing. For the front view you have to shade the 6-pack. The head does not look scary at all it looks really simple in contrast whith the rest of the body. I am realy looking forward to a update with legs. Don't try to use to many colors when shading.
Again the spaceship looks really simple in contrast with the body and it has a lot of collors for a litte bit of shading, i sugest you take a look at some spacships i have build.

I know i not the best pixel artest but if you need some help with spaceships for your game i would be glad to help you, just send my a pm.

Unpaid Work / Looking for beginner pixel artist
« on: January 31, 2015, 11:42:48 am »
Hello,
I am a hobbyist programmer and want to make games to gain experience, that is why I am looking for a beginner pixel artist so that we both gain experience.
I am serious when it comes to making games I have bought game maker professional and I am experimenting with multiplayer.

It is currently unpaid but when we both get better we can do a revenue share on the following projects.

Here are some projects I have worked on in the past:
Humanity last hope
http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/27147
this is the first game I made but I stopped because I needed better artwork and could not make it or find it on the internet

First time flying
http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/27861
This game was made in a few hours and was inspired by flappy bird

If you are intressed in working with my send my a PM.

You don't really need the black outlines at that small resolution if you remove it you have more room to make it look better and give it his goggles. I recommended using aleast 2 diffrent colors for the belly. The bird also seems to be missing a beak.

Make some obstacles like rock where your character has to jump over or that fall from the ceiling.
Also more vines in my opinion. Maybe some bats with a simple animation and a basic ai could make your game better, you could do the same for rats. For the rest you did not tell what type of game it would be but you could create some enemies because almost every game has some sort of enemy

Pixel Art / Re: Industrial tileset: Not sure where to start
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:09:38 pm »
The level looks pretty good for only having 4 tiles. Try to make some variations of the tiles that you have untile now like one with a crack in it or one that is missing a bar. That way you have some variation in you level otherwis the level will look boring after some time. Also a background would help dealing with this issue.

Thanks Phlakes, for the amazing comment. I am really impressed by what you have made. I am going to use you tips a lot, i try to practice a little bit every day. I like how you you described your proces of making a spaceship but I personally like to make a basic version on paper first and then recreate it as pixel art, that way i put a lot of effert in the silout and the place of the panels. But because of that i have a hard time adding details, or what you did in step 6. But like you said I have to go analyses a ton of references and pay some more attention to the derails or what it makes look so good.

This may not be the case but if you're using indie games from recent years to draw inspiration then you might want to reconsider and find some better sources.

It is true I played some FTL (indie game from 2012) and looked at the designs to get inspiration, but I did not complete coppyd it because this is the ship in FTL

I say this because there are plenty of "retro" games out there pixel art by untrained artists or in some cases where style is sacrificed for practical gameplay reasons.

I am a untraned artist (for now, i will get better) and i made the spaceship not to complex so that it is easer to make the game because i am only a Intermediate programmer and not a expert.

Either way I'd say get hold of mame32 and run some of the classics like the Dodonpachi series and many others.
There is much to learn from this golden age of shmups (just before 3D became the standard) with amazing artwork by really talented artists, especially the Japanese dudes have some crazy style choices.

I am only 16 so i didn't knew mame32 or dodonpachi so after googling it, I understandd why.

Pixel Art / [c+c] Spaceship
« on: January 02, 2015, 09:52:33 am »
Hello,
I am pretty new to pixel art and made some spaceships. I would like to get some comments and critiques on it. I also added my previous spaceship, so that you can see if I made any progression.

I know they have the same style, that is because I want to use them in games I will make.
When you give critiques please consider that this are only my second and third pixel art.
