Devlogs & Projects / Lost Fortress - of Dwarves and alien slugs
« on: March 25, 2017, 01:27:46 pm »
Hi!

[EDIT] For the scroll-lazy, every most recent images are on the first post.

[/EDIT]

Some of you might remember my first topic here, and this one won't be very different: underground caves, great halls and dwarves... minus the dinosaurs.

I'll post a lot of stuff here, characters animations, tiles, backgrounds, etc. All in the goal to get valuable criticism (which doesn't imply positive ones, harsh and constructive is even more valuable), so don't hesitate!

Now some textures! Basic rock blocks, small and large ones:

Designed to be used as tiles. I heavily used Metal Slug as a source for inspiration. Why not aiming for the stars?

The two full sets:

An assembly test with the tow basic rock sets, done while finalising them. I have anti-aliased some rock since.  The hanging blocks are a bit out of place, they are from a previous rock texture attempt.

That's all for now, again, every criticism and advice is highly welcome!

Pixel Art / [C+C] Raptor Ball - LD36
« on: September 02, 2016, 10:01:53 pm »
As I did during the last LD, I'll post here the whole sprite I made for my game during the Ludum Dare 36, plus all the stuff I will add to the post jam version of the game.

Screenshot!

Last time the central piece was the running bear, this time it's quite a different animal.

Idle raptor
Stunned raptor
Dead raptor
raptor egg!
Ground level T-rex skeletton

A mockup of the game sprites plus an underground T-rex skeleton, not yet included to the game.

For now the jam version can be found HERE! As with WILD RUN, I intend to release a complete, post jam version in the few days/ weeks. I'll post a link and any new artworks here as I made them.

Any criticism and comment welcome!

Pixel Art / [C+C] Planets, space and co.
« on: August 19, 2016, 09:26:40 pm »
Hi there!

I'm doing some researches and tests for a potential project of space adventure game, and I thought sharing it might bring useful feedbacks. I'm trying some changes in my usual style by the use of outlines. I'm generally not a huge fan, but I must admit that it's a real nice tool for readability. And that's a priority for a fast paced game. Enough words, pictures time!

My first test for a mars-like planet. It's a mockup.

My second test, this time with an earth like planet. I tried with and without outlines. My feeling is that outlines spoils it a bit, it looks more natural without them. But for the sake of consistency with the characters, it might be a good thing. Speaking of which:

The base character design. Boba Fett is a bonus. Also on top, icons for health, armour and shields. I made it with a separated gun from the model, it makes it easy to point it in the appropriate direction.

The run cycle.

Let's end this round with a few .gif of the current prototype in action:

Weaponless character got arms.

Look how cute he is with his little shotgun.

Big gun to test my code. It's so ridiculous I might actually add some guns that oversized in the actual game.

Next step will be making some textures to try to get a direction for interiors. Until then, I'd like to get any criticism, just tell me what you think, every advice and criticism is welcome.

Thanks!

Pixel Art / [C+C] Wild Run - LD35
« on: April 18, 2016, 12:57:21 pm »
Hi there!

So I made my second ludum dare, and as usual, pixel art! So let's see what I made this time:

Main screen, level selection.

Screenshot from the first level.

Animal statue.

The three protagonists! Actually, you morph from one to the other, so there's only really one with different forms.

One of the tutorial statues, appearance vary if a game-pad is plugged or not.

The texture sheet for my levels. Not the best, but I spend so much time on the animal, it's only 48 hours.

It was a great experience, can't wait for the next Ludum Dare! The game is playable HERE if you are interested. It's an auto runner with morphing from an animal to the other.

Any comment an critics welcome, keep in mind it was all made in a rush, I couldn't polish averything as well as I'd like because of the time constrains. Had to make a game too! :p

Pixel Art / [C+C] Bullet Void - a SHMUP
« on: April 28, 2015, 05:52:21 pm »
Hi!

I'm currently working on a small SHMUP and I've decided to expose myself to some critics... It's a cross post with my Tig source Devlog, but I will post pixel art and leave gameplay aside here :)

So I'm not really proud of those spaceships. Any help is welcome.

The red paint of the ships isn't the one I use in the game, I made a really much more simplistic one, geometric.
Now a screenshot:

And now, place to some in game .gif!

What do you think? I suspect that the small ships and even the big ones are to close in shapes, colours, not easy enough to tell wich one is wich without looking directly at it. Not easy while fighting. Too flat maybe?

Pixel Art / [C+C] Top down RPG: sprites and stuff
« on: April 10, 2015, 04:44:46 pm »
Hi!

So, I'm starting to think of a new project and tried a few things. Currently looking for a strong direction in style. For those how remember my other project (a platformer, which collapsed on itself, due to my lack of experience with game maker, coding, and making game in general) it's quite close. Few colours, small sprites. I prefer small additions here and there over complex and heavy textures. Which leads me to question those trees, maybe to complex in shape. Anyway, I post it to get feedback, ideally constructive one ;) Edits welcome.

It's mostly researches. No, Link won't be in my game. Neither will be Gordon Freeman. It was a test to see if I can make recognizable stuff at such a small scale. also, lots of beard styles :p

A runcycle, I made it to see how long it will take, to make realistic time estimations. FYI, it took me 20min/frame, it's 8 frames long. So 2h40. What's your average speed?

That's all for now! :)

Pixel Art / Lost Fortress gallery - Project status: DEAD.
« on: July 20, 2014, 08:05:09 pm »
Hello everyone !

First of all, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm 28, French and an hobbyist artist. I've stalked the forum for quite a while, and i feel like participating could be a good thing. I'm currently working on a game project, using game maker. It's a platformer / RPG / roguelike / dungeon crawler, the line is still very blurry between those elements, I'm working on the engine for now. I started this project by making some pixel dwarves, and I felt the urge to see them running around, that's how i started. The animations of the dwarf is the very first piece of pixel art I made, he's currently very bland, carrying no item and is dressed poorly. I made him as a place holder and a base for the upcoming classes I plan to make, so refining it could be a good idea before making a sprite that will be in the game "for real".

As you can see, the images are quite small, giving a retro feeling I was looking for. It's also faster to make stuff, witch is one of my top priority : if I want something to be finished, I can't spend 10 hours on an idle animation, or 3 hours on a stone texture. I have a full time job and do it as a personal project. I want a lot of enemies, a lot of textures and furnitures, a lot of unique stuff. Pixel art was THE way to go.

This topic will be edited with new elements as I make them. Comments, criticism, advices are welcome.

A few concepts arts.

Yes, I like beards, beer and bears. And dinosaurs.

Dwarf animations :

I might make the dwarf one or two pixels taller (and larger), because right now he's just a little bit taller than the blocks of my levels, which makes it no-so obvious that he can't go inside 1 bloc high tunnels. Where goblins can go, because they're really small. It would make the dwarf a bit bigger, larger.
Done.

Goblin's animations :

He's quite nervous.

As you can see I've tried to work wit very limited palette, I want the result to be clean, smooth, quite minimalistic. I spend a lot of time right now on codding, so i won't have a lot of new stuff to show in a near future, but I'll post a few screenshots when i will have enough textures to show something.

Thanks for reading !

Bonus : Very early screenshot.
