Pixel Art / Re: Need some feedback on my game art!
« on: February 17, 2017, 10:41:03 am »
Looks nice so far!
The background could be made less saturated and less contrasting with the foreground. As like it is now, the character kind of disappears in all that background detail. It is not immediately clear what is interactable and what is background.

Very nice improvements already!
It lacks some contrast though at places, here's a rough paint over adding a bit more contrast

Also it's all very, very messy, but that's just the style I guess. But I suggest trying to clean it up, think more about where you place your pixels, use more contrasting colours overall. And clean up some of the noise etc.

That's some great improvement overall!
One thing I could still suggest is, that the clumps of leaves you have there are shaded very individually, like each clump of leaves has a dark outline around them in the way of the shading(idk how to explain it, im not good with words :P), but that makes it look kind of flat imo, like it's put together from a bunch of round leaf clusters. You could try to blend them together a bit, making one bigger shape and a few smaller shapes instead of the tree consisting of a bunch of tiny leaf clusters shapes.

Here's an animated gif to try to illustrate my point.

It looks pretty good so far! But feels like it's lacking depth. Everything is so uniformly lit. You should try to think about it in 3d more, like imagine a point where the lighting is coming from and think about where shadows would be and so on.

Here's a rough and dirty recolour to how you could fix the shading a bit, and I also changed the colours a little, maybe it will give you some ideas!

Devlogs & Projects / The Dark Within - Dimension switching platformer
« on: November 10, 2016, 12:25:30 pm »

Hey guys! My newest game The Dark Within, just landed on greenlight! I figured since it's pixelart, i'd post it here too, maybe someone would like it.
Anyway, i'd greatly appreciate if you checked out the Greenlight page. :)

The game is a fairly short story-focused 2d action/puzzle platformer.

Story:

You're a man, awaken in a strange place with a terrible stomach wound. You have no clue why and how you got there, and why your stomach is bleeding.
All alone, weak and fragile - you will have to find help, and solve the mystery behind it all.

Game is looking insteresting!
I think you should try to break off the squareness of it all. Maybe just add some slopes if you plan on doing them, otherwise just smoother transitions for the corner tiles. Ceiling tiles are especially something where you can go mad, because precise collision there is not important.
Other than that, the sky seems a bit too dark and saturated, and the gradient is pretty weird, I feel a solid colour would work better, or just using a real gradient then, or trying to break the straight lines, by shaping them into abstract clouds or something. The clouds themselves also seem too saturated, and pop a little too much. Your eyes kind of want to focus on them when they should be focusing on the characters instead.

Heres a quick edit, to illustrate some of my thoughts

You should upload the pictures in .png format, otherwise they lose quality, and its impossible to make edits.

I love the style you got going on here though!
especially here -

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys! I really loved that lantern idea. While I think the grass would still be a different colour if it was lantern light, I think it works quite nicely even with the green grass(which I want to keep).
I also dont want to put any enemies behind the players, but I made some more stuff in the background. But want to keep it very simple too, as to not take away too much from what's happening in the front. dont want to add much more detail too.
I wonder if the barn in the background should be even more towards the background colour
In any case, I am actually pretty happy how it is now. Unless there's something major I should fix or do

That's a cool idea. :)

This is where Im at now. I think the main idea I wanted to convey is in. Got any tips what else I could improve? I tried giving one of the guys in the middle a torch and create a scene as if it's lit by that torch, but couldnt really pull it off, so that's out of the question. Also removed the 'stars' from the sky, to make it not look like night so much, that way the lighting makes more sense, imo.
I think something's wrong with the middle guys legs, but It's hard to put my finger on it atm.
